John Curl's Blowtorch preamplifier part II

I personally don't see trying to do this in analog anymore.

The SAE 5000 that Dejan mentioned was a line level analog processor. It was to be inserted in the chain past the RIAA preamplifier. So it wouldn’t protect the RIAA pre from any scratch induced slew limiting or overloading, although I have yet to see scratch/dirt signals slew limiting RIAA pre amplifiers.
Mis-tracking may slew limit a preamp. Deep scratches or massive dirt may overload a preamplifier.

Shallow scratches or tiny dirt produce very steep waveforms with low amplitude.
Deep scratches or more massive dirt produce less steep waveforms with high amplitude.
I was looking at a recording (made at the RIAA pre output). A deep scratch signal –4.15dB FS (0.796V) amplitude, rise time 167us. A shallow scratch signal –60dB FS (0.0013V) amplitude , rise time 27us

I think the SAE 5000 was an early example of an analog bucket brigade delay in use

6 opamps/channel for 100us delay
(OK. 10 OpAmps & 13 voltage comparators in total inside this unit)

If it doesnt exist, I still don’t need to keep an old LP of it

We are not valuing the medium (vinyl) Richard. It’s the content.

I find simple open-loop JFET based RIAA circuits more than adequate in terms of THD and noise for the measured performance of vinyl at its best. Their overload characteristics can be made totally benign, and I repeat a clean clip with no delay in recovery is what you want why would you want to reproduce ticks and pops with fidelity?

Note that Scott gives obscure a whole new meaning!

It's too easy, but for something that could be considered serious I couldn't find an HD download of the original Popul Vuh soundtrack from Herzog's "Nosferatu" (the original mix from the movie). Oh I forgot I should toss it along with my Morricone soundtracks since I've listened to them more than three times and should be bored with them. I should be listening to Beatles medleys on traditional Chinese opera instruments (world music).

A good question. I was surprised when I heard (directly) the answer.
Because you notice them less!

I know it's old hat, but it's still a good hat. On a system where the noise is faithfully reproduced, it seems to sit in a space separate from the music. It isn't glued into the music the way we normally hear it. It's a surprising effect, but rather pleasant. It makes it mentally easier to tune out.

I am also talking about the content.... I, as in ME, dont need to keep any archaic LP system just for a few LPs' content which I cant download. As I said, there is plenty of other good music to listen to on other formats. Or record it and throw out the TT etal. Maybe some others feel the same way. But, the electronics issues are somewhat interesting. Mostly, circuit topologies and their details.

Is there any Phono Preamplifier which has both clicks and pop removal (Like SAE 5000) and with low frequency out of phase noise reduction.
Thanks and regards.

Check out 3Beez stuff. They have stuff that connects to your phono pre output, digitizes the music, removes pops/clicks, identifies the track just from the contents, goes online and finds the album tracks, labels, cover, inter-track spaces etc. Builds your catalog, lets you edit details, etc. Once you're in the digital domain, the sky is the limit. Literally.

Thanks Jan. I checked 3Beez here. No mention of instant clicks and pop removal. Will search some more.

With my limited knowledge I am aware of limitations of vinyl medium. I am not nostalgic about the medium. It just happens that most of Indian Classical/Hindi Movie songs do not have digital alternatives. Couple of Albums I have are interesting to compare in both mediums (UB40-labour of love, Dire straits-Brothers in arms). Saving money to buy a good turntable so I can compare and decide which medium of particular album to keep. But Honestly some artist I came to know by buying vinyls only. I dont listen to Western Opera music but I have Joan Sutherland 'Art of prima donna" album which (I guess) BBC said is one of the best mastered recordings. Have listened to it just couple of minutes for fear of damaging it. Waiting for a quality turntable+cartridge 🙂
Regards.
