Mark why don't you share some music you love, some special artists or performances rather than clips of reverb tails. You know something to really listen to.

The peers didn't do a very good job then. "Truth" seems largely to be a matter of opinion.
The traditional peer review process has its inherently flaws, therefore a lot of people now favour the open review version.
But the main point would be that despite the occasional retractions nobody noticed the flaws and all the people think they were doing scientific work.
Of course some are simply cheating (publishing something based on data that never occured), but the majority is simply still following some rituals and works under pressure.
But, if the studies examining the work would not have been done, what about the science?
As said before, it depends on the field; pure physical or mathematical stuff is more robust but if humans are part of the experiments, it gets way more complicated.
As cdbd mentioned the "blind tests" , these are a perfect example where experiments often look like real science but in fact are not so scientific at all.

Your point becomes the main point? Does it go through a certification process and if so, are peers involved in that? But the main point would be that despite the occasional retractions nobody noticed the flaws and all the people think they were doing scientific work.

Thanks for the link, I have always loved Robin Trower's guitar sound and playing, saw him whenever he came within 100 mi in the 1970's...this is a great live show!
Cheers!

Nurses are well trained and deserve the respect of us all. This does not need to be discussed here any more.
No one is sacred, and that's one reason why this thread is the mess it is. That's a dangerous level of placing any group on a pedestal.
I am not writing this to be political it's to drive a point:
Here in the US we have a massive problem where medical professionals (in pockets) are refusing to take the latest vaccines because they don't trust the safety data versus more "normal" vaccine trials. Heck some of my colleagues at work with Ph.D's are similarly concerned. Now, I can understand why because the kind of trials run this time around are a LOT shorter but with much larger enrollment (30K+ people in the respective RCTs). That's as much to test efficacy (when we have that high of disease burden it's much easier to power these studies) as it was to get a good safety profile. Historically speaking, vaccine adverse outcomes occur in the first 2 months, so we'd be seeing them already (and that's across vaccine modalities, so mRNA's short half-life will fit in). And because people don't understand how trials are powered (or fundamental experimental design), they freak out that it's not the way they're used to.
We as humans suck at statistics, unless we force ourselves not to. Medical professionals, people with __.D somewhere after their name, are not excepted.
Also remember that a lot of people make some enormous logical "liberties" to justify their line of thinking. It's not hard to see that at play right now.
There is a lot of BS being told about the current vacines, frightening people to death.
Simple fact is that getting the Corona virus has a much higher chance as getting some negative impact from the medication.

Yes, scary rare side effects like Bell's palsy, transverse myelitis, and Guillain-Barré syndrome are just as likely, if not more likely to occur after a natural viral infection. This has been known for decades, but some people are immune to fact 😉. I've heard demand for IVIG (also used to treat GBS) is up due to COVID-19.
I think we might want to steer away from the thread's current path, though, lest we invite moderation.

Yep, ironic that Mark, the hall monitor, started the subject that has previously been banned.

I really *really* didn't want to go down that direction (being a restricted topic), just that we have well trained, and (largely) respected folks from all different fields that have huge blind spots in their understanding about things that are near to their professional knowledge (but not actually their professional knowledge). And I say that with the knowledge that when you point a finger, 3 come back at you.
When did he get that promotion? I forgot to congratulate him.Mark, the hall monitor,

Some folks worry about being abducted by aliens. So why is it surprising you can find folks who worry about other things.
Do the flying saucers have good sound systems, like some automotive folks do for their vehicles? Is UFO or something else the preferred name? Anyone here have first hand experience?

I really miss the days when UFOs were the mainstream crazy conspiracy theory. Seems relatively innocuous in comparison.
Dunno if this is quite the same thing ...I am not aware of any peer reviewed published research on that subject.

If you search for "open peer review" you'll find a good introduction to the concept. 😉

Exactly, that's what I meant with "scientists are first of all humans" . Of course sometimes it _is_ better to use heuristics or to rely on the "gut feeling".
