Ultimate Open Baffle Gallery

That’s similar to my room, you should be fine. I played with placement, and found I liked about 1.25 m from rear wall. OB’s load the room differently than closed box (with the inherent 90 degree off axis cancellation), and I think you will likely find less absorption and more dispersion enhances.

The Linkwitz site it the best reference I have read. Another good one, if you want to deal with extension of bottom end, is to look at hframe publications by Martin King.

I haven’t personally had much luck with subs supplementing lowest bass, others have.

I’m working on mine now, trying to take a base PureAudioProject trio 15 TB to the next level with various changes, including waveguided tweeter(s)...to improve dispersion vs the 8” fullrange. Studying the work of Joseph Crowe (he has lots of great bids on YouTube, some of which are helpful for OB).

Great! So the absorbing front wall is not an issue and neither is the 1m speaker-to-front wall distance.

The 90 degree off axis cancellation is actually a potential strength for OB (vs other alignments) in my room as both left and right walls are reflective.

What makes a good OB midrange driver? I have B&C 8PE21 to experiment, but I don't see it used in any of the designs in this thread, suggesting it's probably not a good candidate.

Thank you!

An update on my post #2810. I've swapped the Mini-K's out for some Lii Audio Crystal 10's on OB. So I'm all Open Baffle now! Loving the sound out of these paired with the GRS-15's. Planing on building a more permanent, solid wood baffle system with dual 15's on each side soon. I might even work on finishing the basement too. ;) Stay tuned!

Hi Jwjarch,

May I have picture of your speaker from behind.

And what is crossover point. I do have Crystal 10 and try to find a minimal baffle size to get it down to 120Hz.

Thank you.

In a trial winged baffle, 10" NOS Ariel by Scanspeak, highways Revelator, and a beryllium copper tweeter. Out of sight, 4 fifteen inch woofers in U Frames for below 100 hertz.
Passive satellites, actively crossed to woofers group.
Best tweeter I've tried.

Very nice MITSound! Any measurements yet?

@bitinhvi - Here is the back of my baffles. These were very rushed and literally used scraps I had laying around the shop. I have to go back and check the LSim I did but I think the cross happens somewhere around 150hz. I have a 4mH inductor on the GRS15 along with a 10uf cap across the terminals to roll the highs off a little faster. The Crystal 10’s are knocked down a bit with a 15ohm Mills resistor. Sounds very balanced even in my 1,600 square foot open basement. I hope to do some quick measurements one of these days but my time has been stolen by building amps and preamps lately. Just finished a Pearl 2 and B1 Korg. Currently working on Zen Mod and EUVL J2 clones. :D

Here is my Xsim. The "crossover", if you can call it that, is at about 150hz. I didn't put a high pass on the Crystal 10's since they are reported to be able to handle lower frequencies and I think they probably roll off on their own on the baffles I put them in. For now everything seems to blend very well, although I will certainly experiment more in the future; after amp builds, and building a dedicated listening room. ;)

Looks like a fun build.
No measurements on mine.
These are for me, so I'm going to tweak them to suit my ears
I had an accident at work around 5 years ago.
My right ear is still good to 20,000 hertz (down 6db from 10000 hertz. But my left ear is a mess, barely able to hear 12000 hertz, although it's fairly flat to there.

Finally done my latest OB

The drivers: Heil AMT II tweeters, zaph audio 5" mids, peerless sls 12" woofers. Crossed at 200 & 1200 with an active crossover by xkitz.com.
Amps: korg b1 Preamp, pass F5s for mid and highs and a Carver AB class I had around for the lows.
Baffle is rift sawn white oak 1.5" thick ply finished with liming wax and tung oil. I've just cast tinted gfrc bases but they are still curing.
Sounds great! Low end starts to slope around 60 but still very lively and responsive through the whole range. Might play with some low end boost using a balanced equalizer I have.
