Double Wall oven. Found a few bad solder joints on the control board that were causing it to intermittently shut down saying it had a power failure, and prevent use of the lower oven showing that the door was open. Both specific joints were the right ones to cause those failures. Glad to have that fixed!
Failures like that are typical of modern appliances that have been designed with electronics in them.
A sort of planned obsolescence....
"a policy of producing consumer goods that rapidly become obsolete and so require replacing, achieved by frequent changes in design, termination of the supply of spare parts, and the use of nondurable materials."
And if parts are available, the price of them are bloated, in an effort to provide manuafacturers and distributors additional income.
Either way, you pay dearly.
I don't like any modern appliance with that design, all my stuff is good old "rotary timers" or mechanical thermostats, and the appliance seems to last decades without failure.
I wonder how many dishwashers I would have bought since this "electronic boom"..... because my 1971 KitchenAid dishwasher is still going strong... my 1985 GE fridge is too.... along with my 1984 Maytage washer/dryer.
But of course, people are "led" to modernize through hype, advertizing, and the like.
I'm certainly one that the big companies aren't making money off of.
LOL!
Investments into consumer goods are mostly bad investments. Of course, its good to have a fully functional, modern household. But far too many people buy in the end overprized products for more money they initially had in their product budget. Thats the aim of the industry, to rip the customer off his money and to sell new products. Without that, our economy would have to go bancrupt, the government tells us. But is this true?
I bought lately a new SUV. A clever purchase by an EU reimport. This car would have be approx 15K more expensive in the german dealers showroom. And when I had bought the same car with the same engine, just with a different badge (Audi instead of Volkswagen), it would have easily cost twice the price. Means 30K€ more than my car. But when I walk on the streets here, I see many of those overpriced cars. Bought just for more luxury, more prestigous reasons. So I have to assume that many customers aren't short of money to buy those luxury cars and that a double price spending is just worth for them to go after the more expensive car. And cars are just a part of an ordinary household. When the father can bouy a new 50K plus car, the wife expects to get a complete new kitchen, too. And the kids want new toys, maybe a bike for 5K or computers. So I think we are living in a very rich period, where people can buy every five year new cars for a total insane amount of money because for two of those middle class cars one can buy a small flat. So why not go to the bank with the money, buy a flat, pay the bank with the flats rent and buy a smaller, less prestigous car, too? Thats why I say most people are consumer idiots, never have learned to save or invest money with a maximum profit. And thats the reason why an efficiency with money and intelligent investment will not be teached in primary school. They want us to be consumer fools, or label victims. Thats what the pope once said to the president: you take care for the masses to stay poor, I will take care for them to stay stupid.

My computer mouse left button must have seen some million clicks as it started to get unreliable and generating double clicks, so opened up the mouse and swapped place on left and right microswitches, hopefully we are good to go for another million left-clicks... 🙂
It has always always been the scroll wheel that has gone intermittent for me. The HP wireless mouse I have at the moment is now over four years old and still perfect. Generally other mice (all good brand names) have lasted little more than a year or so before the said problems emerge.
Always something. Just re-caped my Parasound Z3. I think I fixed my Creek amp, yet to test. I was getting faults on my laptop. Seems to have been memory that got too hot. Out with the old 4G, in with a new 8 and so far so good. Roofers messed up the ridge vent on my porch, so I have to order new cap shingles today and redo that. Just fixed the line feed on my string trimmer. Crud builds up in them and they bind.
I WISH I can claim I fixed my desktop. I am getting the infamous Ndu.sys BSOD. Best guess is Avast not getting along with MalewareBytes but it only happens every few days, so hard to tell. No, not old drivers, not WIFI. Started with a Windows update.

So, you don't NEED an SUV, why not a Sandero or Citigo? I'll keep my 10 year old Golf GTI thank you. 😀
Yes, we are in a very rich period. Instant gratification and a culture that screams we need more. Next day delivery of almost everything makes it even worse. As a kid, waiting two weeks for an order from Sears was normal. Now we get upset when it takes that long from China. World events may be going to teach us all a lesson soon and we will have to re-evaluate need from want. I wonder how many are ready?
James Dyson in the UK who I think is the richest man in the UK made his money on over priced home goods. I can buy a vacuum cleaner from my local retailer for about £50. He sells his for about £400. Yet he sells shed loads of them.
Some people get into the mindset of expensive must be better.
My cheapie vacuum cleans floors good enough for me so why spend more ?
Ironically there are hundreds of failed Dyson items for sale on ebay !

Mooly, Bad luck with any but Logitec. Microsoft the worst.
The Microsoft 9 pin serial J mouse was a classic - if you cleaned the damned rollers 🙂
These days, I use a Corsair mouse. Hardware macros are nice.

I'm using a Reddragon keyboard now and I have to admit that it's really great for the money!

I have at least two MS ones that succumbed to the scroll wheel issue. I used to open them up and clean them (and open the little wheel mechanism/contacts) but they never lasted.
The Logitech mouse I'm using here is about 10 years old and nothing wrong with it.
Along with a Logitech illuminated keyboard that's 6 years old.

Worst brand ever and indeed astonishing to see people buy a new one when the old one turned out to be unreliable. Totally overpriced and they are not ergonomic as well.
People become angry when you tell them this stuff is defective because it is bad quality 🙂 The marketing and technobabble are of very high and convincing level though!
I still have a vacuum from 40 years ago. My dad bought it for my mom, and it was too heavy for her. They gave it to me. It's heavy, noisy, and not very ergonomic. It's also never required a single repair. It's been used daily for at least the last six months, since my "new" vacuum (15 year old Kenmore that I liked) broke twice in a few months and I didn't repair it the second time.
Someone recently gave me a new vacuum. It's nice and lightweight. It also started literally falling apart the first time I used it. Every time I've used it something broke. If I used it daily then it wouldn't last a month. And despite being lightweight, the ergonomics are non-existent.
Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't understand how this is better.

Is that the legendary burn-in?🙂Seems it didn't like the reflow oven:
I've got a 1988 Eureka upright and a 1989 Eureka canister...... still going great after decades of use.
To hell with all those "new" ones and bagless crap.
They don't hold up.

I have two bagless vacuums.
One is a metal shop vac that I bought new for 40$ (the only vacuum I've ever bought) and the other is a Bissell Powergroom that someone threw away. Works perfectly.

Is it a Kirby -- my Mom killed one after about 20+ years and then bought another at the Salvation Army.
Kirby vacs were sold door-to-door like Encyclopediae -- the company was "rolled up" into Chicago Pacific which was eventually purchased by Warren Buffet. I had the pleasure of working for ChicPac's die casting plant in Cleveland as a forklift driver in college!
A four burners ( radiants ) electric plate from Whirlpool.
A burner was not working. Just a broken wire.
Now, it heats right but there is a noise the three others don't do.
I cannot figure out whether that is normal operation, a warning then for what, a failure.
The manufacturer documentation is plain useless.
