I think it's save to say they're close enough.

I've enjoyed the afternoon of music, however this was with an older FIR filter, so it would most probably be overcompensating at the top end.
Still it made me forget about all of it and just get me into the music. I'll have to redo everything, because all of it has changed. The room, the speaker positions etc. Overal I'm quite optimistic that this is going to work out quite well.

Both Pink Floyd and Infected Mushroom showed me how awesome it is to be abducted by the music. I even played some old Dinah Washington track (50's recording), purely to enjoy the atmosphere of the music.

Another day, another long haul of playing music and a movie...

One could say I'm playing the XXXX out of it to instill some faith again. The 3 broken drivers have been bugging me, not getting a satisfying answer on why they broke. However, the transport back into the room plus their restart has been flawless and not for just minutes. It has been rocking and rocking hard and it hasn't missed a beat. Both my son and my girl each got their own turn to pick out the music. Heck, my son kept playing tunes for quite a while, during which he had a grin from ear to ear.
In tune with the T-shirt he wore he was playing the oldies, Deep Purple and Pink Floyd. 15 Years old but I'd say he's got good taste ;).

Slowly but surely I start believing that things are OK again. We have a few hot days passing by, after that I'll probably start measuring and adjusting again. Slowly but surely working on the new reference so we can start some small experiments again. I still have enough ideas I want to try up my sleeve. :wrench:

Not having the time or conditions inside for measurements, I decided to take a preview on my next experiment. A while ago I mentioned using fake floor reflections to fill the ~1.8 KHz cross-talk dips.

Easy enough to test by convolving the FIR filter with a signal including that reflection. I tested it on phantom sounds only as well as on mid and side channels.

First thing to notice: it does something, clear intelligible voices. Imaging becomes a bit weird though. more center panned sounds seem to cluster. Meaning the bass drum or bass guitar seems to be locked to the same place as the singer's voice. Very open sound for the rest of the surroundings, but not really that focused. Big open space but harder to pin point origins.

(center) Voices sound wonderful though, making me wonder if this is a good HT alternative. That's where it could shine, having that dedicated center.

I will no doubt revisit this test, once everything has been properly dialed in.

Still haven't taken the time to redo all processing. But... it sounds more than decent and we're watching old movies again because it's fun!
I decided to give "The Mandalorian" a try, mainly because it came recommended by Dr. Earl Geddes, he said it's soundtrack/production was top notch. I must say, I can see/hear the attraction! :)

I'll surely revisit this series after redoing all processing. I watched it with my son and he quite liked it. He's never seen any Star Wars movie yet. I think I must have seen two and a half maybe, it never really peaked my interest (nor did Star Trek). Who knows, we might have to watch all of them together now :).

Hi wesayso,

Do you have any of the streaming services? If so, can I request a track review via your towers please: Track is Spaceship Landing by Kyuss and can be found on their final album …And the Circus Leaves Town

I’d be interested to hear your opinion on how they perform with a genre not typically associated with ‘Hi-Fi’… It’s not actually 34 minutes long - just a short 11

Many thanks!

It's this one, right? Kyuss - Spaceship Landing (full version) - YouTube

Just listening to it with headphones it reminds me of Graveyard as in that I didn't detect much above about 6 kHz. :)

I'll see if I can get a listen to a proper version sometime soon. I don't actually have streaming services, exept for a service within the new JRiver but do have a lot of friends with big (huge) libraries from whom I can borrow.

I also listen to quite a few songs that stray from the usual 'Hi-Fi' libraries. Songs like Awake from Devin Townsend actually made it as one of my test songs. That 'test song' group is a wide variety of songs that 'should' sound good to me, for me to accept my current processing.

Just for fun, please don't take these seriously, I'll post two snippets I send to a friend over Whatsapp last week. Remember, I did not redo my processing yet.
Pretty big chance I clipped the phone mic too, so be careful in playback.
But it will give some idea of the listening spot, well... almost...

Please use right click and choose 'save link as', play at your own risk :redhot:

P.S. Here's the analysis of that Graveyard song:

It kind of 'lives' in the mid-range ;).

He walks so much in season one... there's always a long pan shot of him waling along. Annoyed me a bit.
He walked less and flew more in season 2! :)

I also been watching old movies lately. A bit eclectic... Escape From LA, The Final Countdown, Highlander, Flash Gordon (for fun!), The Abyss, and plenty more. Another feel good movie with a great uplifting soundtrack is Wind, with Matthew Modine.

In the space / sci-fi section... do have a look at Firefly. It only had one season (and a movie later) but the stories are real gems. Great acting, great stories. No wonder it has such a huge group of followers, even after being on the air for only one season (and out of order!).

If you have Disney, did you watch Raya and The Last Dragon with your kid? It was very good. Luca is cute too.

I was waiting for Dune from Denis Villeneuve, after seeing the first trailer, I was excited, but the second trailer was cut like a superhero movie, Marvel style, and I got scared... Dune is no Marvel/DC material.

Ok, back to the regular programming... :)

I didn't quite go far enough. I checked the braided leads to the connector tabs, cut the surround and spider to see the coil. Nothing wrong there. I guess I should have removed the dust cap to see the connection between braided leads and voice coil.
Doesn't look like an easy task to be honest, not like the drivers in the thread I linked to.

I just posted in that SS driver repair thread. I believe this issue is due to the newer batch of drivers being made with a new lead free solder formulation. Its not nearly as forgiving as the good old 60/40 stuff.

Also, I believe this driver uses copper clad alu VC windings, which is prone to issues with soldering. Thats why most of the pro audio drivers with this sort of VC wire are diffusion welded to handle the extra mechanical and thermal stress. The TC9 and TD9 drivers are cheaper drivers and made to a budget (in China) and a certain failure rate is expected. Ive learned an important lesson over the years, which is to always buy extra drivers in case of failure and for tolerance matching purposes.

Thank you for that background info.
