... OB sub bass isn’t advanced audio tech, it’s the biggest hammer you can find…….like a cavemen.
I understand the technical point about modes dominating below 100 Hz or so, but that last sentence (quoted above) is merely name-calling. I've had several OB speakers which extended down to 40 Hz or so in the bass, and they gave me some of the best bass I've ever had. OK, you need more displacement than with other approaches, but why is that a 'hammer'? It's a simpler, more elegant solution, in my book, than many of the other approaches to bass that I read about on the forum regularly (such as using a large, complicated box to try to squeeze 40 Hz bass out of a 4" full range driver).

there was a test of a German HiFi magazine some years ago about stacking a lot of REL sub-woofers from 1 each side to 3 or 4 each side extending the bass response of main speakers that are already good in bass response (they took a pair of very expensive B & W 801 D4 as main speakers) and the outcome was that especially with the chance to manage each woofer in the stack separately the room modes problem is solved much better

i assume that a lot of DIY OB builder that put 3 or 4 SW chassis stacked (one SW chassis alone is far too low displacement of air anyway in OB) each side gain similar advantages against room modes in the bass range 30 - 120 Hz

so far - so good, Stefano

@SBA_SLOB_GUY
I can relate to that. I used to have one REL Storm, replaced by two Rythmiks F12 in DIY sealed box, which was a clear improvement. I then added another two DIY F12, like a distributed bass array, which was another improvement over having 2. Last addition was a MiniDSP 4x10 and implementing Multi Sub Optimizator (software). This allows to implement individual filters for each sub, including delays, to deliver a flat frequency response across the room in the subs range. I don't see myself going back from this approach.

Getting close on a pair of OB's—needing to cut out the bases and attempt to assemble the crossovers. I'm considering a DSP to get them up and running, as this is my first attempt at building something like this. Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread, it's been very helpful!!

Nice PAP build @FastTimes and did you do flush mounting for the Eminence woofers? Seems like when I was following the SBAF thread it was recommended not to flush mount any of the drivers and specifically was told to mount the Eminence woofers from behind and the TB driver from the front as you can see in my build. Not sure how much of an effect this will do but I like the woofers mounted from behind and never heard them flush mounted.

Also curious to know how did you get the angled wings? Any specific dimensions or just an angle to make sure that the speakers do not tilt?

thanks

@manniraj - thanks. I did cut the Eminence baffles to flush mount them (It seems folks have mounted them both ways). I've got additional material to cut new baffles and be able to mount them from behind if needed. I was able to get a CNC file for the legs from another OB builder (similar to the classics). This is my first attempt at something like this, so I knew going in that I would have a learning curve. I'm ready to get them up and running!

Finished some open baffle WAW 2 way loudspeakers. It was a spontaneous effort on a rainy day. I used a full range driver as the tweeter and mid, and a matched woofer for bass and mids. Crossed around 700hz currently. Fairly good output to 80hz or so right now. Sounds pretty good. Lots of issues but something to tinker on over time as a project. Using a Visaton BG20 as the tweeter and mid range overall wideband, and a GRS 8PT-8 woofer as the woofer support down into bass. I did this so that I could minimize cone breakup of the full range driver in its upper frequencies when also producing high excursion for low frequencies. The woofer instead does that and no more big bad cone breakup when it's turned up louder and boosted down low. Currently active crossover via DSP. Will eventually work on a passive, but its a big challenge. I worked a lot of "bad things" into this speaker. It will be my long term tinker project for a while... I worked in a lot of bad things by just winging it and doing a random build basically. Very little planning. So far, it sounds good, surprisingly, but only because active DSP is like a cheat code.
