why are old school amps worth so much?

I agree with what most said, couldn't afford them when I was in high school, but have more disposable income now.

I have a couple amps I don't see too often, the current collection is:

Soundstream Rubicon 555
Cadence Ultrashock A2
Cadence Ultrashock A5+HC
Alpine 3527S
Denon DCA-400

I think I was the only one in my circles that ever had Cadence amps (pretty sure these were made in the USA). I really liked them and probably would have used them in the truck if I had room for two.

That RF looks like a huge amp, that must be under rated 12v watts or it is 1 ohm stable.

A reseller snagged this little HK 260240900662 I should have bid I wanted to pick up another one to try on front stage. Some went for near a 100 not long ago, not sure why as 260s have gone for less.

I have a 3527s, 3522s, 3542, broken 35?? like a 3542, mrv-1002, mrv-F353, two 3518, 3517, mrd-m301, mrd-m500, maybe more I forget. Man, I should get rid of some.🙄

Definately not one ohm stable. They were pushing its limits to get 1000 total watts rms loaded at 2ohms into each channel with the components they were using. They were powerful, but on the boundaries. I knew a couple of guys who had them when I was in middle school and they always ran the black "the punch" subs with them.

Powerful, but on the boundaries. That's a good way to describe it.

It was RF's heyday and the 1000 was their flagship. It was no cheater amp, 250W x 4 into 2 ohms, and no more under-rated than other Rockfords from that time period. Outrageous price, you could get a pair of big-name 250W x 2 amps and an external crossover waaay cheaper. But, you wouldn't have a "Power 1000."

The factory with their "Rockford Technical Training Institute" was encouraging shops to load any of their amps down with as many speakers as they saw fit, while keeping the impedance at 2 ohms min.
The 1000 was what they portrayed as the extreme extension of that philosophy, and Rockford would demo the amps current capabilities by arc welding with it.

EVERY Rockford fan worshipped the Power 1000. Most of those who took the plunge used their "Pro" series woofers, as RF would make you think there were no other woofers on the planet capable of withstanding this extreme amplifier.

All of this was excellent marketing on their part, and is what helped RF secure it's place selling very expensive products.

I'd be curious to know if the '93 amateur 601-1000 IASCA winner used a Chrome POWER 1000 as the auction claimed this amp was in the winning car.

Apart from nostalgia I see no point in running a class AB on subs in my car if above say 300wrms. And running those big ones on high side just take so much space. I guess if I have money to waste or an old car I might just for fun, but these prices just seem crazy to me. Who cares about 4x250rms when you can buy a 2,000rms class d for a few hundred that will blow its doors off without needing as much battery or alternator to run it. I have two 1Kw strappable that I will likely sell for 100 each, but hey each to his own.😕

I remember back then, those were the largest amps there were and commanded a large price as well...there just was nothing else unlike today. The first time I put in a new LP 5002 was the first time I used earplugs in a car because of the stereo.😎 I don't need that now, then again that power level is not that big a deal today. Other day I saw a guy say his modded 5002 did 2Kw, I really wondered how that was done and how much input voltage he ran.

Eleventy thousand volts DC, and a Flux capacitor...lol lol lol

He did that with Magic Smoke, only he inhaled it,🙂 :whazzat: :whazzat: :whazzat: Must have been a TIPS mod......:xeye:

When ever you hear these stories just look at the output devices and there SOA curves and realize your being smoked by a :joker:

IPP < Instantaneous Peak Power Watts Maybe lol lol lol

I just love how some guys :wiz: can get away with breaking all the laws of Physics surrounding electronics and not get caught by the Galactic traffic cop::headshot:

I have a Fosgate (before Rockford) PR2100 with the pre-amp, cables and I think I even have the manual for it. I purchased this back in 1978 and was wondering if I could get some dollars for it on ebay. 😕

I had it reconditioned twice and fixed the volume slider once. I was working about 6 years ago when I replaced with a newer amp.

thanks for the replays.

Thinning out the collection? 🙂

Here is a newer one going cheap per watt: 220237080782

I just love reading these ads, they are the best. Check this: "IT HAS TWO 30 AMP FUSE SO YOU KNOW IT CAN PRODUCE ATLEAST 500 WATTS RMS" 290233226865 (ca260, yes 2x60watts)😉 So two if them can keep up with the above RF 4x250? Maybe that takes two flux capacitors?😕

Transformer and rail caps, but in that one they must have been replaced with high density ion rectified proton emitting spheroid plasma current generators.😉 😀 In those amps the board is in the bottom, and all the tall stuff is under that hump while the transistors are on risers that go up to the sink. I think there is one on ampguts, and photos. Yes I was watching Enterprise on the tube last night, lol.

He says 25 ohm, I have no idea what good they would be for. Someone bought it. 😕

Some of this is so funny to watch, take this 280229725938 and I have bought working ones some NIB for 40 or less TMD....and look what this guy paid for a broken one! Search ended items on them, but there is a smaller 360w one that looks the same.
