I just picked up a pair of pre-owned 167E's that appear about new but have been used and even been grounded to the frame and have a bit of modeling clay applied to the frame. All modest and appropriate mods in my view. I will be ordering a pair of unfinished phase plugs for the drivers and finish them consistent with the cabinets that they will reside in. But the cabinet. What to do about the cabinet. All this brings out the night owl and roaming these threads is big fun.
It looks like the 3 top contenders are the Hiro, KimChi, and the Fonken floor stander. I found a thread where Dave mentioned that he was hopeful of beta builders of the big Fonken. Having heard none of them it is likely I will go with what would be most interesting. The Zu Audio rep was just in Knoxville to show off the new Essence and it is quite good. It is just a box with a cone stuck in the middle taking up space and modeled on motorcycle muffler tuning numbers. The Tang Band ribbon does "nothing" that I could hear, which is my highest compliment. It is likely doing quite a bit but it is well blended. All in all a nice hack. So this has me leaning towards Fonkens. I just built a Brynn so I got some horn/BVR out of my system. But that cuts both ways and the Hiro has me very intrigued. It is like wooden origami. I will have a Pass F5 up and running soon, my source is all digital these days, and I only listen to good music. If I want to show off the low end I go for the Concerto for Organ, Strings and Timpani in G minor by Poulenc, Something percusive and dynamic, well Bad Relgion, Hot Water Music, is rough and lively. Voice, I love voice and I can listen to Mahler lieder all afternoon. So the idea of hi fi limited to hear violin or chamber piano will not pull its weight in my house. The room itself is 50'x30' with wooden ceilings and floors. Very alive.

Hiro wants FE166, not suited for 167.
When i went over to see Floyd Toole speak, i mostly finished plans for version 1.1 of Fonken167. Refined & controlled is how i would describe it.

For the hard of thinking among us, which one of those speaker designs are you referring to, exactly????
Cheers

Andy,
What driver were we taking about? Brynn, Gabrielle, Venom (replacement for Olivia) are the FE127 Spawn (and soon on woden-design.com, Venom-V)

Gabriel is the double mouth version, also bases on the GR Fonken.

New picture:
Now, with the Q.C. Team doing a picky assessment of the assembly.
It's taking a while since the drivers arrived only this week. Also, as my first 100% hands DIY project I'm still newbie working with wood, but I think it is going ok and hope in 2 weeks have them talking in my room.
thanks
Highef

Stock drivers may need more toe-in than the treated drivers i am used to. Usually just a bit of toe-in to cross behind my head

More pirctures:
Doing the driver bracing:
I used the router to assure good precision
Making the holes
Preparing the chamfer cut. The most fun part.
Perfect, very easy and clean.
After some sanding it looks good. Still needs more sanding and finishing and final part. Probably one more week.
Thanks!

Nice one! Indeed correct use of routers and circular (etc) saws essential for that just right cut. Unless you're Chippendale, forget hand tools really.
Good work, how are you going to finish the wood?
