So you want to 'see' the device, or you want Moode to be aware of music tracks on the HDD?
You can see the device as soon as it's plugged in, or at least I can, when I'm logged in via ssh, but without Moode updating the MPD database, you can't play anything.
if it's just that selecting the 'update' button is too many clicks away, I'm sure you could write a script that is triggered on USB insertion that kicks off a DB update.
I can see it too via ssh, but I want to click 'browse' (after connecting usb stick) -> 'usb' -> 'folder' -> 'play'. I think this would be quite logical without update mpd db button?
This works in runeaudio/volumio/libreELEC or at least worked when I switched to moode player. If you think it's stupid or not needed so be it, I can live without it, just thought it would be useful and convenient. It's the best player for rpi hands down! 🙂

Another script to add would be too much I think, really annoying when new update comes out. I already have mechanical buttons (like cd player), OLED screen and ir remote. 🙂

Problem with the Library
Hi guys,
After trying Volumio (-> Too slow, problems with the NFS mount 😡), RuneAudio (-> Suddenly broke on a reboot 🙁 ) I am now with Moode and are quite pleased so far 🙂
The NFS mount did work, and even did work after the reboot (did not on the 2 other), the mpd library was populated (MPD stats give me 6000 songs; 17 days playtime), and the NAS shows up in the Browse Panel. I can use mpc search to find, add and play songs from the mpc library.
One thing unfortunately does not work:
The moode library (library tab) is empty, except for the one test song that came with Moode; therefore the Library is apparently working, however none of the songs from the NAS can be found in there.
Can you please advise?
Thanks a lot!

EDIT:
I pressed Update MPD Library again; and -
- it works!
Nevermind my post.

Before you hit 'play', select the 'update' function at the USB option in browse.

That's interesting... I use SMB, not NFS shares, but after my NAS entry has been successfully entered and the MPD update begun, amy music appears in the library.
In NAS under 'browse', are your music files listed?
Are you able to play anything by doing a 'play' against a folder in browse?
Dear Zootalaws,
just edited my post - I updated the MPD Library (using the button on the Configure-Pane), and everything turns up now. Great!
One more question: Is there a way to use the "Album Artist" Tag instead of "Artist"?
Thanks!

I've just spent most of the last week - literally - deep into every available playback software/environment for RPi. Just wanted to congratulate you (Tim) on what - right now - is (by a clear few notches) the best solution available.
Doubtless you have plans in the pipeline. Please do continue its development, particularly:
1. Nailing Spotify integration is increasingly important now it's a proper (lossless) Tidal rival.
2. Interface issues. Although the web UI is about as good as it currently gets, MPD app support is thinning out, and it's a shame to invoke LMS et al solely for that. It might be worth teaming up with a dedicated app developer to build a specific moOde interface for iOS and Android. Failing that, it would make a huge difference to improve the Library interface - especially providing the ability to switch between cover art and listing views for album browsing.
Contrasting Sonos' approach to Kodi (which in V.n is still awful) and even Aurender, current RPi apps are still unnecessarily confused re: grouping local and streamed sources. Instead of top-level navigations BROWSE / LIBRARY / PLAYBACK, it would be neater to offer LIBRARY (direct to cover art view with optional list views for albums / artists / songs) / STREAM (Radio, Spotify, Tidal, YouTube etc) / PLAYLISTS (as now, able to combine sources, but relegated to second-tier playback).
One-click playback is crucial, I believe. The legacy of Raspyfi that leaves players reliant on 'playlists' is a shaky foundation: Trendy, not intuitive. Such a shame to see instant playback take a back seat when it transgresses the cardinal rule of UI design: playlists are compiled for special occasions - at all other times, minimal drag between selection and playback is called for. iTunes and the (library-managing) desktop players have this right - ironically! Lightweight player software must be all about smooth interaction. Sonos didn't make their reputation on SQ: it's all about the carefully honed interface.
Aiming to extract the max from the IQAudio DAC+Pro I've ended up with what seems like a peculiar bevy of optimisations. Is there a place to find setup recommendations for specific DACs?
Apologies if any or all of this has been covered in the previous 663 pages . . . but, yeh, great stuff! Ta.

That's great! Sorry, I don't ever use the library function so tagging is something I'm unfamiliar with.
It can't just be me.... 🙁
When I try and add an SMB share, the system just sits there spinning its wheels.
After I make the SMB share change and update, I don't get any confirmation until I reopen a new Moode window.
Looking at 'top', I have multiple php5-fpm iterations running taking about 1.7% CPU each.
I can't access any configuration screens - just sits there spinning, spawning another php5-fpm thread.
If I walk away and come back fifteen minutes later, it's sometimes completed loading the configuration screen, but most often not. Can't do anything until a reboot (have to go via ssh - Moode reboot from the UI never happens).
Pi3, wifi, static IP, IQ Audio Dac+, sox high, time set to Pacific/Auckland, Sandisk ultra 8gb and Sandisk 128gb flash drive.
It seems that this always happens when I am playing around with NAS settings, which invariably error. Deleting the nas entry doesn't seem to work - when I finally get back into configuration, the previous entry is still there with a bid red X.
Dmesg and moode.log show normal boot and operation.
It looks like it's hung up on trying to validate my share.
Other than reflashing the SD, any ideas?

Hi Flyerathome,
There is a method to do this, but you have to edit a file and it has one small restriction.
Looking in /var/www/inc/playerlib.php, function genLibrary($flat)
Change the line
$artist = $flatData['Artist'] ? $flatData['Artist'] : 'Unknown’;
to
$artist = $flatData[‘Album Artist'] ? $flatData[‘Album Artist'] : 'Unknown’;
Change the line
$artist = $flatData['Artist'] ? $flatData['Artist'] : 'Unknown’;
to
$artist = $flatData[‘Album Artist'] ? $flatData[‘Album Artist'] : 'Unknown’;
Also note that if your files are tagged like mine are you need to use "AlbumArtist" not "Album Artist". Just make the line match your tags.
I have done this and it does work. The restriction is that when looking at the Tracks list in the library, you will see the Album Artist for each song, not the song artist.
For example, if you have Album Artists = Various Artists for a compilation CD then the artist for every track for that CD will be Various Artists. The correct artist name will display on the playlist.
Although this is not perfect is really reduces the clutter in the Artists list in the library.
I hope that helps.
Cheers!

Never mind - reflash sorted it
Hey Tim,
How to debug the last.fm scrobbler? Ive confirmed/changed my last.fm password, but still can't seem to contact the server. This is a fresh burn - the last task was to get the scrobbler working but no luck.
I put my Pi in dmz, just in case it was the firewall , but still nada.
Checked logs, but can't find anything about last.fm

Best Settings for my DAC
Hi,
I have been using Moode now for several weeks, and am really pleased with it.
However I feel that whilst the lower frequencies are well defined, the level is a bit low. I am using a first generation Meridian Explorer DAC. I have attached the settings I am using in MPD Config.
Perhaps these are not optimum for my DAC. Can anyone suggest the ideal settings for this DAC?
Thanks, Rob

Can't help with your DAC, but I would try turning Replay Gain off and perhaps trying no resampling.
...how about setting volume control to 'hardware'?
I know the setup guide says 'software'; but I have an I2S device, the iQaudio dac and I find it works better with it set to hardware.

I agree, moode is best hands down, and I've tried most of them too...
I'm happy to pay for the next version! don't know what pricing model you're after Tim, but how about a cup of coffee per release? I'm a father of three; so money is tight! I'm a sucka for updates though and I can always spare a cup of coffee for a friend!
To all; I'd suggest you check out the Tomahawk music player :-
https://www.tomahawk-player.org/
I've long thought this would be a great front end to Moode, looks to be trying to have a lot of the functionality of Roon and it takes in cloud based/online music. Development seems to have stalled; but I reckon it wouldn't take much to redirect the output through mpd.
I've got an iQaudio dac on my Pi2, powered by a 12,000mA battery in a lego case for portable headphone listening.
My 3.1 settings are :-
Kernel - advanced
MPD scheduler - FIFO
Volume control - hardware
Resampling - 32bit/384K
Audio buffer size - 65535 Buffer fill - 30%. Not sure if this is optimal; gives lag when skipping through a track
Crossfeed DSP 700 Hz 4.5 dB
Airplay receiver/metadata - On
Everything else of off, or at its default. Sounds pretty good to me! I can just about pick out differences in the 'chip options -digital interpolation filters' Not sure which is best; I think its music dependent...

Hardware volume control is the way to go, if your DAC supports it.
Ive been playing with Moode now for a couple months and love it. Tim, Id love to volunteer for 3.5 beta testing. Im also up for paying a reasonable amount!
Be there,
I do not have a display
Lorenzo Ferrara will help you 🙂
"@Lorenzo Ferrara Mod burdie • 6 days ago
Hi burdie, thanks for informing us about the problems. I'm going to test the guide using the Pi3, the Raspberry Pi 7" official touchscreen, and the latest Moode, I will keep you updated."
Lorenzo, I have the same issue and look forward to a fix. MoOde works wonderfuly via a browser interface, but the MoOde UI never displays on the Official Raspberry pi 7' Touch Screen. The boot up and shut down messages do appear, but nothing after that.
Regards,
Jack
Hi all,
i have a strange problem with moode and my DAC Schiit Modi 2.
When i try to play RADIO streams, most of them generate only a sort of white noise.
Others are perfect... Never had problems with 44.100 flac and hi res flac.
Someone has the same problem? Thanks a lot.

That's because iq Audio use hardware volume controls in their design. I'm not aware of a USB-connected dac that supports hardware volume.
