why are old school amps worth so much?

Nobody got on that? I have too many sitting here and just don't need more smaller amps. Crutchfield also sold soundstreams right? One day I watched a special edition 150 go for <20 shipped. There are a couple people in there that usually suck all those up and try to resell them for 10x as much.

They try to say a Magnum is a MTX too, but is a Visonik and cheap China build. Don't know who imported them, likely Circuit City who sold them.

Zombi, that amp reminds me of an Urban Audio I have sitting here that I know nothing about. It says darlington drive on it or something, but the endcaps are inside like that and same shape. On the other hand I would not call mid 90s old, mid 80s amps are old.

Quick question about the older ppi amp? Does anybody know where to find any info on what was built from when and such?

The first OEM work I'm aware of was the Crutchfield line, which was introduced in '87, I think. Others began to show up a year or two later.
The only other PPI "brand" I can date off the top of my head was Sansui, which changed from Korean-looking products in '87 to PPI Art-series look in '90. The Sansui PPI's sounded good, were solid power but not under rated at all. They had a problem with transistor solder joints coming apart. It was easy to resolder, but a pain to have to do it repeatedly. At the time, I attributed that to the painted white heatsink which just ain't great for dissipating heat away from the transistors.

It was confusing at that time because so many new amp lines were showing up. Some seemed obviously OEM'd by PPI or Zed, but it was overwhelming to try to keep up with all the new stuff from inside one shop.

I still have a couple years worth of Installation News and CAE or CSR from then, the ads may tell some tales. I'll have a look later. Would anyone be interested in scans of ads or articles?

Maybe others can contribute their knowledge?

/\ don't forget the ppi "pyramid" amps 🙂 I think I have some old ca&e too, along with one of their amplifier buying guide issues. I remember the issue where they tested 3 or 4 external crossovers. One was linear power, one la sound and the other two were well known brands. I laughed when the la sound beat them all. It was perfect timing because the issue came out when I was trying to decide on a crossover, lol.

MTX still makes an amp they call the terminator....looks like a pyle (joke in itself!).
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

THe only one that I know of for sure were the Terminator MTA (even had the PPI logo on the board!). I remember these amps and really wanted one but by buddies all told me that MTX were duke. Never ended up with one....some friends!

oh the memories!

Lol, I have a sansui here that the outputs came off. Really weird when the 12 I had on it started playing at half volume. Bought a terminal strip for it going to put that on and toss that stupid plug. No, don't need more amps! Just had three more show up.

I had a coustic 150 and two 300s. I got rid of all of them, but to a friend that still has them and I have dibs to get them back....but he will never sell them. He has a 500 too.😱 I ran those 300s hard, they are good amps. I got rid of the last 300 because a blaupunkt would run my IB subs harder....an STK chip amp. Still have two of those. I was never into ppi, they were not around here much back then.

The LP X02 crossovers were good.

My friend says he still has the coustics and some LP amps installed in his muscle car trunk, along with 6 10" subs IB. One of these days I'm going up there and taking my camera. Car has been on blocks for years, but is drivable and all. He said he took the 3 batteries out of it so has not fired it up in some time. I remember it being too loud, just :smash: inside the head!

I have a few of the Coustic 300's. Looking for a 150 and a 500. From what I remember, they even made a 1000. Only remember it in pictures, never saw one up close. I have a NIB early 80's Majestic that is pretty much the same amp too.

On the PPI type amps, here are a few I remember not mentioned...

Cruise Power (The gold one in the picture above is basically a Modified PPI 2300 that puts out full power at 8-16 Ohm rather than 4-ohm)

Fultron (only made one model that I know of, grey, about 10" x 8", and an angled heatsink, with DIN)

Pro-Line (white, and you could drill out the side plate to get to the DIN. It was hidden.) Would like to have one of them for my collection if anyone has one. Model ??? Think it was 2100 and 2050 )

Quickest way to tell on the PPI/Zed design is the Speaker Wiring sticker on the bottom and the DIN plugs. I will think of some more. I am guessing there were at least 20+ different brands. Maybe more.

I remember seeing that! Seems like a rep showed it to us.

Another of the early ones was G&S, in '86. They were a speaker company with Redline speakers and G&S Designs.
I remember the rep bringing one in. It was the first heatsink I saw to use a color other than black. Looked kinda cheesy compared to everything else IMO. We didn't do anything to speak of with their products.

One for the record

One honarable mention that didnt get mentioned in the cross-market of
amplifiers is that here in my home state of Florida if you go by the original retail store of the Jl audio owners, you will find on display an original JL Audio amp. This original and/or prototype was made by PPI.
