Bravo Andrea, well done for the speaker !
I have been beginning to work on the power supplies of the clock (A123 LiPoFe4 cell, or R-core with TS7A reg)... even the wire between the reg and the clock board changes the sound (and even when it's short) !
Yep, tweaking is a long process !
Rather than the PS I think thet the quality of the oscillator makes really the difference.
For example, I have compared the Crystek using different PS, but the result was the same, it sounds harsh and aggressive. No way to improve its character. After several comparisons, I believe the crystal has great impact on the oscillator performance. But a good crystal is expensive, more than a complete oscillator from Crystek, that uses cheap crystal.
Your Dac is wow complicated Andrea. welcome to the spaghetti club. LOL
Regs are LM/LT stuff ?
Cheers
Not so complicated, most of the parts are power supplies.
DAC parts:
- I2S receiver (since I2S signals are provided from external source)
- Ian's FIFO buffer with singlo XO board
- TWTMC Driscoll oscillator with SC-Cut crystal and oven
- Ian's I2S to PCM converter (to feed the TDA in OB symultaneous mode)
- Red Baron
- passive I to V converter with Rhopoint resistor
- AIKIDO with 6N23P as gain stage and buffer
PS:
- TWRPS-pp for Ian's stuff
- TWRPS-pp micro for the oscillator
- Salas shunt for the Red Baron
- on-board AIKIDO PS
- all R-core transformer
When I'll find the time, I have in mind a simpler solution:
- ultra low phase noise oscillator
- Slaved source with synchronous clock
- Ryan board directly clocked from the oscillator
- simple solid state I to V converter and buffer (a variation of Broskie I to V)
Stay tuned!

Well Im going the otherway. Not into hi res now.
Final package for me will be the Sd Trans via I2S
direct into AYA all in 1 box. SD trans can be switched
out & AYA still can be use as a standalone dac
Cheers Andrea

I have never told Hi Res, I only play red books in NOS mode.
I would say that the big problem is the jitter generated between the source and the DAC.
I would suggest 2 ways, anyway starting from a very good clock:
- feed directly the Dac and slave the source (synchronous way)
- use a buffer with reclock (asynchronous way)
Otherwise, IMHO, you get jitter.
Sorry Andrea what I meant was a simpler set up.
It's hard to compare notes cause we're using different
Dacs. Jitter has alway been the buzz word. For now
though I've connected via BNC spidf the sound is
really pretty good as compared to my 2 hi end CDP
which I've already place aside.
The Sd Trans in itself after some tweaks is really a
ear opener. I can only speculate that after I connect
via I2S SQ will improve further.
Cheers

You definitely will...a hugh improvement 🙂...not only i2s...it also has pcm output! Just connect them to pins 1 2 3 4 😀For now

Hi CFT
Connecting via PCM now this is something new to me.
How to connect to dac ? Pins 1234 of where pls
Thks

Hi Jaffie,
In your Aya, it seems like you use another buffer after Pedja's output stage (without coupling caps..) What is it if you don't mind? Thanks.

Aaah very observant. It's a Buf 03 in mono mono config
Actually this buffer is to be used in my half completed
hybrid Hypex Oem module.

Thks CFT let me go dig out my Sd trans manual
& study. Is pcm connection better then I2S sq
wise ? Sounds like a more direct approach ya

Absolutely.... 😀

And thats why Pedja is offering a usb to pcm board, and Ian also kindly making those i2s to pcm boards available for us. 🙂
PCM mode is incorporated in ryanj's design as well. 🙂

Sorry CFT im lost is there a need to use Ian's I2S to PCM board
or are you refering to another source rather then the SD Trans ?
Btw what sort of cables is best to connect PCM from Sd trans to
Aya & is it sensitive to lenght ? Yes I've read Pedjas blog on that
but forgot all about it & also wasn't aware of this PCM mode of
connection.
Thanks from for the advice

sorry for the confusion...
Sdtrans has it own pcm output...no need to add any other board...
I suppose short gsgsgsgs?

Thks for the clarification CFT.
I take it that you've not tried
the PCM connection of have you ?
Btw whats gsgsgsgs ?
Thks again CFT

i have not tried the sdtrans on my Model S USB which I will..
My friend has the sdtrans i2s connected to his aya ii at the moment and about to connect it in pcm mode..
gsgsgsgs cable
g is ground
s is signal

Thanks Jaffie.. It looks like the buffer is wired directly to your passive linestage at the moment. Good luck with your projects.
