Salas SSLV1.3 UltraBiB shunt regulator

Hi Salas,

I've had your PSU's in my new DAC build for some weeks now and had the chance to do a bit of critical listening and wanted to comment on their performance. I'm using separate PSU's for the analog, digital and IV stages, there has been a major improvement in sound quality. Great clarity and precision across the entire spectrum. Best sound I've ever had. I was skeptical that a PSU could make such a large improvement but it sure did. Luckily I bought a bunch of extra boards so I'm going to use them for a preamp project. Thanks for a great design.

Hi Salas

Look at my new rig..... it is a DOPA powered by the truly rare proto board Ultrabib.

The DOPA uses a upa68 LTP IPS, a VAS with beta enhancer loaded by a ccs... the vas output is loaded by the output followers biased by a bjt bias spreader..... it is a mini LIN amp unity gain stable and capable of 40X gain (now set to 3X).

PSU is the ULtrabib that seems to sound even better than my prefered shunt... there is a presence in the low mids without loosing the uber high end definition.

The ultrabib is really good sounding ..... I also use it in my special RIAA (Scandal in Paradise) and there I notice the same sound signature....

The offset is controlled by an opamp..... sounding very high definition now.... it is extremely sensitive to external electrostatic charges.... I can hear soft clicks when I lift the record from the TT.... apart from that it is dead quiet (zero hiss and zero hum), even in my plastic box without a lid...

Ive been doing some experiments with super caps and the bib, want to let everything run for a day or 2 before listening properly due to large number of new parts in the circuit but already it sounds like it might be really really good way to go about a float charged super cap supply that is being explored in Ian Canada thread atm...

I have my super caps connected via switches in case reverse current could damage the bib when its powered off. Knowing I will probably forget to switch them one of the days without more foolproof protection, is that something that could actually damage the bib?

You could also put a high current reverse diode across the Ubib for protection. Anode to output cathode to C1. For positive section that is. Vice versa diode polarity for negative. Although the shunt Mosfet would probably also send enough reverse current to ground.

I will try and figure out a way to disconnect them automatically with a relay or something, having them not discharge is preferable since a full charge takes quite long.

It sounds really nice though already, the current approach has been using LT3042 to float charge the super caps but its very clear when disconnecting charger it has a large influence on sound and for any practical use you really need them on the float charger, the ultra bib sure is an elaborate charger but it might just be worth it for ultimate sound

I am using 5V @ 800mA. The fins in the photo still don’t seem to be big enough. The temperature is getting higher and higher. After 1 hour, the temperature of the fins should reach 60 degrees that I can touch it for more than 20 seconds, but I feel it too hot.

In this case, even if it is locked in the case, it should be difficult to reduce the temperature, because even if the case is large, it will be limited by heat conduction and the heat will still be concentrated near the transistor chip.

In actual listening to music, Salas SSLV1.3 UltraBiB is indeed slightly better than twisted's Placid HD Supply, but UltraBiB is really too hot for a long time. I used to test Placid continuously for 24HR. It still works normally, and the temperature does not keep rising.

So you basically use the Ubib as a CC charge device. With an ldo also or did you manage to set Ubib to 3v3?
