USSA-5 Build with Review

This amp deserves to be made in mono blocs and my first dual mono build successfully completed today after a wait of almost an year with the cabinet making from a friend.

Very nice implementation manniraj ! I like your power switch🙂 Thank you for posting it has worth the while😉 Keep up posted on your listening impressions. The rest of your system looks also quite nice too. Fab

Thanks Fab, its a nice cute power led switch - 19mm 22mm led metal rotary push button brass latching 2 3 position Switch Press Button rotary 2NO 2NC Rotate button rotation|Switches| - AliExpress

First thing is to replace the small EI cheap core transformer (powering the speaker protection module of 12vac) with a good quality RCORE on the back panel above the iEC socket as this one makes a slight humming noise when I put the ear very close to the cabinet 🙂 But does not effect the sound though. I had kept the amp aside waiting for the mono bloc chassis to arrive and now listening to this with my around 2-3 months old Troels and the combo is just awesome with no words to describe.

The rest of the system being Soekris R-2R / AD1862 dacs + Korg Nutube (LDR controller + Emerald RJM Phonostage) and paired with Raspberry Pi3 as Roon transport / Raspberry pi zero over Volumio - Hifiberry Digipro coaxial to Soekris). Every item is DIY including cables and totally worth and satisfied with the effort over many years now. Thanks again Fab for giving us the best amp and fabulous build guide. I still have another matched pair of 2SK2013/313 for a future amp of yours 😉

manniraj, your amps look great! I personally do not like the high-end Mundorf caps (any cheap MKP will be better), but otherwise you're golden!

Thanks, initially tried with WIMA MKS and then I guess MKP 4.7uf but ended up now using a Mundorf 4.7uf. Wanted to try a Alumina Z cap but expensive to get to India. Any other MKP you would suggest as some of the users have used some vintage ones here and happy but getting any good ones in India is becoming difficult now a days with the COVID and no travel.

Thank you manniraj for the kind words and the power switch info.
You have 95dB Troels speakers but I have 87dB Troels speakers so you should have plenty of decibels with 25Wrms 😉

Oh yes definitely a bit of volume is what makes my Troels to sweat with this amp 🙂

I would definitely want to try different input caps 4.7uf / 3.3uf / 2.2uf just to get the flavour or improve even better. Used WIMA MKS 4.7uf did not like that much and now the Mundorf 4.7uf. Have not given a try with MKP of WIMA though, let me see if I can find it locally either element14 or rsdelivers sites.

The MKP in the bom is not so bad. I have tried this one also not so expensive and found a little improvement:

However, when you compare caps for sound ensure to listen to them for at least 20 hours or more before concluding.😉

Sure Fab, I have tried the Mundorf 4.7uf for more than 40 hrs I guess. Will definitely try this 3.3uf film Polypropylene cap. And also using silver quoted thick cables for speaker out I guess is making a difference in the sound unlike my other amp builds. I used Canare interconnect cables for input side and thick silver/tin plated speaker wire for the output side both for the signal and grounds. Will change to my regular copper 22awg and check the sound signature 🙂

Thanks again.

Wow that will definitely sing manniraj

Output cable .. don't use anything silver

I got very good results with mogami or canare speaker cable ,
Canare takes quite a bit to burn .but very nice for acoustic . Just use pro cables for internal speakers wiring...best saturation and balance .

My friend use that same mundorf ..it's very good for vocal and natural .so it works

Thanks Anthony, yes the Mundorf using since last 6 months or so and now with mono blocs the amp is up and running. Will change the internal output wirings to some pure copper ones (amazon basics is what I have to try it out) instead of the silver/tin plated ones. I use mogami 3103 for my speaker cables with banana plugs since many years now and now even with Troels as well.
