No, we may get annoyed but not much more. The problem in
the current situation is not so much how european countries
interpret him. Most of us probably take it with a grain of salt
and think that it is just his big mouth that slipped. What does
matter a lot in the current situation with islamistic terrorism

Read MEMRI, for a start. They provide translations of speeches by major Arab political and religious leaders and editorials from government-controlled Arab media. They've been savaged by people who don't like what they report, but they've never been caught in mistranslations or fabrications.
Speech that is deemed racist, anti-Semitic, or derogatory, for example. Can you start a chapter of Hitler Youth in Germany? Now, some may argue that these are good restrictions (I wouldn't, but I understand the argument on the other side), but they are indeed restrictions.

I think that's the key. Muslim has to be a foundamentally good religion: otherwise it wouldn't have surivived til today. What's happening is that it is hijacked by some extreme fanatics as a means to vent their frustration at the Islamic world's lack of progress, vs. the rest of the world.
Rather than looking inside of them, they elected to blame others for their misery (sometimes deservedly so) and to use violence to revenge on others supposedly responsible for this.
Too bad because otherwise they would have been able to catch the last train out of town.
