Hi Carlos, yes its pretty amazing isn't.destroyer X said:My dear friend.... something strange with your words... letters are in wrong position..when we have the first and last letter correct, our brain can understand... as you are keeping the first and last words(letters) correct we can understand your code.

What I meant by penis envy was "who could **** higher up the wall"? I guess that isn't much clearer but I wish everybody a happy new year. I too am just having a bit of fun.
Uops!...no experience with that stuff...ahahahah!
penis and all that stuff is strange to me.... maybe idiomatic expression..but big fat Charlie, a real macho, really has absolutelly no deep interest in those things.
And for sure i will misunderstood composite words, expressions, having that thing on it!.... oh!....not an atractive word, because object refered, to latin language folks....maybe refered to money values, cents, pennies or something alike.
ahahahahah!

Hi Carlos, can you please described the sound ... bass, mids, highs, stage depth/width/height, focus, decay, speed, rhythm, timbre, texture, control, presence, etc
🙂

Have exceeded my spectations into all those things
I would like a little bit more deep bass...more strengh into 10 hertz...because i like the vibrations into the room, belly and furnitures...but this depends to increase input condenser and to increase the feedback gain one too...so.... it is very easy to match my needs just replacing two condensers...and this is very good.
More than that.... to know more....build the one and evaluate by yourself, because each guy is an island of wise things, with different musical tastes and different judgment, and this will be different depending age and culture...musical culture.
Musical experience comes from Brain, or from soul if you want.... brain we have the same...life experience is different.
Has deffects, non perfect things...YES!... all them has those things, no one is perfect, reason why i had spent 48 years of my life assembling amplifiers and could not find the one will make me give up of those things.
When i find some, alike the Dunlap one, when listening for long time, more deeply, i can perceive some negative things too.
If you know the perfect one, PLEASE!... let me know the one.
Carlos
........................................................................................................
Observe that technically speaking.... 10 hertz is not music... you cannot listen..you just can feel with hairs, skin and vibrations..of course some energy enter ears and are transmitted to brain..but the brain understand as "junk" and use not to send this to your conscience....so.... you see how people is different..i want something no one listen..that is technically wrong..waste of energy out from the audio band.
I love the native Australian tube...that sound instrument i have here recorded and i love it...the most famous one....long tube

Hi Carlos,
you are absolutely correct in what you are saying. People can "hear" low frequencies. The growl of an elephant is between 3 and 7 Hz and I assure you when it growls you know about it.
The clever people say that you hear very low frequencies in the junction of you jaw to skull as well as the nose and mouth cavity. Although not part of your ear it is apparently part of the hearing mechanism.
You can try this for real. Pass a signal of less than 10 Hz through your amp. You will hear it as a pressure wave in your head. Do this for long enough and you get the same symptoms as sea sickness.

Hi Carlos, it sounds like you are saying that the amp is not as perfect as you first thought (highlighted above)

Hi Carlos
Forgot about detail re. the above list 🙂
Actually Carlos, you haven't described the sound (character of the music), as you are hearing it, as yet (except the bass).
A few more details would be terrific.
thanks

Yes, throw speakers with sufficient area and xmax and built for ultralow freqency reproduction, you can feel it, it´s awfull, you can`t breathe.
At sea, perhaps thats why whales seek their way up on the beach, when submarin messages are sent.
Based on the number of boards I have shipped so far I would expect to be getting a lot more input on the sound in a couple of weeks. Of course I understand not everyone builds an amp overnight like Carlos so it might be a bit longer. I am also not sure about shipping time to some of these countries.
Now about that bass response. I don't recall the schematic I posted having an input cap OR a cap in the feedback. The feedback is around the VGA only and the output stage should not be in the feedback loop. The only feedback for the output stage is the emitter resistors and the load the amp drives. You could eliminate that feedback also, but I do not believe the sound would be nearly as engaging.
The older surplus boards (the ones I am selling now) do not have the provision for the trim pot in the VGA. If you do not add that pot then you should use the cap in the the feedback ground leg. There is a place on the board for this cap. If you choose to use the cap instead of the trim pot then it should be a non polar type (like used in crossovers) and at least 1000uF. A 16V cap is sufficient as there should never be more than a volt across it.
Another thing that can affect sound quality is the lack of a shielding (such as a metal case) around the circuit.

Hi Steve, is it reasonably easy to place a trim pot where the cap usually goes on the board. 🙂
Sorry Steve, i use to make my modifications, so... amplifiers sometimes looses it's
natural native characteristics.
Those last days i found unballancing current into the output, sending more current into the negative rail compared to the positive rail, and having some off set, the sound was very interesting... also i have made modifications into the input.
In my imagination i found different sound... more near tube alike sound...well...just tweaking to have fun...original will be your own boards using your schematic, exaclty the way it is...but my messy prototype, the horizontal one over the heatsink is something to play with.
I have even included output electrolitic condenser, to listen to it and without it...there are a lot of folks that hates electrolitic condensers into the output ( i had off set..adjusted this way because i felt that interesting)..... and i felt condenser interesting to make bass different, more warm and longer... alike decay misadjusted in audio processor... having forced off set, better to block DC with condenser of course...and i have been playing with that because this is some kind of fun into my mind...in special to check myths alike condenser kill sonics... very special condensers...fat condenser producing fat sound with big body... sound with body, with intensity..ahahahahahh!
No, i will not produce review.... i do not think i have a good room, acoustically treated or perfeclty equalized speakers to produce that.... i think this may be unfair.... will just say it is very good, special sound amplifier, the one to produce satisfaction, pleasant listening... and this is all.
I cannot say it is the amplifier that will let you listen the music God use to play....first because God has no time enougth to spend playing music when people is producing mess in this world all time long.... and secondly because if he decided to play music, for sure will not play to me..why to me?... and third that other amplifiers may deserve to play heaven music too.
In other words dear folks...wanna know?... then go to build... search for Steve..hunt Steve... stay alike hunter around Steve, have boards from Steve.. ask, cry, make noise or stole it from Steve.... and do it by yourself... each one has to leave with their own soul experience.... i can talk all day long...only bláh, bláh, bláh... the sonic experience is individual, is something only yourself can have into your intimate world.
This unballance from positive to negative rails may produce distortions.... and those distortions, depending the ones produced, may be interesting to human ears... distorts nicely when forced to do that.... i cannot tell you too much about Steve Amplifier.... so hardly tweaked and modified to allow me to have more and more fun, that it is not Steve amplifier anymore... it is a messy amplifier based on Dunlap amplifier now a days... it just remembers you Steve amplifier because has that interesting output..but even that one is unballanced as a new experience.
If i decide to write a book about smashed myths..it will be big and heavy... each day i am smashing 2 or 3.
I have forced almost "damages" into Steve amplifier, have misadjusted everything...including the picture to show you the trick things into the output..those condensers are series and paralell (to force oscilations, and i could not do that!)... and the amplifier, even "broken"... "damaged" compared to the real original design still sounds good...maybe different, maybe even better if you like "tube alike" sonics.
Yes... depending how you build this one you gonna have 40 Megahertz... tweak construction and oscilations stops.

Carlos

They seem to be "big mouthes".
See the image and you will undestand what i mean.

The trim pot does not replace the cap. The cap is replaced with a jumper wire. The trim pot would go in the lower current source parallel with the resistor that sets the current. That is R12 in the info I send in the Zip file. Adding the pot should be simple. Tie the wiper to one end of the pot with a short wire then solder the pot to the resistor before it is installed on the board. This way you can leave the pot elevated above the board to make adjustment easier. Be sure to start with the pot at maximum resistance and no load on the output. Adjust for minimum offset. Readjust after a 30 min, warm up with no load and no input. The transistors that are not on the heat sink are run very warm and will reach a stable operating temperature fairly quickly. The offset should not drift after this unless the outputs are very poorly matched and run hot.
It looks like boards are starting to arrive. If you have a question or issue with building, parts substitution or something I may have not given sufficient information about or something I may have gotten wrong, please post that here so the question and answer may benefit all interested parties.
For other things, you may still E-mail me directly.

I rx'ed PCB's today.
Is there a reason the PCB is cut at the output transistor holes? 😕
