FE138ES-R - Dave, your dream came true...

congrats to your purchase !! Hm, did Koji-san really did say it was his last pair ?
well, i guessed earlir that the es-r would run out of stock in the late summer...
and you´re really wanna use such great gear ( the es-r´s + sex-amp) for
"just desktop-PC-Speaker" ?? that´s freakin´hilarious awsome !! i really would
like to know what super-stuff you have on your main system.

Hi Mirko. The EISL page said only one page left and Koji kind of confirmed it. I received them yesterday. They are ugly but the magnet size and weight is impressive! Actually I won't use the system with PC but with FM. I spend considerably more time at my office than somewhere else so I can "justify" a good system.

the foam surround is what put me off to them otherwise i would've already had the f120a.
i'm not happy about the fe138es-r having a foam surround either, especially at it's $$ point but will prob. order a pair anyway against my better judgment. i think they'll work well in my small rooms.
i really would've liked a ~93db textile surround fe126es-r and am glade i snagged the 166es-r when they were released here.

mp9 - Ditto from me, except I don't have the 166ES-R 🙁 The 138ES-R looks nice though; hope the foam surround is suitable for sub-tropical Brisbane. I guess it will be fine if these drivers have been designed for longevity in Japan.

Time to read the rest of this thread to get a feel for what folks have done with this driver... or if it is worth the hastle.

Cheers

More concerning to me at present is the distinct unavailability of the FX120 and F120a. This is not a good thing at all -there have been dark rumours that they were being discontinued...

I can't see Von Schweikert releasing a speaker with the FX120 as the central driver if the production of the driver was to be discontinued.

I'm glad I have my pair of FX120, though I sure would like to try a pair of F120a.

I was speculating on exactly that the last couple days... All the recent chatter has bumped up the numbers of FX120s getting into the field... clients keep scooping up my R&D FX120s before i can get them in a box... and an attempt to get an extra set (beyond the set already on the way) found Madisound sold out. One can only hope that people voting with their dollars will keep them coming (and the F120A (F200A)). Be nice to see the return of the FX200... or maybe we'll see new drivers, that build on these... something like an FX120 (and similarily priced), with a neo magnet for a smaller shadow, a more open basket, the surround from the Sigmas (& the FF85), improvements in the top from what has been learned from the FF85, FE208eSR and FE138eSR, and at least a couple dB more efficiency.

The North American market is a new one for Fostex... what they sell will, we hope, help determine what we see (i'd like to see the FE139eSR that make it to these shores evaporate very quickly-- wish i could afford a set). I also wonder if these are from a 2nd batch, or whether the unusual size kept it from selling out quickly enuff in Japan.

Until someone can complete a Vulcan Mind-meld with the appropriate level of Fostex management, we'll be always be second guessing as to their planned life span of any particular model/series of driver(s).

I'm new here, read this topic again & again and found few owners of this FE138ESR. Would like to ask if this driver is worth to buy cause i'm just addicted to HiFi and now looking for a pair of full range drivers.
Looked at FE167E, or FE166ESR but after listening to FE88ESR as well as after reading this thread, was enticed to this FE138ESR...
Any precious advice to me?
And what type of enclosure you guys are anticipating from Scott?
BR cabinet or BLH?
Heard that BLH is hard to manipulate, is it true & therefore you guys not going for the recommended Swan BLH by Fostex?
Thank you.

Well, the Swan may well sound wonderful, but it's rather a complex build, and for a lot of folks the aesthetics leave a lot to be desired.

(my wife might call it a "fugly duckling" )

The other factor that probably deters a lot of DIYers from experimenting with a Fostex driver costing $459 each, is the manufacturer's reputation for "optimistic" published T/S parameters.

Any serious designer would want to optimize an enclosure to the driver's actual parameters. My first guess would be that like all the previous drivers in the "ESR" series released to the international markets, a "horn" of some description would squeeze the most performance from the driver.

A landed cost of well over $1000 per pair is a hell of an investment.

Over to you Scott?
