Half Chang build

No doubt!
But especially with the 8"-Fostex you have the problem that 10 inch difference between the height of the driver and the height of your ears will cause a lack of sparkling in the sound!
That's why I ask myself if it couldn't be a compromise to mount them a little lower.

It's a bit more than a slot port with an angled deflector mate. 😉

yes, but now the designer gets to make the point :clown:

Anyway, yes, you would loose a bit of gain.

Shifting the driver lower is not going to do it many favours, but it'd be a better option that inverting the cabinet. 😉

Larkin - you indicated that you already have the 207s for this project, so unless you have the option of considering other drivers and an enclosure design more suitable for your particular listening habits, you might well have a choice to make from a range of sub-optimal compromises .

Here's thought - why not build stock and tilt the cabinet forward a few degrees to get the horizontal axis to your liking? It could well be far less than you think.

I love biscuits! 🙂

Really look forward to seeing how yours turns out.

I just finished reading this thread from start to finish and have decided to aim for some HCs rather than needles as my first DIY speaker project (I don't count my LSK M5 bookshelf speakers as DIY since they only took about 30 minutes to assemble!)

Is it necessary to install a phase plug onto the 207's if you use that electronic filter inductor/resistor thingo? Also where can I find detailed instructions for this procedure?

Thanks to everyone for the absolute wealth of info, look forward to contributing a version of my own!

Phase plugs address the problem at the source, a filter attempts to band-aid over the problem.

make sure to look at the pictures. FE207 is one of the easier ones (just be careful round the whizzer)

upgrade?

I've been running the half changs with the Pioneer BOFU for a bit, and while they put out amazing bass they have almost no midrange magic.
They're great party speakers, but I'm not really a party guy.

Is there any mods anyone would suggest?

Would buying a set of 207e's and putting them in capture anything near the magic of my 126's in the fostex BR box?

Because the cabs were routered for the BOFU, I'd have to do superbaffles for the 207e. Is this going to be a problem?

Do you feel like the midrange level is down, or that the midrange is of poor quality?

If the mids are too quiet some puzzlecoat might stiffen things up and transfer high frequency energy out to the cone better. On a smaller driver I found puzzlecoat to increase the HF level, but on a larger cone like the B20 I would expect that effect to be shifted down in frequency (leaving the whizzer alone).

If there are odd resonances going on I'd go to frame treatments and damping the whizzer/cone area - $.98 tweak. Some people know about damar shapes on the driver surface as well, but I'm not one of them.

Things might change some with a bit of room treatment as well...

Of course, I'm pretty much making all this up.
