Oh man it's like I had a reoccurring nightmare when I was building the CSX1.

All very true these JFets will not last forever. However unlike the other thread with the Tokin SIT, the Toshibas are well known to be sold as fakes online and to buy enough quantity to have them matched is costly.

Great to see they're still available. Last year while building my CSX1, I learned of the Toshiba JFets (yes I was away building tube amps + a 10+ year absence from hifi), were no longer made. As difficult as it is to just get a hand of the rare Sony VFets, (and we're coming up with new soon to be released Vfet projects), that DIYers are also dealing with these Toshibas.

From the past reading, i'm not sure if the LS Jfets are 'as good' as the Toshibas.

Large qty of jets for the store are in process. In the meantime punkydawgs is an excellent supplier..

Mr. Pass
Super Cool News :) Thanks and best regards

In the past, I tried Toshiba and LIS.
Two little socked soldered to the PCB for quick and easy two transistors brands swap.
Playing with them in an M2 amp buffer.
My conclusion: they are in the same quality range, the differences are subtle.
After desoldering of the socked I keep LSK170/ LSJ74 and they stay permanently

In the power amp and line amp applications, I cannot tell, perceive, nor measure any difference between the LS and Toshiba. They sound fantastic.

I have not yet had the chance to compare in a high-gain, low noise environment such as phono, but as Zen Mod suggests, that may merely require a little bit of sorting/selection.

I would not, nor do I, hesitate at all on using the LS parts as direct equivalents in our projects.

I was wondering if some of the smart folks here could answer a question for me.

In about “X” amount of projects could a 2SK170-BL be a direct replacement for a 2SK170?

Also, for those that it would not be a direct replacement would it usually be just a few component changes needed to get the same results?

Thank you very much, James

Kevin,

Thank you very much for the information.

So if one was to try and use the BL, verification would have to be made that the Idss was within the higher of the GR. Now I have to do some reading up on the Idss as in if it fluctuates at different times etc.

I will look around for the Linear Systems device but are not those also sort of hard to find also?

Again, thank you for your time and help.

exojam,

the times you could buy the genuine toshibas in bags of 200 for a couple of cents each and match them yourself are long over unfortunately.

Your remaining options are either buying from the reliable and known sources as punkydawgs (Ebay) or Spencer here in the forum (don't know if he still offers parts) or buy the in the DIYAudio - shop here:

Also NOS Toshiba parts have been announced to arrive in the store "soon", whatever that means..
