I'm building a $4000 speaker kit ... Which one?

Ah ok one has to find the watts he is needing in relation to the efficienty of the driver. So we don't care of the 8 W amp of the article as we don't know the driver efficienty, but the real input is one needs the Watts to reach 94 dB where stands at max most of the playbacks spl peaks ?

ah I get it : "
Then we can calculate the required electric power from acoustic power Pa and efficiency of the speakers (Eff):
P = Pa / Eff"

ok, not often we see it as 1%, but it's ok, I can math x85 or x95 🙂

considering 1% typical speaker efficiency is common
here is excerpt from stereophile article:
"Thus, for a 10% efficient speaker, we have: 40 x 1/10W, which works out to 4 watts. For a typical "low-efficiency" speaker of about 1% efficiency, we would need 40 watts of amplifier power to produce 0.4 acoustical watts."

Well, even if we could lower the crossover point (with no ill effects to drivers) - then it becomes about the crossover character. DSP active: no problem, passive though: quite likely a problem.

THEN there is that ability to provide low-level detail, and while there are a few 8" drivers that do this well - most do not.

So whats the deal with 8" drivers? If a 15" is regarded as one best sizes for a midrange....whats the short coming of 8" woofers? In your opinion?

If you use an appropriately sized waveguide, and tweeter/compression driver, in combination with a crossover point to match their directivities you can use any size of midrange without any shortcomings. Providing the drivers are chosen appropriately.

You guys are SOOOOO over my head it is laughable. Want an example?
I've been trying to order the xover parts for the Asathor speakers for 3.5 hrs ... LOST AS HELL still. LOL

Electrolytic or poly caps? Out of stock here ... back ordered here .... not listed here ... Values close but not exact ... etc, etc ... I'll be an alcoholic soon at this rate. And this is supposed to be fun? Jeez

Looks like you have this covered... but these guys have a pretty rich catalog—a lot of stuff that's hard to find stateside at reasonable prices—they ship UPS fast and cheap (IMO)—you can convert the site to non-VAT USD. They can be out of stock on some items—but have always come through eventually for me—they will also suggest replacement values if you ask and send them a drawing:

Hello again. I have a tech question please ...

What happens if you add a second layer to the outside of the side walls of existing speakers, BUT that second layer is either routered with a large 3/4" roundover, OR it has a severe 45 degree angle. Does these options change the BSC, and make the baffle effectively larger in this regard? Screw things up?
Please see photo for the 45 degree example.

I'm actually okay with this, as long as I can get an AMT or ribbon in a waveguide. The only requirements are high efficiency and better than the TPL-150H.

Probably not enough change to make much of a difference for BSC

Hi,
By adding another layer you'll change width so the frequency at which baffle step is located.
But it won't be a big change if the added layer is 'thin'. What is thin? See next.
Eg my ls are 54cm width, bsc occurs around 220hz ( center freq) if 60 cm: 191hz , 45cm : 255hz
( rule of thumb is 115/ width in meter).

True Audio TechTopics: Diffraction Loss

Now diffraction:
Round over are the 'best' solution imho IF they are large enough. What is large enough?
With a 10cm radius ( 4") you'll have smooth behavior down to 1khz. Lower radius makes the freq go higher...

45* angle is another solution yes. Works quite well and if with other angles can be the most transparent answer ( regarding diffraction). Search for Olson's works with different shapes.

But there is more to it as by playing with cutoff freq, using a waveguide,... you can play with this and more or less 'hide' diffraction. There is a gazillion threads about it from member Patrick Bateman, some of them being great imo. The current one at play:

But the real answer to this is infinite baffle. In other words inwall. But hush hush or the 'preference patrol' will try to catch us if we talk about it...

Food for thoughts:

Another great source about diffraction and cabinet can be found on Earl Geddes's white papers and different message here ( need to search by yourself).

Also, you can reuse your woofers when you choose to try out a compression driver on a horn or have guide.

maybe one day youll come across a jbl m2 or similar, to audition...beware, once you hear it...you can't unhear it, once you go home your system, you'll remember... XD

Maybe if the OP orders the JBL M2s without the Crown amps, it will hit $ 4,000 for his budget.
You can also ask for a loan ! 😀😉

Hifijim,
The one it is targeted to will recognize himself ( someone which have difficulties with music other people listen, the fact they can have different opinion than himself, but won't tell you directly, it's better to say this kind of things on other thread...).

And it is not Adason to be clear.

But that's it. Case closed from my side.

Back to IB. I would like to be in a case i could implement it too. By far the best i've heard for my preference.
And it solve backwave issues too.

But if you goes to this kind of solution i don't know if it can be seen as a domestic room anymore? The only one i've seen pictures which is still is Mr Cowan living room.
