Iron Pre Essentials Kits For The DIYA Store - Register Your Interest

what preamp to use. ..
It's a good question. Maybe best answered by simply trying some different options there to see what you like. SS R.3 is easy to drive (as are most of the amps around here) with that really nice input buffer. I like the autoformer solution and have been a cheerleader plenty of times, but I think you do lose a small amount of ultimate resolution with it's use. It's just a bit softer, smoother, rounder.... choose your words. But the negatives are minimized when driven properly, and the "Iron" in the Iron Pre solution certainly is. My current solution doesn't run the signal through a transformer at all, choosing a diffierent path (at this present time) and careful Lego block selection for some "euphony" but with "relaxed ultra resolution". Voltage gain duties shared by a triode pre and a gain stage w/ local feedback and a bootstrapped VAS, along with the THD Generator of Mr. SissySIT. Wow…missed the boat…. the balanced kit literally disappeared from my cart and went out of stock while I was struggling to remember my store login to check out.

I actually thought these were going on sale at 9PM Eastern Standard Time…glanced through the email too quickly.

I only wandered into the thread and saw everyone posting that they had bought theirs already.

Good luck to those trying to get the completion kit - it looks excellent.

My balanced build has been taking more time than intended due to repair projects on some commercial amps and preamps, parts ordering (many thanks to @6L6 for giving me the rotary switch that was out of stock at the time!), and building a Pearl 3 (again with thanks to Jim for supplying several parts) and an Aleph 30 (thanks to @rhthatcher and 6L6 for lots of helpful guidance, help and recommendations)! I used Randy's excellent boards and matched transistors, as well as the recommended chassis, and it turned out great and sounds incredible.

During lulls in those projects, I completed the power supply and machining of the front panel of a chassis box into which I shoehorned both boards. Not as beautiful as Giancarlo's chassis for this project, but since I had already committed, it made sense to complete the build. Because space is limited, my choice was to use an EIZZ 4-gang attenuator which I'll wire up tonight. At first the intention was to use 4 balanced inputs and 1 SE, but plans changed so this has 4 RCAs and one XLR for inputs, and one XLR and one RCA for outputs.

@mkane77g - I used two AN-0218 transformers in a remote box, also a tight fit to keep the package size down.

Smoke test was today (passed), and hopefully tomorrow I'll have voltages adjusted, everything wired up and tested, and this bad boy in operation.

Many thanks to @Zen Mod for the intriguing design and all who are involved in bringing these kits to us!

color me funny, but what's wrong with personal purchase (anywhere) of necessary parts, not waiting for Store several months?

I mean - it is logical and handy to purchase entire package, when available in Store ........ but waiting that much is illogical. when entire know-how (read - BOM) is already posted and there is always someone present for clarification, if needed
