Sonido fullrange driver thoughts?

I’d love to try a back loaded horn for my SWR250 FC 😉

I wish I was actually able to build some…too many spine problems holding me back right now.

I am re-working some open baffles for use with my Sonido in the new house we moved to last fall.

As an aside, I had an opportunity recently to listen to a pair of Cube Audio Neo F8 v1 speakers that were for sale near me.

They were built into custom cabinets supposedly based on a Cube design (I think it was just a bass reflex) very pretty, very shiny! All white to look sleek and match the new living room.

I figured Christmas is coming!

Disclaimer…I’m a bit of a cheapskate…and these would have set me back about $4K…that’s a difficult pill for me to swallow.

Still, with all my medical problems lately holding me back I was willing to entertain the idea of a really sweet end-game full/wide range speaker I wouldn’t have to tinker with.

Well…I couldn’t do it. The Cubes have so much hype around them, but they’re not for me.

I won’t deny that they had a sweet midrange…even the top end was fairly satisfying. Especially with the sellers high end custom built 300b amp driving them.

I did hear some distortion and resonance in the upper bands with certain string instruments. The big disappointment for me was the bottom end.

There’s no magic formula here. They are like most other 8” fullrange that one struggles with to produce bass.

The only 8” full/wide band speaker I can say that does a reasonable job at producing enough bass for me so far by itself are my modified Fostex 206e in big Kirishima double mouth back horns…otherwise I’m always supplementing full/wide bands with 15” dipole woofers on OB.

I actually brought my system with me that I drive the Kirishima’s with. My modified DCB1 with Jensen iron on the output (a la KISS) and my F2J monoblocks.

The Cubes seemed like baby desktop speakers playing with my system that can normally blow the doors off the hinges with my Kirishimas.

Maybe the problem was all in the Cube BR box design?…I don’t know.

I just wasn’t willing to spend that kind if money for a driver/speaker with a useless box that I was going to have to screw around with to try and get decent sound out of.

The only time the Cubes started to sound a little more balanced was when the seller pulled out a pair of Purefi 200 watt Class D amps and we tried those.

Still, that’s not the route I wanted to go. I already have a selection of amps that I would want the Cubes to work well with…and they just don’t seem like they would.

Anyway…maybe just a bullet dodged? But they sure are pretty 😉

I am very happy that I bought the Sonido. I think they are a great value. At some point I hope to own some more.

tampa, please this is the box for these SONIDO SFR 175/A drivers for you. If you have any questions, write to me : info@sonido.hu

Went ahead and took a “leap of faith” and decided to build the Sonido Tower plan with the SWR096FC drivers. They arrived this week and look to be excellent build quality. Was a bit disappointed the speaker FC power cables and cabinet port tubes were not included in my packages. Contacted Istvan and he immediately offered to send them. Great customer service!

Hi Gentlemen!
So the DIY single driver journey is relatively new to me, (as is this thread ) probably just the last 18 months, with a couple of years thinking 🤔 about it!
In that time, I’ve built eleven different folded MLTQWP boxes, working with the SB Acoustics budget 8 inch “ full range” driver.. ( High Quality Plywood and Machining is free to me)

I’m getting the best sound that I’ve ever heard in my house, ( before that I had Martin Logan Ethos.. sadly I thought that they were good)..
Anyway, being a little Greedy, I’m always interested in improvement!
So about 12 months ago, I learnt about SONIDO… BUT, I live in Australia 🇦🇺, no one here that I’ve come across seems to know anything about them.
So, I was Very happy 😃 to come across this thread!!!

So, for my gear and room, I feel that I may have come to the end of this journey, but it’s been Fun, so I don’t want it to stop!!,

Maybe some of you can help with your greater experience?

So, I have a large room, ( obviously 🙄 each room has its own benefits and Problems with getting the sound to sound Fabulous..) about 5+ metres long , 12 meters wide( the sound comes across the 5 metre way), not ideal, and I have a wooden floor with windows is awkward places!!

Improvements would be more room filling bass… the bass is really good, low and fast, but I’m wondering if going to a SONIDO 250A driver would go a long way to achieving that? Using a slightly larger box?

I’m not clever with Computer programs or crossovers, that’s not my gift. My ears still work ( I’m old!) and my Intuition is on Steroids! 🤣

I know nothing about Field Core drivers, and I didn’t entertain the idea, but Istvan seems to be offering a reasonably affordable option…. In Australia, we are on 240 volts… maybe that’s a problem?

I’d love to hear your constructive Ideas 💡 for which SONIDO driver to choose?

I have included a photo of some of my work..

Thanks in advance!!!
Ps. Sorry 😢 for the long read…

Translam? For that box? Why?

( High Quality Plywood and Machining is free to me)

🤷‍♂️…why not?

I’d kill to have that luxury…nice boxes!

5 X 12 meters is a good size room. I’m not sure what the right solution is for you to get “more bass”.

I’ve had an excellent experience with Fostex 8” drivers in double mouth Kirishimas in our medium/largish bedroom with high ceilings. It is the only system I have with “fullrange” drivers that I don’t feel the need for a sub.

I thought @Scottmoose was interested in the Sonido 096 and talking about designing a cabinet for it?

I took the “easy” way out with my Sonido field coils and went open baffle with 15” AE woofers for bass.

Mass loaded folded Voigt pipe box, because I’m look for more bass, not lower, but more of it.

You want gain then. A Voigt/Horn can do that.

The Voigt shoud be mass loaded, given the way the shape of a Voigt distributes the unwanted harmonics, the extra low pass filter at the terminus helps a lot.

The OB ia indeed a solution, the AE drivers are superb. A decent experimental platform.

But it is an OB.

Greets!

Nice work!

You're welcome!

Based on room dims and with BLH size being a function of lowest tuning desired, so not necessarily this big ........'In for a penny, in for a pound' I say!

Not up to date on Sonido, though if FC drivers is within budget, then by all means as the pioneer's spared no $$ in concluding what was best when it comes to sound reproduction and finish it off with your preferred tube preamp(s) w/variable DF tone controls, tube amp(s) or receiver plus some room damping as required.

Pretty similar, I just popped a midbass in there

Chrome, did you ever see the pm I sent you?

Disclaimer: I am new to speaker building. This is my first build in 30+ years.

Finished my SWR096FC cabinets and I have 3 days of listening. The speakers keep sounding better with hours played. Will need some time to determine the best current setting for the FC drivers as well. Very happy with the SQ. The bass is the best I have heard on my system. The mids and highs are very nice but I have experienced some high fatigue (Resonance?) when vocalist push notes high and loud. Also notice some vocal lip hiss as notes end…oveall these drivers are really nice and improve my system noticeably. Istvan is a pleasure to work with and provides excellent communication and service. I have received some feedback that this Sonido cabinet ML-TL is poorly designed even though it is very similar to Scott’s 2020 plan posted above. For fun I will probably build some test boxes to try these drivers in. Thinking OB with sub support and smaller TL for experimental entertainment. Thank you Sonido!

Hi Steinz!
I love the quantity and the details on your boxes 📦!
I too am surprised that you “ received negative feedback about the Sonido design “ as it looks Very similar to the “ official design “ except for a brace!
Can I ask you a question?
How do you imagine your Oval FC drivers sound compared to an 8 inch driver with a conventional magnet 🧲?
I know that is perhaps 🤔 difficult without “ double blind testing “, but an opinion would be nice as I’m currently driver shopping 🛒 !
Thanks in advance!

JohnnyDee- I can’t comment on 8” drivers. Haven’t used them…these SWR096FC drivers are fantastic with more detail and transparency than I have heard on my system. Dealing with a bit of high fatigue. Turning the FC current setting to 1 helps and hoping break in will help as well. Not a major problem just need to dial the highs in a bit. Bass is outstanding.
