Head_spaz,
I suppose Irgun and The Stern Gang was the name of a popular klezmer band. Or perhaps the only way to get a state is to assasinate the UN Secetary General or blow up a hotel or two.
As for electing terrorists, spare me the ********.

No it EFECTS a lot of the rest of the world

Actually, we let people say and believe pretty much what they want here in the US. That bothers a lot of the rest of the world.

Re: Gastapo
No, we also have free speach. The problem is rather that your
president and his office have a tremendous amount of
power and influence on the rest of the world because the US
is by far the strongest economical and military superpower.
If our prime minister says something stupid, it will ususally
not even make into the internationall media, even less have
much effect on the world. A careless choice of words from
Bush can have quite a big impact on the world. If Sweden
threatened to invade another country for whatever reason,
others would probably just laugh and not take it seriously.
If the US says the will, it is taken very seriously.

This place gets enough U.S. - bashing as it is. Easy to laugh off since it all comes from across the Atlantic, but try not to go too far...
Quite right Lusso5,
If there is any portrait on Ashcroft's wall, it is that of Lavrenti Beria.
I'm not familiar with the laws in Sweden, but free speech is far from universal- in fact, the vast majority of the world has significant restrictions. I was surprised at some of the restrictions in Germany and France, of all places.
The presidency in the US system is highly visible- and not very powerful.

Border control is irrelevant to free speech. I don't understand the connection you're trying to draw.

rfbrw, PLEASE watch the language. I hate having to go in and manually edit notes.
Ha! ha! Proof positive of censorship in the US. I spy the hand of Ashcroft in this.

SY, everything irrelevant. You are allowed to do free speech - in the US and here. You only have to carry the consequences. Get no Job, be controlled (not only at the border), Don´t be allowed to cross it, get some time in jail (without beeing sued) beeing tortured or killed in jail, ...
Its the same in your country and in europe.
With one big difference: We do not kill and torture people who are into jail, and we put in only about 10% of the amount your country does. Your country also need to invade other countrys and put people in jail, kill them and also kill innocent children playing on the street, you call it "bringing freedom and democracy" Bring the right for free speech and beeing killed by solders and american policemen.
So much about your free speech and a little border control.
You don´t want to see it and thus you are responsible on what happens. Your country turns into fascism, the news bring new proofs every day.

I think most or all western european countires have free speach
today, although some minor restrictions might occur in certain
cases. There are discussion in Sweden for instance whether
neo-nazi group should be allowed to spread all their propaganda.
Personally I think it would be wrong to stop them, whatever I
think of them. Free speach is fundamental in a democracy.
The visibility of your president in international media is enough
to have a strong impact on world politics, since he is a symbol
for the superpower united states. As for power, I should have
referred to the whole political apparateous including the
congress. What I mean is simply, the stronger and more influential
you are, the more you have to watch your words, and Bush
is not perceived as very good in that respect in the rest of
the world. Just a simple thing as using the world "crusade"
which I understand is used very loosely in american english
is most certainly treated more in its original sense by many
muslims, which is dangerous.

Neonazi groups operate here, make speeches, publish books. I think that's a good thing. Ideas stand or fall on their merits, and the total lack of attention that gets paid to these guys is evidence that your attitude is a good one.
Just a simple thing as using the world "crusade"
When will the Arab "leaders" stop using the word "jihad"?
"You're fairly unfamiliar with life in the US, it would seem."
Thats absolutely unrelated to the problems with human rights and a working law system your country has.
You can deny, you can ignore, you can shut you eyes - its your problem. Thanks god it will not be mine.

Nice reference you got over there...SY said:When will the Arab "leaders" stop using the word "jihad"?
Soon you will be left with freedom of speech alone. The rest will be audited/monitored/recorded/registered etc.SY said:Border control is irrelevant to free speech. I don't understand the connection you're trying to draw.
It will be nice to see your reaction... 😀 Still bragging about it?
Please name some... within the context of the reply if possible?SY said:I was surprised at some of the restrictions in Germany and France, of all places.

Don't go to America - They will shoot your children in the streets, put you in jail and torture you, then kill you, and spend too much money doing it !
Oh, and we're Fascists too: We put the supreme race above all (even though were the most diverse nation), we're led by a dictator (even though our congress has the power), we have no constitution or bill of rights (even though we do), and reject human rights (even though we give more foreign aid than any other country).

Christer,
From what you say, the rest of the world is in a tizzy over semantics.
If Bush says "Sweden Sucks" does your country get depressed?
