Hi Folks,
....I´m, Back !!
today i finally startet building the cabinets, i had bought the wood some 6 weeks ago
and this afternoon we did the first cuts on the sheets, if things go well, and we work at this rate, i think we´re done in 3 weeks or so.
o.k. so how do they sound ?

For the 138ES-R? Did that months ago
could you come up with a 5' high version more like the org. spawn iris bvr. i like the angled interior panels and would want a higher driver height. i'm still out on buying the 138es-r mostly because of the foam surround. i like my drivers to last a long like many vintage drivers with textile surrounds. something more like a iris complete with the angled interior panels could tip the scales.

Yep. Middling Q is about right for this sort of load. Not sure about the excursion, but they should be OK for modest SPLs so long as they're not expected to blow the doors of a barn conversion out.

what, no Metallica or AC/DC at 110 dB?, then it ain't worth a peck of coon-cr@p

(worst hill-billy accent ever!)

😀 And there was me reaching for my Iron Maiden CDs...

Re a more complex freebie design for the 138ES-R -probably not. Sorry. Problem is, they do take time & effort to design, and with them being a limited edition unit, very few people would ever require such a cabinet. That's why, when I do a more complex box, they're aimed at the more popular / common drivers. If you're set on a pair of these drivers, and desperately wanted a box like that, you can get me through the FH site & we could see about doing a custom one-off.

thanks i may take you up on that offer but am still undecided because of that foam surround! i'm trying to keep track of madisounds inventory to leave the 138 option open as i'm still trying to find a good alt. cab. for my 166es-r's.
a few of us on my 166es-r/a166 thread are willing to chip in to pay for a optimized blh for the 166es-r based on the austin (or similar), if you're interested in that? perhaps a frugal horn specifically for the 166es-r but with a variation for those with the standard fostex 166 to broaden it's use. i want to keep the weight to a min., and would like to be able to use my 5'x5' sheets of baltic birch ply. independently measured 166es-r t/s parameters and more can be found here; http://www.zaphaudio.com/6.5test/compare.html

I took the plunge with the 138es-r's and must say that I am very, very happy. Still a little work to do on the cabs (the black flared ports need some sanding and repainting - soooo boring, especially when I can be listening to them instead!).

The cabs angle up a little as the drivers are low, but I don't find that to be a problem at all.

Sound fantastic, not heaps of bass but enough and nice and tight. Imaging second to none and really sweet mids. They did take some running in though - reckon there is about 3-400 hours on them by now.

Not too bothered about the power handling as I only have single digit watts to play with 😉

Stole the idea for the back from the Maiko (see the pic) - although less elaborate (i.e. within my wood working skills!)

Still debating whether to build a plinth to site them on but not for a while - enjoying them too much at the moment.

As for the fireguard - yes for child/amp protection, to keep fingers away from glass bottles!

Alas I've had to put a a child gate on the room now until I can put removable grills on the speakers. I found one of the dustcaps pushed in a few months back and had to pull it out with sticky tape 🙁

my 2 cents about the infamous foam-surrounds: the surround is the same make as
in the current sigma-series and i havn´t heard about any issues with the surround on
the sigmas.
and it´s not the normal foam, its more lilke foamed-up rubber or so, with only few
and very small air-bubbles. to me it looks quite durable. i think the reason why Fostex
use foam with these surrounds is because they have the funny tangential edges in them,
and that can´t be made with a cloth-surround.

Ian - how about some cheap car stereo grilles & velcro pads? - i.e. no permanent fixtures required on the enclosure front baffle

Very pretty "little" speakers - I'm sure they sound bigger than they look.

Out of curiosity, what would you figure your completed cost was on this project? Even though the drivers are considerably more expensive than most DIYers are comfortable with, the end results could probably have no trouble embarrassing commercial products priced many times higher.

And that crazy big-a$$ smile you get on your face the first time you play them for the unsuspecting - "you made these?" is absolutely priceless
