Interesting YT channel 🙂 Congratulations
Any video projects to make your DIY gear audio demonstrations, compare sound of the one amp with the other(s) etc. ?

Thanks. First I wanted to convert photos of my old projects into videos. There is still a couple of projects to do. Maybe I will do some real videos in future, or at least pictures will be better quality. I don't have plans to do any audio demonstrations at the moment, but who knows...

Just finished putting together my second and probably final iteration/clone of a B1 with Korg Triode. As I’m new to the hobby, the first one was a chance for me to learn how to match JFETs and this second one was a chance to play with poly caps, wirewound resistors and to “make” a slightly custom PCB. In this final version I’m using the JFETs matched by Mr. Pass and provided with the DIY Audio Store B1K kit (which took a long long time to arrive, that’s why back in December I made a version using my own matched transistors). I kinda squeezed in a loosely inspired (read=probably wrong adaptation) of Mark Johnson’s inline DC filter. This forum is a gem, the amount of knowledge and ideas available at a fingertip is huge, but so bloody dangerous to my wallet (I’m already thinking of what to build next)
Now, the preamp sounds excellent in my budget-friendly system (Elac, SMSL, Pro-Ject) and it’s not terribly microphonic. It’s fairly silent and it really shines in soundstage when set between 9.2V-9.7V. The “colour” it adds to the music is there but subtle and I don’t see myself getting tired of it anytime soon. As an added bonus, it’s not yet set my apartment on fire. But I’m also sure I made a lot of mistakes and unorthodox/messy/uninformed choices (in that case, don‘t go gentle and please absolutely tell me off! 😊)

Ahó, ammazza seipersei, il tuo Nutube é na figata!
Did you design that pcb by yourself? Congrats for your awesome creation!

Gaetano
Grazie Gaetano and thank you all!
I’m not sure I ”designed” it, but yes I used EasyEDA to pretty much clone the original pcb that I bought from the store. But I also wanted to try to make some space for the poly caps (which also meant removing the unused holes for the Toshiba JFETs), simplify the wiring for the NuTube and move it slightly forward, simplify the input and output wiring as much as possible by running traces on the pcb instead of using wires and finally I was curious to try Mark Johnson’s inline DC filter (although I used different and probably worse components compared to his original BOM).
I am glad you are new to the hobby, as I am not - and it hence explains quite a few differences.

Your builds are indeed very different from mine. In fact yours are splendid... and mine look miserable!!!

Congrats, very nice work!

Claude
Claude, thanks not just for your kind words but also for your posts on the original B1K thread, they were a huge source of info and really tickled my curiosity to try and play with poly caps (and I couldn’t be happier with the results)

@seipersei

Lol, il mio é molto più tarocco! It seems much more homemade than yours!

I see a lot of interesting things though, and I'm sure it sounds fantastic. Are those transformers on the output to reverse the phase?

Also, I've been leisurely scrolling through this thread and some stuff is jaw-dropping inspiring 😵 It convinced me that my next build must be an amp by Nelson Pass

Hello out there,

I fired up my first Monoblock with IXYS-Mosfets this evening. No fire till now! :firefite:
I have biased up to 1.7 A. Mosfets at around 40°C after 30 minutes. So, let's go higher...
I think this is not enough bias for FAB-membership?
Only large DC-offset at speakerout. Have to check the next few days.
Prestage is cascoded BA-3.
Good night!
Dirk 😴
