USSA-5 PCB GB

I have a few questions, if I may:

1. I see that most here have built the amps dual mono, with individual power supplies for each channel. I was planning on building a single SLB, with the option of adding another one if needed. What would be an appropriate transformer rating for a single one, if for dual it is 250-300VA?

2. For Q1-Q4 (BC547/BC557) the recommendation is C series, while B is also sufficient. There are many variations within those series, for example BC547B, B547BBU, BC547BTA... Will any of them do, or does it have to be BC547B specifically? Can the 557/547 be from different series?

3. What is the cooling capability requirement, as in how much heatsink is needed in order to not have overheating problems (in Nordic climate)? Would this be sufficient, presuming there is enough real estate to install everything inside? https://modushop.biz/site/index.php?route=product/product&path=322&product_id=860

Hi
1) if you do not want to go dual mono then pay attention to possible ground loop…. Single transfo would be close to double size of dual….but of course it depends on your need and performance requirement.…400VA would probably give excellent performance.

2) only the first letter refers to HFE grade range. They have to be of the same grade and reasonably matched as per the manual instructions. Extra letters suffix after HFE grade is only for other manufacturing parameters not relevant for the amplifier. 546/556 are needed for higher PSU voltage (turbo version).

3) the one you have selected have heatsinks that will be more than ok for at least 1.5 A bias, which is a lot. The one in the manual is biased at 1.2A to get the indicated characteristics with lower heatsink (3U). However, I use 430mm length to have more space. If you have a single PSU or a dual on top of each other then you should have enough space but will be crowded a bit…

Hi.

Before ordering parts for building USSA 5.2 version, I would like clarify following things:

Due higher PSU voltage (+-42Vdc), following components must be changed for this version:

a) Input transistors (Q1 - Q4) 547 -> 546 and 557 -> 556

b) Some resistor changes as mention already in chart

c) M3, M4 mosfets replaced as recommended in chart

d) Voltage rating of C5, C6 should increase from 35V to 50V. Any other capacitor voltage changes due higher voltage?

e) How much bias (min/max) is recommended with this +-42 Vdc version? Any recommendation for heatsink K/W rating?

f) USSA 5.2 version should put out around 80W / 8 ohms....what power should we expect on 4 ohms?

g) Transfomer rating...probably 300VA per channel is enough for this vesion?

Fab, can you please check the following indents if they are correct?

thx

Hi Supernet and Vunce
I have included the schematics of the version 5.2 Twin Turbo (2* double die thus 4 pairs of output). The Turbo only version is using a single pair of double die mosfet. Also R49 is not installed.
a) yes
b) I will send you the schematics with parts value
c) yes .
d) only C5 and C6
e) minimum 450ma recommended (mine has 550ma), 84VDC* 500ma = 42W to dissipate in heatsink
f) twin turbo is about 80Wrms /8 ohms. About same power for single turbo in 8 ohms. As for 4 ohms, I have not tested my twin turbo. For the same PSU the twin turbo will put out more power into 8 ohms than the single turbo. However, the single turbo still have double die (2 pairs) so should be powerful also on 4 ohms. As for the exact power it depends on your PSU capability. As an estimated guess it should be in the range of 120-130Wrms in 4 ohms….
g) yes it is.

DF of twin turbo is about 70-80 but single turbo should be more about 45-55. More bias, higher DF….
