Vikash said:Hi John, thanks for that. Some good material on your site BTW. 😉
edit1: Out of interest, how much did you pay for them on sale over there?
edit2: And how long did you run them in for before you settled on those results?
They've been sitting in my closet for a few weeks, but I think I paid $14 USD for the woofer (about half price) and $10 for the tweeter. (about 2/3 price) I saw the tweeters on sale again this weekend, originally $15.
In all honesty, I would not pay full price for these drivers because there are better products in that price range. The Vifa TC11 and Peerless 811435 for example. Even the MCM 55-1853 compares well and it's only $9. But at half price, these Audax are generally worth it. And they look cool too. 🙂 Maybe that's why Audax is getting out of the DIY business - they can't really compete anymore. Maybe they should start outsourcing to China like everyone else. I think we'll be seeing more sales on Audax stuff in the future.
I ran them about 24hrs at full Xmax, allowing some cool-down time before testing.
There was no significant change in T/S params during the last run-in (completed 50 hours). I've only measured two drivers so far (I've missed the delivery for the other four twice already 🙄 ), but I'm concluding that the Audax specs are a fair bit out. It *may* not make a big difference to box design mind you.
I'm writing up as I go along so you can see the T/S measurements here.

Nice clean website Vikash, well done.
How did the rebuilt TDLs end up sounding, out of curiosity?

Cheers. The reborn TDL's are currently at the sanding stage. Almost ready to start on the crossover, but that requires me to build the mic preamp (which is 1 of 6 things on the DIY audio todo list). So they sound very quiet at the moment 😉.
I've kept a healthy diary of build pics which you may have stumbled upon.

Yeah, found the build pics, that's what reminded me about the project!
Good to see you're spending time on the sanding, it is at least 50% of a decent woodworking result 😉
The results you have all obtained for the AP100s seem so similar that I am wondering if the measurements I made when I used my first set a couple of years ago where wrong. Next time I'm up at my sister's, (who I built them for), I might have to have another go.

Tweeter help please
Guys,
I seem to be struggling to obtain the Audax tweeter to go with this project.
I am a little reluctant to spend £60 (Ish) on tweeters ( peerless 811830? Vifa d27 tg 45 ? ), unless you can convince me the woofers are worth it 😉 maplin seem to have sold out and are not getting in.
IPL acoustics would like too much money from me for the priveledge of having them, very close in cost of better drivers.....
Any ideas??

Not the best shape for results. Careful construction is required
to spread cabinet resonances, and careful placement of the
driver is required for a smooth difraction baffle step response.
Not saying don't do it, just some care is needed.
🙂 sreten.
Yes, I will get resonances. Im still in sub design mode. My sub is a cube as the resonances are at too high a frequency to matter.
A re-think will be needed before construction.
Re: Tweeter help please
I'd stay away from the 811830 and 811815. These tweeters measure pretty bad (nowhere near the published curve) and are hard to get under control without a super steep filter. In fact, I'd stay away from all Peerless tweeters except the 811435. (I'm not really a Peerless fan) I've got a pair of 811815 in my closet right now, which I'll never use.
The 811435 however, measures fairly well with a small rise at 12khz that flattens out off axis. This tweeter sounds great, as long as it's crossed over no higher than 3500hz 2nd order electrical or 2500hz 4th order electrical. IMHO, the 811435 sounds better than the TM025F1. I suspect it has lower distortion and energy storage. I'm not sure of the 811435's price in the UK, but it's $16 USD over here.

I suspect that it's because you asked a nice sweet kinda obvious-answer question 😉 If a tweeter was not sealed back, how long do you think it would last with the pressures inside the box from the bass drive unit pounding against it?
Zaph, (or others)
Stepping away from Peerless, ( i only chose them as wilmslow audio have them and they suited my budget, they also appeared on a the LSPD (?) website)
any tweeters you think would compliment the woofers in this project, say upto $20 a piece (we seem to pay about the same in £'s a s you do $'s 😱 )

I though they were, but I wanted to check.
Well, I went to get the rest of my drivers today (and managed to find a pair of the TM025F1's in the shop too), so I fugured I would pop them in a cardboard box I had (exactly the same width on the front as the boxes would like to make) to how they might look in the end. Luckily, the box is almost the same volume as the cabinets I intend on making too (about 13L), so if I can get my hands on some crossover parts next week, I should be able to wire one up and have a bit of a listen (if they work, as I've never built a speaker before).
The speakers in the box that I had (two of the AP100Z0's and one TM025F1).

hey bigparsnip nice cabinet finish 😉 can you run your processes past us............
hmmmm i have found a maplin which has ( i hope) got the tweeters in stock, the last one i drove too had the tm025MO in stock but not the F1's arrrrgh.......Oh are they different was the response, won't these do. (it is now that i find out from some of you guys they are actually better i expect
i really am thinking of biting the bullet and opting for a more expensive tweeter, i seem to spending way too much in fuel trying to get the audax ones......

I'm not too sure on the specs of the M0 variants, but almost all of tthe TM025 series are kind of similar from what I have seen. In fact, I will probably end up using the TM025F3 or F5 in this design, as they are nominaly 4 ohm rather than 8 and should match up better with the two parallel six ohm drivers. That will leave me the F1's to put into a smaller box (possibly sealed, I haven't decided on that one yet) with the other two AP100Z0 that I have still.
Either way, it looks like I should end up with either a spare pair of the F3 or F5 tweeters which, if people are still looking when I have decided which to use should be able to make a home in someone elses design.
Edit: I did actualy cover the whole front of the box in clear parcel tape when I was cutting it out to help keep things together, which kind of gives the front a nice shine to it if that's what you mean 😀

Exactly, sorry if I offended
Good evening chaps, folks, and loveable rogues,
Update on my missing 8 drivers: reply to my e-mail arrived today, about 1 week after me complaining (I should have phoned).
They want the light fitting things back, I was kinda hoping I could keep those as a sort of compensation for their mistake, but they actually expect them back, *before* they give me my correct order... what is the world coming to eh? Screwfix wouldn't do this to a customer!
😎
Looking forward to mucking around with them.
bigparsnip - great prototype!! 😉
