But I have a couple boxes from Fostex, and also a couple of their accompanying datasheets that clearly spell FE108EZ, with a western Zee. I also have another set of Fostex prints spelling the "Sigma" as the greek sigma letter.

That is very intersteing. I've not seen that. If that is the case, then i should be ranting at Fostex and owe Madisound a sincere apology.

Hopefully water under the bridge now...

I will take some photos and post the pics and scans of the datasheets, but if you want a sample straight from the horse's mouth...

Title says "Sigma", the name of the drivers is with Zees, and the datasheets have the cyrillic letter. So there are flavors for all tastes :) :)

Notwithstanding the spellings/misspellings, they are fine drivers and if I had the money I would have bought a couple pieces of each one :) .

Very interesting to know of the shorting rings on some of the drivers. That could account for the slight SPL differences for several flavors / dates for the same diameter chassis.

Guess it is time to write Fostex... it will be interesting to see if they respond. BTW it is Greek not Cyrillic... in cyrillic it would be "C" (as in CCCP = SSSR Soviet Socialist Somethiong Republic)

I have 2 pair of FE108eS... one modded to the hilt (still need to EnABL the phase plugs) one stock. One of the next auditions will be the modded drivers in Aiko (best box we've found for these beauties yet)

Soyuz Sovetskikh Sotsialisticheskikh Respublik: literal transaltion (or as close as possible) is 'Union of Soviet Socialist Republics' IIRC -my Russian is extremely rusty. About as rusty as most of the old Soviet Northern Fleet.

I'll look forward to hearing about that. :)

Are they better than the metronomes and frugal horns? What sort of sub would you put with them?

Haven't heard the FE108eS in the Mets... Frugel-Horn needs corners (i don't have any) Aiko doesn't so there is a room dependency. Overall as a rough guess i'd give the 108 an edge in Aiko over 108 in FH, but not over 126 in FH. This of course is all complicated by the fact that FE108eS have been stock so far, and FE126 have had my earlier mods. Both FE126 & FE108 are now entering new territory in terms of performance so all bets are off...

This weekend at the BurningAmp Festival, I got to listen to a bunch (10+) great diy speakers. Lousymusician had brought his metronomes with Hemp Acoustic FR8's, and they were stunning. I was among a number of people who really admired them. I think they won a prize. To me, they were clearly the overall best, most enjoyable speaker there - and there were lots of very good speakers there.

In case anyone is on the lookout for something really good to build, I can't recommend these enough. And for under $300 a pair, that sets the bar pretty high. I wouldn't describe these speakers in terms of dynamics, fr, soundstaging because doing so wouldn't capture their totality. Simply put, what they made had more body, more naturalness, and more musicality than anything else there. I'm going to build my parents a pair, and I bet they never replace them (and I'll always be able to listen to them:devilr: ).

Cheers to all those who worked these speakers up!

Hi everyone, my first post on this forum. Thanks to this thread, this will be my first DIY project. Im one of those who likes to know everything before I start so a few questions....im really new to the field so...my jargon isnt that good btw. My only saving grace is that i have a fairly good ear and a passion for music :)

My original plan was to use the Fe108sigma build because it was the shortest box i could get. But after visiting Planet_10, it looks like they have some nice drivers as well that i can pound out of the standard 4x2 sheet

what do you guys think about putting a Modified FE126e or FE127e or a Creative Sound FR125S in there? What would i have to modify?

We haven't figured a Met for the FR125S yet, but a suspect we could get Scott to run the sim. The FE126 & FE127 are both in the table. My felling is that the 127 is probably a better choice than the 126 (Bipole 127 is high on my list)

As to the choice of CSS or Fostex, that may come down to the amplifier that you are using.

You could try this for the CSS FR125: 48in tall, So = 2in x 1in (WxD), Sl = 8in x 6in (WxD). Zdriver 24in (will probably need a suprabaffle). Vent 2in diameter, 4in long.

I'd stick with the FE127E personally.

If you have the time, can you please run a Metronome sim for this driver? I'm considering using pairs of them in a Metronome bipole configuration with a ribbon tweeter. How do you think it'd do?

Here are the specs:

PHL 1230

Efficiency: 93db 1W/1M

Impedance: 16 ohms

Fs: 45Hz

Re: 12.1 Ohms

Qms: 3.1

Qes: .27

Qts: .25

Cms: 1000

Sd: .0143 square meters

Vas: .030

Xmax: +/- 3.5mm

Here's a link to the data sheet:

Thanks!

And this is the shorter 167 Metronome I was asked about a while ago.

55in tall, So=3in x 2in (WxD), Sl=11in x 8in (WxD), Zdriver 27.5in, vent 3in diameter, 3in long.

Thanks for posting these... I just finished my Metronomes for FE127E and now want to build a set of cabinets for my 167's. I learned a few tricks the first time around. This time I'm going to try to post a log of the build.
