Yep. These were my assumed conclusions regarding these types of speakers before all but giving up on them. With my lack of real-world passive crossover experience, it'd probably be in my best interest to continue avoiding them.I was on essentially the same search at about the same time. I got a pair of P.Audio 15CXHB because the spec sheet indicated it was relatively smooth, and had an unusual amount of overlap at the crossover.
This turned out to be right - it was very easy to build a passive crossover for. Also: they really are stupidly efficient, as claimed.
The downside is that, I never got them sounding "perfect" and eventually demoted them from being my in use system. Cleanly recorded vocals aren't as real sounding as they could be. The HF is pretty good, but has a little bit of grit / "steely" sound (from HF spikes?) that (to my ears) is present in most compression driver + horn systems.
e.g. in 2012 I ran one channel based on the coaxial (plus dual 15 to help the LF), and the other channel with dual 15s crossed to a B&C DE950 (a fairly upmarket 2" driver), and found either option to sound essentially alike. Both were pretty good but not quite "real", and both had a little bit of HF harshness that stopped them from being my "forever" speakers.
it looks like it could be decent with DSP to get a sharp enough crossover filter but I agree this is not competitive with KEF. Particularly the woofer going wild above 2k should be fixable with perhaps a different edge termination that's more lossy. The tweeter response looks pretty good though, probobly due to that plastic ring between the woofer and tweeter.$ 439 is a heck of a lot of money for such of middle of the road job..
or about 40 bucks for a car stereo coaxial
because that is what the response looks like.
plenty of company's making affordable dome mids
and ribbons.
which would walk all over a coax
otherwise there is more a romance and cool factor with
larger coax vintage units which would be something of more interest.

Anyone notice that datasheet is 5 years old, from 2018? Surely the 2023 release is further improved/refined?!
@USXX
Everyone is pleased to see the next level of performant coaxials from SB Acoustics. The Satori coaxial was recently demoed at AXPONA and Munich.
End users are looking forward to purchase a high end coaxial for their traditional stereo hifi, Atmos HT or vehicle use.
When do you expect international distributors to receive their allotments?
Will you be able to send samples to @bikinpunk or @HiFiCompass for independent measurements?

Y'all need to pay more attention to SICA coaxials

No one brought this up, but the many wide range drivers, many of these with whizzers, are similar to coaxial drivers and I would place them into the same general category. There are many examples of speakers using these wide range drivers.
I would agree with some of the comments, that the wide range driver/coaxial drivers are a form of economy system, to reduce the total number of drivers to simplify the system. Economy does not mean low cost though, as many of the coaxial drivers are more expensive than two separate drivers. Economy does not mean low quality either, as there are many examples of wide range drivers/coaxial drivers sounding really good.
A clear example of where wide range/coaxial drivers make great sense are drivers mounted in waveguides/horns, which eliminates the distance between the large midrange horn and potential tweeter, of course there is the Synergy horn as an answer to that.
I use Lowther DX65 drivers in front waveguides handling 500 to 8 k hz, and supertweeters mounted above the waveguide - this is a great use of such drivers which can handle such a wide frequency range.

Hmm, I thought I did along with the vintage tri-ax variant, but must have been on another co-ax thread. Anyway, 'preaching to the choir' with me. 😉

Some. A 2-way with a mechanical XO.

This one looks much better! Price still $439 a piece? (Update - australian dollar is 0.61 to the euro and 0.67 to USD)
Quite some improvement since the first version ... now need a Klippel Hero to confirm who's the leader of the pack 🙂 ..... (MWBSOAT or Erin's Rotten 5 .. lol)
Here all the links I had found convenience/comparison :

For some more stereo sensations , here's an album that has a bunch of songs with spectacular mixing on the voices (mostly) but you'll need to listen a little louder than average to get the full effect :
It takes some times to go thru the tracks to find those who are more melody-driven but those are like good friends nice to meet them again and again!
The remastered album is well done no add compression or dull sound .
Oh , and what I especially like in this album is the sound of natural handclaps (for instance , 1st track ...) , rarely used today ....
have a listen!

Nice one. Care to share some pics from the building process?@krivium Had a few people trying to find the logo on them to work out what company made them. Pretty much universal aclaim for the sound. We made 4 and are now making a second batch with some cosmetic improvments. The dispersion pattern of the 12FCX76 is ideal for this monitor application, also the large compresion driver means massive HF output potential and the overall design of the driver makes the crossover easy. They have optimised flared ports which alow the response to be flattened to 60Hz with a big amp. They also work well as small scale PA tops with subs.

On the topic I just really love the sound of these PA coaxials in domestic use. So dynamic and with a large body, everything just sounds larger and louder even with a small amp at low levels, compared to using hifi speakers. I’ve build a few myself, one with a celestion 12” which I’m really happy with and another with the Eminence Beta 12cx which is a bit more struggle to get right but still fun for the money.
The beta cx now sits in a black painted ply cabinet with a few horns as well so I have some options to play around with HF using PSD2002 mounted in the coax and ASD1001 mounted in an APT150 flare, and finally the APT50 on top. At the moment only the coax is used which is why the speaker looks like it’s placed upside down. So far using only stock crossovers.
The celestion is in an oak cabinet that seems to work very good with the eminence Cx crossover. A bit bright in the HF but I can tame that on the amp.
