I used to have a vintage Gates germanium remote mic pre, which is in a small handheld chassis with a VU meter. Transistor is socketed, and I remember it is RCA. I got that for about $100-$200 on Ebay, but it actually sounds pretty good.

I also have a chances to use Chandler Germanium pre, which is really good for electric guitars. My impression with germanium preamps is they are more like in your face, and has flat (not 3D) presentation, which make it good for mono closed mic applications. Good for vocals, too. I wonder how it would sound when germanium is used in 2 channel amp to playback music.

I was trying to find the pictures of Gates pre, but I could not. Instead, I have found the pictures of Westerex germanium preamps, which were used for film mag recorders in 60's. I got them from a post production studio in London, and they say those are used for 2001 Space Odyssey. I just took out the transformers to use for something else, so I don't know how they would sound unfortunately. Transistors are 2G309.
