Hello everybody
I did not made the Cambridge DAC3 clone until now (missing parts and times), but did any one made it and how it goes ?
Thank
Gaetan

Hi
Quite a nice thread.
I've merged the digital CS8412 section of a NOS dac with the CD3 schematic.
Anybody could tell me if my connections and schematics of my two parts are ok and if it would work ?
Here's the schematic images result in two parts.
Thanx
Paul

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Hello
Looking at Paul's schematic.
Since it is without the 7220 in a non-oversampling mode.
Can it work ok and give the correct bit clock shifting result ?
Thank you
Gaetan

...couldn't really keep up with this interesting thread...
I would suggest to go through the "ultimate 1541 DAC" thread,
http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=79452&highlight=
where "the willing" can learn a lot about multiple DACs in various parallel configurations (I wasn't myself "willing enough" until now...)

Hello
The "ultimate 1541 DAC" thread are much more complicate and difficult, I still have problems to understand it, and the DI8 schematic using 8 TDA1541 chips are too difficult for my limited knowledge in digital electronics, especially if I want to use it with only 4 TDA1541 chips.
I find that Cambridge DAC3 schematic much more easyer to use.
Anybody know if it would work correctly, without the 7220, in a non-oversampling mode, and give the correct bit clock shifting result ?
And to Paul Tessier, the schematic that you show are not the CD3 but the DAC3 done by Pilli, and thank a lot for merging the digital CS8412 section of a NOS dac with the DAC3 schematic, that was a great ideas.
Thank a lot and Merry Christmas to all the guys.
Bye

Well, isn't ecdesigns just doing what the CD3 does, only that they have the DACs differential?
I mean, those shift registers "create" 4x oversampling.
Cambridge does this after a digital filter (the SAA7220) also oversampling 4x, so that it results in 16x.
ecdesigns does it "double" because of two sets of DACs in differential... but still 4x "os" (though they don't call it so).
Maybe it's a too naive intuition, but I would expect that the "non-os" setup with four 1541 and no 7220 can work, just it is a 4x oversampling, so may need the timings/shifts to be checked, and some "more filtering" before the output than the Cambridge.
(It's frightening how lazy and approximate my understanding is! Say I do it to stimulate others' thinking...

Hello
Making a test board, how can we see on a scope, if, without the 7220, this schematic do give the correct timings/shifts and bit clock shifting result ?
Thank

Cambridge Audio CD 2
Hello
Does any one know of any mods for Cambridge Audio CD 2 or a link to another thread for this or another DIY website 🙂 Also what is the difference between Cambridge Audio CD 2 and Cambridge Audio CD 3
any help would be much appreciated.

Hi.
Does anyone still have the diagrams for the CD3 (not DAC3) ?
They have vanished from the photohosting site.

Bringing this back to life, as I recently bought a faulty CD3.
The schematics are now available at HiFiEngine.
Mine has a faulty shift register chip - just one, but I will replace all 6. I'll take photos of the bare PCB when I strip the old ones out if there's interest?
Mine has the same 6 chips fitted; SN74LS166N

I have some photos (97) of the DAC3 and CD3M on my website:
Cambridge Audio DAC3 & CD3M
That looks in very nice condition! In the DAC I assume the Mcap output caps, and the additional film caps over the main smoothing caps are aftermarket?
Thanks, Richard
For posterity - here's the shift register board of the CD3 without the chips so anyone who needs to can follow the traces;
Mines now working, and has had a full recap. Just tracing down a new display unit - it flickers mostly.
Once fully functional I need to decide whether to mod it...almost a shame to with such a unique design!
