Ultimate Open Baffle Gallery

Yes. I've been using the midrange nude for a while but I do like it with some baffle.

As it will be triangle shape, the midrange on top would make for a pretty narrow baffle.

For the heil, I'll admit I don't really know much about it's dispersion horizontally, with it's waveguide type shape.

It's always compromises eh?

Final shape was to be like this, but now I'm going to try with the heil on top.

I'm doing each baffle separately, and it doesn't take me much to whip up a new baffle, so I can play with different stuff over time.

Looks a lot better than the assembly on the cart! It also allows to easily try wings behind the 18" without affecting the midbass.

How low do you expect the 18s to reach? FWIW, I run 12" sealed subs (4) below 80Hz and nude 18" as midbass. I tried the 18" with a small baffle, much like yours, and it didn't go low to my liking.

Yeah was designed to allow wings to be added and taken away as desired.

I eq the 18". I'm least sensitive to bass, I often have a buddy come over who's very in tune with bass because I'm not really, and I haven't measured.

The bass is very good quality, very nuanced like I've basically never heard before. How low? If I compare to when I ran a a jlaudio 10"...it doesn't get down there. It definitely gets a solid output at 60hz I would say. I do have a pretty big boost at 20 and slope that boost down until it hits 100.

Unfortunately I'm the worst person to ask because it gets the least attention from me (it's important, but 20hz isn't that important to me).

The Heil radiation is pretty even up to +/- 35 or 40 degrees off axis. Low radiation directly to the sides as you might expect. The in between angles get ragged so a full Spinorama would not be perfect, but I don't really hear those defects so I just ignore them.

Curious how high up you take your 18" midbass? 300 Hz, or ? And what does it hand off to?
The nude 18" run from 80 to 300Hz and hand over B&C 8PE21 on 12" wide baffle, also OB. 300Hz is where the 8PE21 response drops like a rock - I wish it went lower. But is a very good midrange.

I'm not fully satisfied with the midbass from the 18s. It lacks a bit of body but it does have very good definition. I'm building a SLOB section a la XRK971, with 8x 6.5" per side, which is reported to deliver more sense of impact.

Yeah that aligns with what I kind of figured. I think they should be fine in my placement, at least for now. I expect there will be evolution.

I've had Lii W15 bass speakers in my closet for years. I did this OB project with them, I'm very happy with how they sound, especially the bass. I'm using a Flex minidsp and 8 NCore amplifiers.

Hi,

Did you try a 100 hz cut off and reduce the 18" to 15" or 12" ?

So you U framed the 18" and it was okay then ?

This project was inspired by here: www.vcllabs.com. Paul was very friendly and helped me with all the necessary information and especially with all the information related to all the minidsp Flex settings. I can say that of all my OB projects this is the most successful. I simply can't get enough of listening to song after song. I'm happy that I discovered Paul's site.
