When I finished my Iron Pre SE, it wouldn't get power where it was needed and I was so confused. I tried for 2-3 hours to figure it out before I reached out to @ItsAllInMyHead to ask for help. He pointed out I had not installed the J1 jumper. Voila, it worked after that.
Can someone compare the sound and capabilities of this preamp vs the BOSOZ and other preamps?
Yup, was installed on my preamp after I took the photos. It's the little things.
Can someone compare the sound and capabilities of this preamp vs the BOSOZ.....
I could, but you could easily color me biased

and other preamps?
that really depends of what actually is "other"
in short and in general - with Iron Pre your money is very cunningly spent; major factor in that is initial idea of Store Crew (with IAIMH's lion contribution) to make it affordable for broadest possible pitchfork wearing masses
I'm trying to creatively combine the two transformers in my balanced build for ease of wiring and was considering using the CL-60 inrush method as described in previous PS posts. Would the CL-60's between the mains and transformers cause any issues in this build?
That's just a clip on ferrite clamp that I had. Filters a bit of RF noise, not much else. Don't worry about it.
I see a brown cube connecting toroidal to extension? wires leading to terminal block. What is that brown cube(called)? just a safe way to connect the group of wires?

The terminal block setup is unclear to me after ... On the 115/120V side of the toroidal, I have four wires (2xblack, 2xred) and understood those should be paired by color (R+R and B+B) and wired to the same colors coming from the power entry module. The picture from 6L6 looks like it shows Red & Black...
Would anyone be able to weigh the parcel containing one IronPre SE kit, please. My courier is charging my for 1.64 lb which I think is unrealistic. The PCB set, actives and two autoformers can't possible weigh that much, or could it?
Inxay, yours is clearly working so I’m not questioning that. I need some help with what I think I see. When I look at the build and pcb images I only see c14 and c18 with their positives facing outward. Looking at yours I think I see c18 negative facing out and c14 positive facing out?
The Iron Pre SE SMD Essentials kit (without additional packaging) weighs in at (around) a svelte 490 grams. The fulfillment center likely adds additional packing for final shipment, but another 260 grams (give or take) seems a tad much for another outer box or bubble mailer.Would anyone be able to weigh the parcel containing one IronPre SE kit, please. I am still building mine so I am also wondering about this. Looking at the silkscreen board at this moment, I see that C13 and C17 with their negative stripe facing outwards. Then I look at C18 negative is also facing out and C14 negative facing IN. It is the only one out sequence you might say. I am really wondering if this isn't a mistake like with the last board version that had C11 facing the wrong way.
I will look closer at the schematic to reassure me.
Thanks again for the observation. I will not power this up until there is a definite answer.
Looking at step 32 of the build guide, there is a schematic that shows the correct electrical connections, but based only on that, I am not confident that it translates to the actual physical orientation of the capacitors. It does seem from looking at the traces that both sets of capacitors are in the correct electrical connection despite their appearance physically. I sure do hope that someone verifies this!

@Ixnay - I see no issues with the orientation of C18 in you photo in #3916. The silkscreen on the boards is correct.
When in doubt, validate against the schematic. The positive side of C18 has a direct connection to R40, which then heads off to the positive rail. I am not sure what may have caused confusion, but if anything can be documented more thoroughly to help others that may be confused, just let me know.
Enjoy!
Edited to add - the build guide does not show the new SMD boards. Remember, the boards and schematic have changed for using the all "same sex" SMD JFETs. Always use the latest schematics / files - helpfully always found in post #1 of this thread. Parts placement added again here for reference. 🙂

I usually just take a wild stab in the dark ZM. After all, look at Columbus. He found a casino in Haiti first time round.

Thanks for that info IAIMH. If the IP Essentails kit weighs 490g, then any packaging will push it over the 500g threshold and then it wouldn't matter if the package is 550g or 850g, I'll pay the same in courier fees.
Thank you for your patience and sorry for the confusion. I was only looking at the build guide in the store and didn’t see the v4 set of docs on page 1.
I see the DIYAudio Store has the Iron Pre kits back in stock ATM.
Would building an Iron Pre SE be a step up or side step to using my FE 2022 as a line level preamp?
