Cyrus 1 Caps

Posted 7th October 2009 at 04:16 AM by lrseries3

Hi, anyone know how to determine the polarity of old Elna caps? They are orange electrolitics but have no indication of the negative side.

Thanks Stuart

Is a Room correction trial possible?

By burning a corrected CD, you can easily understand DRC indeed works, but with 1 or 2 bits resolution loss. That's due to the equalization of magnitude frequency response.

Using 18 or even more bits is a must.

I guess it's time to unveil the Beast with a Thousand JFETs.

Here's the first teaser, a circuit panel to hold 588 JFETs and
associated resistors.
What can I say. Its a pleasure to see a master at work.

26-sep-09 Floyd Toole speaks

Posted 26th September 2009 at 04:30 PM by planet10

Thursday i took the ferry over to Canada to attend a lecture by Floyd Toole at an AES presentation.

The lecture covered off a summary of the contents of his book. It probably was more enlightening for those that haven't read the book, but i was able to get a few details added.

He also signed my book, and really liked my title - Frugal-phile(tm) -- he said we need more of them

I have added this to my absolutely required audio reading list along with Leviton's "This is your brain on music" Very complentary books.

Floyd's book summarizes the 40 years of work he has done on loudspeakers & rooms.

The 3 most interesting things in the book are
1/ under well controlled & designed blind listening tests there is a very high level of consistency in what listeners consider best sounding
2/ a FR metric has been developed which has a high correlation with what people prefer. Unfortunately this...

The day Sydney saw red!

Posted 23rd September 2009 at 12:10 PM by wintermute (Wintermutes Rantings)
Updated 25th November 2009 at 12:13 PM by wintermute (added to category misc)

I woke up this morning, and immediately had a slightly uneasy feeling. There was a strange orange glow seeping through the gaps in the blinds! I tentatively pulled aside one of the vertical pannels and saw what appeared to be red fog. Thoughts of armorgedden, and the cover of Midnight Oil's "red sales in the sunset" came to mind. I was about to grab the camera when Mya decided it was time to wake up and have some milk. Best not to delay the milk supply for a 21 month old with a nasty cold, or armageddon might seem like a palletable alternative, so I made the milk and appeased the small one.

By the time I got the camera, the sky was more orange than red, took a snap and started to get ready for work.

It would have been sensible to take the good camera with me but I was not thinking along those lines as I hurried off to work. Driving to the train station was weird in itself, the headlights of oncoming cars had a strange blue tinge, and so did the...

The MTM's are progressing

Posted 21st September 2009 at 03:13 AM by wintermute (Wintermutes Rantings)
Updated 2nd April 2010 at 12:35 PM by wintermute (added to category speakers)

I'm in a way glad that it is taking so long to finish these speakers after my four year break from them! If it had have taken a couple of weekends I would have kicked myself for not having done it sooner!

One thing that having had a four year break does is make it easier to slow down and do things properly, afterall, a month or two is relatively short in comparison

I got over two of the biggest fears with this project on the weekend. One was whether I was going to be able to do the veneering properly (this seems so far not to be an issue) and the other was whether my plans to put a 22mm chamfer on the front baffles was going to work (a test on some scrap MDF worked well). The main thread for the project is here with all the latest pictures

How to finish the veneer is as yet undecided, but I'll worry about that in a few weeks

The next big hurdle after finishing the boxes is going to be getting decent freq response measurements,...

The best answer comes from the barrel of a microphone! YES?

Nope. This forum often forgets our real objectives. To wit: The best answer comes from our ears, and within some given room.

Soundcraft GIGRAC not powering up.

Posted 19th September 2009 at 06:42 PM by Cheap Bugger

I have a GIGRAC 1000 that will not power up. External (ceramic) fuse and all internal fuses (incl power supply) have been checked. There are currently 2 of these units on e-bay with, it appears to be, the same problem. I would gather there is a common issue with these units.

Does anyone have an idea as to what I can look at to solve this issue, or has anyone solved this themselves?
