I was sort of called to make toob gadget for someone ("it must have toobz to sound sweeter and that we can say "It has Toobz!""), also in form of so-so cased functional prototype
so, finished it today, sort of Iron Pre but instead of JFet buffer, something I'm sure I didn't invented but considering that I didn't found it in spades around so being forced to call it somehow - let's say Tube-MOS Compound buffer
What's missing in picture is what I'm going to mount tomorrow - pair of Cinemag repeaters; today confirmed functionality with crude PSU units*** and how it sounds as strict buffer
So tomorrow it'll get additional +6db (or +12db) of gain, and up to demoing
*** instead of, in case of already known Iron Pre, nice +/-15V shunt regs and aux/relays 24V series reg, I needed to make these:
-6V3 series reg for ECC88/6DJ8/6Н23П heater
-crude zener-source follower series reg for 90V Anode supply
- 2 independent LM317 series regs, connected to get +/-25V for mosfet part of circuit
In the end, it'll have all of above as one per channel, heating series while all other shunt regs;
Yes, it has cap combo in between follower and autoformer, but who cares ......... when follower is having ~ 5R of Rout
already did all pcb work ........ but - in form of semi/finished product, when properly made - oh boy it is so damn complicated!!! , considering all time delays and routine steps (when heating, when low and high voltage, when relays for inputs and un-mute) ....... as planned - everything govered by logic module so all covered in code and whatnot in hardware
while signal still going to Rome just through Toob-MOS combo and few zillion feet of ironed wire
and it'll need no less than 3 custom Donuts, with additional small pcb for SS Mains relay and primaries connection
and yes, proto made as SE, but I'll have both SE and Bal; everything mentioned I got squeezed in form factor even sliiiiiiiiiightly smaller than Iron Pumpkin MoBo

first two pics in #`944 are balanced, second two are SE
cheapest Fountek from 6-7 years ago; as far as I know - cheapest now is the same, maybe faceplate round
connected all the time, single cap and few ohms in series, xover somewhere in region of 15-20KHz, I forgot exactly
believe it or not, as I said , signal path is still ultrasimple - buffer and autoformer ......... and yes, I sinned - elco bypassed with MKC in between these two
everything else is necessity
what looks complicated is result of dual mono construction; single common thing is 8V secondary for heating both toobz
everyone can make/is making a toob gadget and due to toob forgiving nature, even crappy ones are going to sound "nice"
but, when made properly, there is plethora of things to cover
just for comparing sake .......... post above is, say, fancy Iron Pre with Toobz
