TPA3116D2 Amp

Guys, sorry I can't go through all 902 pages (in tapatalk, at least) of this thread, but would like to know if there is a "best one" to buy at the moment. I already have a stock red one and modded blue one and I'm sure there must be better ones out there by now. Or maybe something else in the dirt cheap category, not neccesarily tpa3116? What is the general consensus regarding cheap amps at the moment?

A general consensus in this thread is that the breeze amp is a bit lacking in sound quality. Perhaps you can try lowering the gain to help with noise.

That being said my dual chip 3116 has turn on/off pop and hum when there is no source connected. So I always turn on my preamp/source before I turn on the amp. I turn off the amp first then the source when done. No hum or pop this way.

Perhaps that is the best option! Try it out yourself, cant trust any other ears but yours. If I remember correctly based on talk from other forum members, the tda has deeper bass... but wait for the experts to chime in on this, I am not one. Not to take away from the tpa, others and myself find that it produces solid bass and I think it is transparent. Give it a try!

I meant "fatter" as like ac coupled ss amp or lower damping factor tubeamp, tpa3110 has similar warmer bass less controlled bass, I don't know for fact but to me could all be damping factor, but some say that has no influence at all, then it is something else they all seem to share 🙂

I have just spent last couple of weeks building some class AB amps (Dx and Apex FX-8 is on the way), and then last night was my very first class A amp (Pass ACA). I have been listening to them and switching between them and the Sanwu 3118 PBTL. It's interesting but once adjusted for same SPL, there are still audible differences even though the measured frequency is almost the same. I may do a blind comparison test of different class amps with sound clips in the future.

My first impression of class A is that the bass seems richer more full, highs on the 3118 are more distinct and clear, mids on both about the same. Class AB has probably the best balance of both bass authority and clarity on highs. If I wanted the best mids amp for vocals, I think class D is the way to go. Within class D there is also the self-oscillating IRS2092 with MOSFET driver approach. That one also sounds very close to class AB for bass authority, and overall distortion is probably the best of all the amps. These are just my initial observations.

No sorry have not. They are self oscillating kind of like IRS2092?

Yes ncore is a self osc discrete design. I have used the DIY NC400 modules and they are indeed spectacular. Havent heard expensive Class A/AB amps so cant compare.

But what i have realized is that several factors in speaker design make it the clear weakest link. So these good class D chips combined with DSP means there are exciting times ahead for active loudspeakers

Which IRS2092 board did you try, the LJM?
