The dome midrange thread

I have thought about using a tweeter plus a mid dome in waveguides and mating it with a woofer for a three way, kind of like genelec does it in the 1238A (https://www.genelec.com/1238a) but with rounder shapes all around
and smaller, say a 8 inch woofer or something? And all drivers back loaded since the front baffle would also be rounded in all directions.

I don't know what it would be good for I just think it would look kind of cool... Would this be a stupid idea? I have no clue about anything but am equipped with a 3d printer and some CAD skills and this is the craziest idea i could come up with hehe.

Say using the bliesma alu 3 inch mid and tweeter just for hypothetical nonsensical ponderings? Would the waveguides ruin it or why does Genelec do it that way? Sure they don't use a dome mid and a huge woofer, maybe mating the mid to the huge woofer is the reason they are doing it that way?

my guess is there was no dome that was gonna keep up with the woofer, or dispersion wasn't great with waveguide loaded dome.

what do you think the chances of cloning one of the quested 3way models with dome midrange would be . theres a couple that I'm sure the mid and bass are volt and the tweeter looks like morel and one that looks like it used a the scanspeak dome mid mentioned earlier

exactly why does one person decide what's an exeptable line of conversation for everyone else . its not like I'm talking about politics . speakers fascinate me the dome mids allways have that appeal that probly comes from the first time I saw a scm50 reviewed in hifinews . I think they were around 7k back then . always loved the look of them and I'd like to make something like that myself if I could .

The driver config and box looks eminently clone-able. The active AB amps and DSP eq stuff probably not so much.

Well I've got a couple mc2 amps I'm pretty sure that's what they use . got a software based crossover . it's just if it's worth paying out for a volt middome .I'd love a compact powerfull 3way with middome bought a dynaudio d76 hoping it would be as good as the atc /volt haven't got round to finishing my test box yet

D76 is a very good mid dome, but they age horribly based on the ones I've owned. Dynaudio dome mids utilize a very tight VC gap, which implies that any minute amount of VC sag over time will likely cause the VC to rub or buzz. You'll see this as high odd order HD in the lower mids, especially around the dome's Fs. I had 2 of my 5 brand new D52AF do this to me right out of the box.

nightmare.! so I run a sweep and look for high odd order distortion lower down ? the only thing that might help me is there new old stock so they're been stored dome up . I'll email dynaudio and see if they can do anything to help if they are sagged .

Sorry for the tangent - I'll keep it short!

@PKAudio nice project!
Reading down I see 12mu is your favorite midrange, yet in the next paragraph you state "I bet the foam surround does its job well, so for future projects I will strongly consider using Scan Speak 18M midrange". Would you expect the 18M to be better than 12MU? How/why so?

@jccart Just run a 200 - 400hz sine wave @ ~ 2V and listen for distortion. It should sound clean and pure without any overtones or buzzing (sort of like a square wave).

If you do here anything bad, apply very light pressure on the surround all the way around the dome circumference. If one location makes the buzzing go away or become alot less, you have a shifted and/or tilted VC. There are a few things you can try to get rid of the problem, but many times you're facing a repair, needing to send it to Dynaudio for VC replacement.

They probably can still repair these old domes if the motor is in good shape. I had them repair my two bad D52AFs, but it wasn't cheap.

I hope my NOS D54 are OK.

I bought them several years back after reading that they work well in the 350Hz Edgar horns I had picked up.

I’m only just now moving into a space where I might finally be able to put together a horn system I have wanted to try for years.

I have some conical petal
horns that were a gift as well. They have 3” throats, about 16.5” long and 22” mouths. I’m wondering if there is a good 3” dome I could try with them?

Otherwise I’ll have to find or machine an adapter for a 1” or2” CD.
