In one of the national newspapers here a few weeks ago, a well regarded columnist said ‘. . . We’ve taken the science too seriously. . . ‘.
I went back at him and reminded him that science is there to inform decision making and cannot allow itself to be corrupted by opinion. If laymen draw the wrong conclusions, it’s not the science that’s wrong, or that must be discarded, it’s the people abusing it.

Care to share some evidence examples?
For example, one line applicable of research: Dysrationalia - Wikipedia

Young medical doctors would be lost without a staff of experienced nurses.

There is some weapons grade **** being put on here today. Even by the standards of some of the usual suspects. Seriously how did we get from Carl Sagan to a tired old stereotype of consultants, esp in the current situation. I would say more but rules...
I subscribed to James Randi's magazine "Skeptic" for a couple years, and quickly discovered that I hated it. Authors screeched and yelled about the perils and indeed the pure evil of religion, but it turned out they themselves were promoting One True Religion of their own, called Skepticism. It came shining through in every issue, so I dropped my subscription when the initial 2 year sign up was over. P.U.

Religion is an easy punch bag, Christopher Hitchens never tired of it, quite a bore really.
Right, my original point was the anti-science movement has gone far beyond the religious issues.
I think the challenge is making science understandable/accessible. I'm reminded of the regular Covid updates the UK government used to give at the start of the first lockdown here. They were accused of not providing enough scientific data and responded by bombarding people with every graph of statistics imaginable. I don't know what the thinking was behind that, if any, it was like, "well, you asked for it". Probably from their point of view it had the desired result.....
What? No one here besides me married to a nurse.
Nurses are well trained professionals in their field and deserve the respect of all!
My wife’s been an ER nurse for 30+ yrs....a few years back she butted heads with a doctor (fully frowned upon) which in turn saved a life.... got accolades for nurse of the year!
As for electronics.......she’s not allowed to touch mine! I even joke with her about how she manages not to push the wrong buttons at work. 😀
I wonder how often that happens. The incompetence of medical professionals has twice almost cost me my life. First time when I was a child and I asked my parents since why they didn't query the diagnosis and they said people didn't in those days, you believed and respected doctors just because they were doctors.
One of my exes was a nurse but she got tired of the bullying culture that exists in the NHS here. She also was not "professional" enough in that she showed care at times in a physical way that is not allowed. She's no angel BTW 😉

I’ve done a lot of custom furniture/cabinet work for quite a few of my wife’s doctor friends....... and to tell you the truth they never struck me as very savvy.
Plus there’s the ‘god complex’ .....maybe not so much now but back aways most were of the opinion they were not to be questioned.

Still some folks around like that, some are even engineers.

My mom was a nurse. She had one kidney and was told not to have me; she did anyway and quit her career to raise me. She knew the difference between AM and FM, was a hypochondriac - had a cup board full of meds as I recall.
30 years ago I attended 12 step programs. I met a woman who seemed remarkably intelligent. I asked her if being that way helps. She told me it makes it worse.
10 years ago I was dating a retired college professor. Somehow we were discussing the social environment of the faculty there and she casually remarked "it's a crazy as it gets". Again, I was seeking whether intelligence has anything to do with...
A remark from John Bradshaw, the family systems theorist "Intelligence cuts no ice when it comes to being able to make a healthy emotional decision".
So if you put "brain smarts" and say, "heart smarts" in a quadrant, you can see the combinations people have. Brain could be off the chart, heart dumb as a post. Or the other way around. Or both... Or neither.

I've been trained in science back in grade school which involved magnet and light bulb. I've also participated in dissecting frog. I should qualify myself as medical science trained, no?Back to the subject, the coursework required for nursing is not without science: Nursing Science, B.S. < University of California Irvine
I see some of chemistry, physiology, anatomy, microbiology, biostatistics, psychology, etc.
Looks like preparation for patient care includes the necessary supporting science classes. In general terms, its not so unlike what engineers are expected to go through, given the types of science engineers are likely to need to know.

What's your excuse?

Agree but Im pretty sure that varies widely from country to country. Nursing here is a 4 year Bsc. With emphasis on the life sciences. And some of them know more than the doctors.
I'd guess the bottom line is, that scientists are first of all humans and behave as such. 🙂
If that isnt the biggest generalization, how do humans behave? Humans can usually control there behavour and thats what scientific training is for. You can learn to minimize your biasis, ever hear of blind listening?
