Iron Pre Essentials Kits For The DIYA Store - Register Your Interest

Attached is the schematic for the circuit within the Schurter DD12.9111.111 Power Entry Module. Is this filter suitable or desirable for audio equipment? I was about to buy one but figured it would be good to know what's in the "guts" before ordering. Data sheet attached as well.

Yes

or desirable for audio equipment?"

Depends on your mains quality and the desire to to filter it along with the PSRR of the circuit and any other filtering present. Overall, I'd say unequivocally ... it depends. 🙂 I've never known them to cause ill effects, but some folks may know otherwise. Also, for peace of mind... this (or a similar) unit is included with the WHAMMY kits.

Note, this particular part number is rated for 10A. One could easily pick a less robust unit from that series of parts for this project. Me, I like to have them all rated for big honkin' power since I swap things between projects a lot. Note the dimensions and how they might impact your chassis layout. In addition, for our friends that require both their live and neutral fused, please be sure to also check the spec sheets and choose the appropriate unit.

Hope that helps.

Hope everyone is enjoying the project!

Edited - Why would spell / grammar check think someone would want a piece of mind vs. peace of mind. Maybe the AI thought I was giving someone a piece of my mind.... Sorry, none to spare. 🙂

IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ

Jason and the DIYAudio Store team will be getting in touch with those that expressed their interest in the order they were received. It will include instructions. The process will be similar to the latest VFET kits.

Each person will have a limited time to respond to the inquiry and order their kits if they choose. This will allow a speedy process and be fair to everyone 'down the list'. Please check Spam filters etc. just in case.

FAQs -
  • When? Soon. Earliest responders should hear something within a week. I'll post when the first set of notifications go out.
  • How much? $130 for SE and $150 for balanced + shipping + taxes etc. Final prices are set by the store, but I believe that's correct. If not, it won't be too far off.
  • How many can I order? As many as you originally expressed interest in. You may not order extra at this time. It would not be fair to others. Original quantities were based on the survey.
  • If I expressed interest in both kits at different times, what will be the order I'll be contacted? Based on your first expression of interest.
  • How do I know where I am on the list? You don't. Sorry. No way to know if you were high up on the list or if you were just thiiiiiiiiis close to being offered a first production kit.
  • What if I want to wait for the chassis? You can wait for the chassis. The team is working hard to get them to the store. At least one FPAB is using a prototype. 🙂 So, you can order them from Gianluca now. I don't blame you, they're gorgeous. 🙂
  • When will the 'second round' be available. I cannot promise timing for when more kits will be available for regular purchase in the store. As you've seen, parts supplies are limited. If you absolutely know you want to build it this year. Grab it now if you're offered the opportunity.
  • Will there eventually be a different variety of kits with more parts and/or a combination of the kit with the chassis? Dunno / maybe. I would not worry too much about that now.
  • When will the build guide be finished? Not sure, but soon. It will be worth the wait for those that would like a bit of extra help. Personally, I classify this as an intermediate build given the lack of a full kit and the customization allowed/encouraged. However, if you're a careful assembler, it should not be too challenging. Review the threads, ask some questions, and see how you feel about the build now. If you're not comfortable, wait a bit. Patience will be rewarded. I would not choose this as a first build.
I hope everyone loves this project as much as I have. I lost count of how many I've built, and I'm still not done tinkering with my 'in-use' SE and Balanced versions.

Yay!

^ One addition to above.

If you've expressed interest, and you've let us know you are no longer interested, you may still receive an e-mail. Please respond as quickly as practical. Some of you have let us know in the thread or via PM, and the list has been culled a bit. However, it likely is not perfect. The more quickly you respond, the faster another person down the list may receive their kit.

There's no need for notifying us in the thread or via PM. Hopefully the e-mail and response will not be an inconvenience.

Thanks in advance!

@Reima - That is awesome!

To everyone - Sorry for so many additions.

1. Costing - $125 for SE. $150 for balanced.
2. Things are progressing nicely. Please be sure that you have contact@diyaudio.com whitelisted for your e-mail accounts and/or check your spam folders regularly.

You'll receive an e-mail very similar to below.

If after a week or so, you have not received a similar email, and you're just absolutely certain that you were high enough on the list to be within the first batch of people contacted, PM me, and I'll check. Otherwise, please trust the system. I'll post a link if that becomes available.

For those looking to drill their own holes, I got a Slimline 2U in 350 depth.

This, from amazon is a single U height, 12-holer punch-out for your D-series connectors.
It is exactly the width of the Slimline 2U baseplate and a minor bit wider than the included back-plate.

For 15 bucks I save poorly drilling 36 holes. As Eddie Murphy once said, "that is a bargain for me!"

Another path I'm pursuing is snagging old equipment off of eBay.

Crestron stuff is being pulled out of corporate offices. Their 12 and 16 (!) channel amps are great sounding in their own right (ATI, can be bridged for 200+ watts/ch, fire up that 16 channel home theater!), but for maybe $350 delivered, you get 80 pounds worth of chassis, heatsinks and tons of output and input connectors and some hum-dinger toroids. Trouble is, it hurts to break something that works apart for pieces.

I picked up one of these software controlled signal re-distributio$65 delivered. Case, connectors, scavenge-able capacitors, surface ,mount caps, resistors, opamps, etc. No power supply in this, though.

Finished putting all together in a PESANTE 2U enclosure which I used for a different project before. Made a simple front panel using the tools I had at home.

DC offset set to 0v, checked and re-adjusted the rail voltages to +/-15v. Connected to source and the output to ACA Mini. Plays well and sounds nice.

Noticed a faint sound when the selector switch was on mute position and volume close to full output. Source was connected to input 1. Will do more listening this weekend.

Need to make a longer cable for the input select switch before putting the top cover.

Thanks again for the nice project!
