Measured vs Specified power ratings of Pass X600.5

Output stage runs on 240V (see type plate) We usually have around 225V here in the laboratory.
I find it very odd that an experienced engineer would not note the difference in actual vs rated operating conditions in the report, since this point is essential for judging the accuracy of the findings. This would not be acceptable where I work, for instance.

It is also a bit suspicious that subsequent bullet points seem to attempt to shift blame for the low power measurements to the amplifier design and manufacturer fudging the numbers.

I wonder if Pass Labs will ever switch to use SMPS for the high-end power amplifiers.
SMPS are not so "mains sensitive" and if designed well they are very good (according to my listening experience).
Maybe it will not be well regarded by the costumers because of "other reasons" that just the sound quality of the amplifier.

He admits performing his measurements starting with 225 Volts on this 240 Vplts amp. He also says a fraction more THD could have a great effect on the total output. Maybe those bullets is enough explanation.
When I'm feeling up to it I'll try to do some measurements myself with a Superior Electric Powerstat, scope, energymeter, multimeter, and all the powerresistors I can find....

My favorite Klipsch saying - "What this country needs is a good 5 watt amplifier."
Yes, one can argue along those lines and live happily ever after. Like me. But we all know that real men push the ACP+ to 0W5 on Tannoy’s and other FR’s and live quite happily, for a little while at least 😎

Factual jokes aside: I know of a guy who did exactly as Paul suggested, which from a Hi Fi Jesus point of view is pure Heresy :rofl;

I like heresy.

It’s a figure of speech meaning that you are ignoring valid explanations why that report results are questionable.
Really nothing personal there.
I can't remember that I ignored any valid explanations that questioned that labreport I provided. To the contrary in post 126 I even admit that two points he made relating to the AC line he used and the fact it's a 240 Volts unit to perform these tests, explains a lot about the lower than specified values he found a sign that I do listen to your posts. I'm familiar with the term 'mind and eyes wide shut' it means that the person that's addressed in this way is ignorant and naive about the thinks that are right in front of him. It's an intellectual disqualification and and when directed to a person it's a personal disqualification. In the course of this thread I refrained from any personal remark even when one poster said I had to work on my social skills.
My advice would be to find a moment of introspection before you post such replies and try to find out what it is that touches you about the things I say.

I’m sorry that you feel offended by used figure of speech and sincerely apologize. There is nothing that ‘touches’ me in your posts. My replies are not emotional.
OTOH, you may notice that most members here are not immediately interpreting all that is said in a negative context. Pass Labs forum section ‘cultivates’ relaxed and joking conversation. There is a distinctive ‘merry gang’ here that makes this forum section my first choice. I understand this approach is not for everyone, but as Papa Nelson repeats patiently “It is not a dialysis”.

Relax and pull out that broomstick out of … Ups, I’ve done it again. My apologies. 😀
