I overdid The Doors 20 years ago and I don't have a lot of time for them these days
I was an avid Doors fan from the moment I first heard Light My Fire.....until I went to THE concert. You know The concert where Jim allegedly masturbated on stage in Miami. Did he or didn't he? From my vantage point, I don't know.
Nobody that any of my friends talked too ever saw anything other than a drunken Jim falling down on stage, forgetting the words to his own songs, and verbally abusing every one there, from the audience to the police. Jim performed maybe 4 or 5 songs, or parts of songs. He kept telling the audience to get naked, and many already had. It had to be over 100 degrees in that building. From my place on the rear wall I could see that Jim was shirtless (so was most of the audience, including many females), but appeared to have his pants on.
The venue sucked. It was an old steel building with no air conditioning. It was right on the water on Biscayne Bay, and had large steel doors that led to the water for boat access in a previous life. This made for a path to sneak in if you didn't mind getting wet with NASTY water from all the boats that flushed directly into the bay in the nearby marina (no longer legal). Hint, low tide is your friend.
We had seen Steppenwolf by this path a few weeks earlier. Under the door, up along the steel framework, and into an empty seat in the back row. This time is was different. There were zillions of people, far more than the building should have held, and all the seats were GONE. SRO everywhere, from the stage, to the steel framework holding up the rusty walls, people and more people. There were even people outside on the roof looking in through the broken ventilation system.
Newspaper reports the next day said that the promoters ripped out the seats so they could sell about 8000 tickets, for a 3200 seat venue. The cops said that there were 10 to 15000, people in the area.
I took my Doors records to school after the show, and gave them all away. Other than a few songs the I hear on the radio, I don't listen to the Doors any more.

Jim probably was a dick going by what you've said and what I've read. You can't dispute though that their studio stuff was amazing. Wagner was a despicable anti-semetic bastard who Hitler idolized, but he was still a fantastic composer. Its like some surgeons have despicable personalities, but they may be the best in their field and save and / or vastly improve peoples quality of life, you still have to admire them for that, personalities aside.

In a big publicity stunt a few years ago the governor of the state of Florida granted Jim an official pardon for his crimes on the 40th anniversary of his conviction......and still there is nobody that ever saw the crime for which he was convicted in the court of public opinion.
Judging from some of the sounds flowing from the speakers, it IS possible that he committed lewd acts with a microphone.

JM definitely straddled the line between asset and liability.

The Doors released an album after Jim checked out called Other Voices. It didn't sell well. This song made it to the radio for a while, at least in south Florida. I agree Krieger was the best of the Doors.

I couldn't get the song to play from this thread, but I assume it's Mosquito Burrito. At least it's the only song I know from the post Jim era that had any traction (sadly).

despicable personalities
Nowadays, the fans have sexual intercourse on stage, while the band members are only required to play.
The times they have a been changin.
(neurologists and internal medicine docs are the worst. Most difficult surgeons are orthopaedic hatchers, aka Farmer John. They'll curse worse than a 2 dollar hooker, throw stuff at the nearest person in an operating room, but gentle as a lamb if the buck per minute target is met)

To my mind, it's even more complicated than that, because music has such an emotional impact, and we respond to apparent feeling and sincerity in the performer, but I can't listen to Michael Jackson with the same simple appreciation since all the weirdness became public. Whatever was going on in his head was a long way from what I imagined was going on in his head when I was just going on the basis of the music.
this thread is more about memories, than
drugs and music,
in tubelab.com case it's more about associating that days bad bay water smells and memories = tryin' to forget that Jim Morrison public encounter. I reckon similar to my first impressions with cheap tequila, thankfully much later I learned Jose C was more at fault. https://youtu.be/eAHQ-9Fniac?t=2m50s

Jimbo, boy, you're a croc of ****,
You're a boozed, selfish thug;
Why don't you give your mouth a go
And in the other hole put a plug?
By Christ you've got a long long way
On a schoolboy's talent with words -
One crappy bit of symbolism
And you're adored by a army of turds.
You're a selfish, rude, arrogant prick;
You're basically pretty stupid;
Your mysticism's a lump of ****,
And so are all the girls you rooted.
So don't talk about being sad and lonely
Or ******* misunderstood
Because underneath that self-pitying phoney
Is a brutal, selfish hood.
I support the police that took you off stage,
I support the fact you bled;
I support the cops who carried you off,
I support the fact you're dead.
I think that you're a troubled guy
And I think that's nothing new;
I think your fans are a bunch of turds
Almost as immature as you.
And when I'm in my supermarket
And some prick pushes in front of my trolley
I'll be reminded of your stinking bravado
And I'll ask the **** to say sorry.
You fans would excuse any rudeness
Just because it comes from you -
You'd tell them to go drop dead
And they'd say, "Oh, how true, how true, how TRUE."
You need a nine to five job, Jimbo;
You need to get to Flinders St. by train -
Go and find yourself a regular income,
Then you can write a song about pain.
Try and save for the kids' school fees;
Take some care when you drive a car;
Put your rubbish in a bin
You ******* great rock super star.
You've spawned a host of ****-sure *****
Who are nearly always filthy rich,
And think because they're a bit like Jimbo
They can act like stinking pricks:
An army of brainless, arty youth
That look down upon us common plods -
But they barrack for good ol' Jimbo
Like the ******* Richmond cheer squad.
So when you're listening to Morrison Hotel
And Jimbo's in top form
Whining about this harsh cruel world
And the fact he was ever born
Remember that his fans are rapt
And mourning their suffering lives,
And go down and discuss it at Subterrain -
And least, if Daddy'll drive.
Jimbo, king of the private school kids:
The girls from P.L.C.
Who identify with his tortured soul
Because they've got dropped by friend number three,
Who was Kent from Xavier College -
In H.S.C. he got a "A" for English,
And between Jimbo and William Blake
He hasn't the brains to distinguish.
Jimbo, father of a generation
Of private school depression idols;
From Nick Cave on, they don't kill themselves -
Just tell us why they're suicidal.
He's made self-pity legitimate;
It means we'll have to face
One after another artist with integrity,
Like REO Speedwagon - sorry, I meant Hugo Race.
Well, up your **** Jimbo old man,
Up your ******* hole:
You're a prick pure and simple -
It's about time you were told;
And up your **** to all your fans;
Up your **** to your tortured, artistic hell;
And while we're ******* at it,
Up your **** to Morrissey as well;
Up your **** to Robert Smith;
Up your **** to Albert Camus;
All those "I'm suffering for my arty" types,
Jimbo, I blame them all on you.
Anyone who handles life's pain
With a token of mature self examination -
It's time they told these pounces to stick it
Up their bogus self infatuation:
And if you think I'll stop at this,
The answer is, no way, never -
If you think Jim Morrison was a ******,
Well, Christ - I can rave on like this forever.

The idea I got from the Sugarman and Densmore books is not that JM suffered for his art, but that he got drunk and others suffered for his art. Very much a love/hate thing.

No, it's Ships With Sails. It's a catchy simple tune that isn't like anything you would expect from the Doors. I was thinking Fleetwood Mac, it was 1971, Albatross was still getting airplay. Live versions often exceeded 10 minutes of Hammond and guitar jamming.
The local Miami rock station started playing it once every few hours without saying anything. I liked it and after a few weeks called the radio station to find out who it was and got the surprise, I bought the album. The radio guy said that he was told not to say who it was.
Miami was a very conservative town full of retirees in the 60's and early 70's. The Miami Herald newspaper made Jim Morrison out to be Charles Manson's protégé, and routinely badmouthed most rock musicians.
When CSN&Y released Ohio, the Herald branded them all Communist conspirators and both Miami rock stations refused to play the song for fear of advertiser retaliation. I was on a 10,000 mile road trip when that song came out, and it was in heavy rotation on every radio station in the country, except south Florida.

I think it's more the later. I liked the Doors music, and thought Jim was cool. That concert allowed me to see what an A$$hole he was. Ditto Janis Joplin. I saw her at a free concert, and she did pretty much the same thing. Extremely drunk on stage, cussing out the audience, especially the people in the front who wanted to hear Bobby McGee. She finally screamed at them how much she hated that F'in song, told them to sing it themselves, threw the mic at them, and stormed off stage, never to return. Both were soon to become charter members of the "27 club", along with another of my music idols, Jimi.
As with many of my friends, and countless other teenagers, I wanted to be a rock star. These and other events that I encountered in the 1969 to 1972 time frame cured us of those dreams. I decided to get a real job at the Motorola plant in 1972, and just "retired" last year.
Hey, I made it past 27. I had friends that DID become rock stars. Their first singer didn't make it to 27, and the second made it to her 50's I think. They were screwed over by their record company, who wanted her to take the place of Janis, and the rest of the band was discarded.

not always for the better. All they seem to sing about in modern pop songs is f*#&ing and shaking your goodies for the purposes of attracting a partner to f*#& !!!

IMO Neurologists definetly see themselves as being at the top of the food chain as surgeons go.

I still don't know what was really going on in Jacksons head! Though I still think "Don't stop 'Til you get enough" and most of the songs on Thriller are pretty good. I can see though how knowledge of his dirty laundry could spoil your appreciation of his music.

Great art should be viewed from a certain distanceI think it's more the later. I liked the Doors music, and thought Jim was cool. That concert allowed me to see what an A$$hole he was. almost all musical artists that I have admired for their recordings, I have been let down considerably after getting to know the nitty gritty personal details. It's well known, instantly found "celebrity status" can wreck a persons psyche who isn't ready for it, throw drugs/ alcohol abuse into that mix and it's a disaster waiting to happen! IMO public relations and career managers / lawyers required if your support system isn't up for it . The '27 club' are the proof of those casualties, if you look even closer there are so many other crash and burn stories. IDK is there a rule that just because they have great art they should also be role models for our children too?
It's the media that feeds on these 'car crash scenarios' they build them up only to tear them down again!
You guys are sounding like a bunch of ignorant people. Extra sensitivity brings extra pain which brings foul humor which brings disaster. You want the songs but you don't want to see what's behind. In most cases a man in a sorrowful state. Pretty much ****** up. Haha. Just like me.
exactly! my point is focus on the music, not the wreckage / behind it.but you don't want to see what's behind. In most cases a man in a sorrowful state.
Remember all the ex Beatles fans giving away their records when John Lennon was paraphrased " they were bigger than Jesus" in the headlines! eg The media caused that whole train crash. same deal with Jim Morrison.
