Had a reasonably productive day today

Posted 5th September 2009 at 02:25 PM by wintermute (Wintermutes Rantings)
Updated 25th November 2009 at 12:07 PM by wintermute (added categories speakers and amps)

Sanded down the second box so it is now in a state that is close to ready for veneering. Filled the screw holes with filler and also the bottom of the front baffle which was for some reason a mm or so short. can't remember if that was a measurement stuff up or a problem with the saw accuracy, probably the former I'd guess! Actually now that I think about it, it was an assumption that the mdf was really 25mm thick and it was slightly more... Only problem is the filler takes 48 hours to dry, so next weekend before I can start trying to slap on any veneer.

Also attacked the amp again. Plan was to put in the bypass of the preamp. Got most of the way there but was getting too late so left the drilling of the back pannel (for the rca sockets) for tomorrow. All in all it was a worthwhile excercise. The way the input caps were installed was nothing short of shocking, I think I did it to check it was ok, but never got around to doing it properly, I decided to use cat5e twisted...

04-sep-09 µFonkens arrive in UK

Posted 5th September 2009 at 03:39 AM by planet10

We work closely with Scott Lindgren in the UK. To help facilitate communation, we sent him a set of uFonken with FF85KeN so that we would have a common reference. He got them earlier today and had these initial impressions:

Quote:
Speaking of small speakers, got the uFonken's etc. about 1.30pm & been throwing different albums at them ever since. They haven't batted an eyelid. Christopher Lee reading Dracula on an audiobook? Check. June Tabor? Check. Yo Yo Ma? Check. Loreena McKennitt? Check. Frankie Goes to Hollywood? Check. Mike Oldfield? Check. This is actually bloody annoying. They've no business to work this well. I figured I'd catch them out just before I started typing this by introducing them to PJ Harvey's albums To Bring You My Love & Is This Desire? (officially the eeriest / most disturbing records ever made). Bugger. They haven't keeled over. (Highly recommended albums BTW.) OK, compressed on some of the synth bass (everything short of multiple 15in HE woofers

This amplifier is also an example of original thinking. https://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?t=42259

For anyone interested, here is the URL to the Amplifier.

Someone was discussing a SS version of a tube amp. Look for SS Tabor

https://www.pimmlabs.com/

Cool site.

There are a couple of SS transformer amps.

All of them look cool to me.

Project: RAKK DAC

Posted 31st August 2009 at 06:20 AM by DougL

I have had my RAKK DAC going for a while now. Great DAC. I bought a case and the RAKK DAC passive board to replace the EDCOR transformers I was using and I am using the Shunt volume control to select the shunt resistor.

Goal is to get it done this week.
I will post pictures after its complete.

A series of posts by someone who's nom de plume is an obnoxious comedian. Wonderful.

Harmless. However, it takes up a lot of the board's energy for a time.
This too shall pass.

I haven't found "Texas" yet. The Mods used to post hilarious commentary along with the outrageous posts. As the board has matured, not so much. It was a deep fried Twinkies kind of guilty pleasure.
