The Eminence Beta CX-10 . What have you done with it lately ?

I've been using the 10cx all morning as a full range and it works pretty well... anyway here's a new try.

I have to say Van Morrison sounds pretty good through the 10cx as a full-range.

I did some more fiddling. I think it's time to get some components.

(btw... I may have a bit too much computational power in use for this design 😱)

I'm closing in on this... I hope 😛

All comments are welcome. Does this look OK?

The first pic is on axis and the second ~30deg off axis

Looks way too bright to me, there is almost 5dB more in treble than around 100Hz. I'd attennuate the tweeter. Is the 200-400Hz -3ish dB and 500-700 +4dB from room? The overall balance from 100 to 1000Hz looks to have a small rise. Only listening will tell, if it bothers you. If it does, tilt that area and adjust tweeter accordingly.

The 200-700hz range is room issues, it's pretty flat in reality. I can attenuate the tweeter a bit more but the impedance drops below 5 ohms and I'm trying to avoid that.

Just had an idea...

Everything looks the same when your graph scale is 210dB.. When you're measuring inside, measure with the driver ~halfway between floor and ceiling, and use time windowing/gating before the first reflection from the floor/ceiling (invalidating your measurement below ~250-1kHz, depending on the distance and the room).

If you go outside, you will only improve things by getting the speaker farther from the ground than it was inside (or burying it for halfspace).

Cool thread. I just used the Beta 10CX in a church install with a little CD, the DNA150. It was just an emergency fill in for the blown Tannoy and it worked incredibly well.

What XO did you use. I'm trying to get the people around here who know XO's to throw me some pointers. Any help is appreciated.

The XO design I have come up with costs 60$us each... I guess that's about normal. I'm just a bit shocked at copper prices lately.

I already had those drivers measured together and in my computer, and I was in an extreme rush to get the Tannoy replaced. I only had about two hours. But I basically used a 4.7uF cap in series with about 4ohm parallel with the tweeter. On the woofer it was 1mH and 16uF second order iirc. That's by memory sorry. I went really simple for time and because I wasn't concerned about dead flat response given these were just an emergency fix type thing. Sorry. That's not very useful, and it's a totally different tweeter, so...

This is my filter for Beta-10CX + APT:50, if you want to try it (from the article Kaiutinrakennusohje Yksisilmäiset veljekset - hifi-PA-kaiuttimet Eminence Beta-8CX, Beta-10CX ja Beta-12CX -koaksiaalielementeistä | AudioVideo.fi). Do notice the tweeter's polarity.

Thank you,

Now I understand why building a passive crossover takes so long... Millions of ways to do it. I'm not going to post any more iterations of the XO until I am done. (I am close though 😀)

I have to say, so far I am not disappointed in the beta 10cx + PSD2013-16 at all. My wife, who never just sits down to listen to music spent four hours listening to her favorite music Saturday night. We have been married 15 years, I have never seen her do this with any of my systems... I'm not sure what to think.

The stereo imaging is extraordinary. She kept describing it as holographic... I know that's the wrong word (holosonic...?) but I understand what she means.

The Beta 12cx is next 😀

If it sounds better than the 10 I may have to stop making speakers as I will have reached nirvana. 😉

edit: I am making these to go with a sub-woofer so anything below 80Hz is unnecessary in my application.

Beta8CX / ASD1001

Hello Folks,
It has been some time since I posted results. Here is my latest passively crossed version. There is a zobel on the woofer, a conjugate on the tweeter to null the fundamental resonance, single attenuating resistor on the tweeter, and first order electrical filter on both the tweeter and woofer.

Beautiful work on your crossover. I get the same reaction to my Beta8CX. The imaging is really spooky sometimes, causing me to jump at unexpected sonic objects. My wife also is a casual listener who really likes the coaxials.

Thanks, What CD are you using?

The imaging was unexpected. I've got them behind an AT screen right now doing L/R duity and I am impressed. Currently waiting for some XO parts to come in. Hopefully I won't need to tweak them much as they are so close to what I want as is.
