Dx Blame ES .... based into the Blameless, i am trying a new amplifier

Violine was to explain Tinitus, the reason why not to make modifications

in the old Dx Amplifier.... he is, or was, a violine builder, a craftsman, an artist..also Gaetan did the same.... reason why i have used the example.... an analogy.... have not worked very well the analogy.

The idea dear Max, is that several guys have built the Dx amplifier...i have made enormous efforts to stop modifications very early in the thread to avoid to offer a mutant amplifier.... because people may feel sad when knowing their amplifier, just assembled, is not the last model anymore...that already exist another more modern version.

Also, to say the evolution, in my amplifier designs (if i can say this way), are applied in new models...producing a much better option, this way people can build more than one model and compare...the other way is the frustration to know the model they have is not anymore the last model.... that new features were applied, and officially you have a downgraded unit because a new model, the upgrade one, already exist.... may be understood that someone was fooled.

- "he said this was good..now this one is not good enougth anymore..he has made another one..and this new one is better than the one i have assembled"

The same way if understand as non sense to dismount a lovely violine to introduce a reinforcement inside the arm, a steel adjustable bar to compensate the string forces applied to the arm that may bent the arm when the time was passing by and the musical instrument becoming old, i tried to say, in the most kind way i could, that is not a good idea to introduce, officially, changes in an amplifier model that several folks have built, that has several years old, released many years ago, finished amplifier, and said as closed to modifications officially.... say.... i would not modify anymore... that others, if want to do by themselves can do it, but do not counting on me to do that.

Also, these diodes, in the supply rails, are not doing a very special job, not in the position they are now a days.... they're just behaving alike series resistances and avoiding condensers to discharge througth the supply.... there are other much more interesting use for diodes that i am not authorized to talk about.

So, dear Max, the introduction or removal of these diodes, in the position they are, will not harm the circuit and will not bring to it a very special benefit, advantage or disadvantage..it is a cosmetic feature, used there because someone have suggested, and i like to introduce some suggestions because people feel good having their suggestions applied to circuits.... Kroto capacitor was the feedback capacitor removed..and that diode was because another guy that suggested..... Kroto capacitor resulted in big benefit..the diode not.

Boys, do not push uncle Charlie to talk about that.... we are bothering Cal Weldon this way...he may punish us or close the thread because of such kind of conversation... understood and considered of topic by him...if he was not kidding with me, he posted the image of a finger saying no...maybe kidding because Variac introduced the discussion.....maybe not... this i have learned about more developed countries..they are very serious and not flexible about rules..... the opposite happens here...we use to make rules flexible and expanded..alike rubber made rules.... they are not made to obbey, but to be broken from time to time....we, brazilians, we like to be absolutelly free...we use to obbey, but from time to time we have the pleasure to give a break on some rules... to produce noisy parties once a year, entering the early morning drinking a lot and playing music loud..when police arrives we reduce the noise.

regards,

Carlos

OK, DX.

You are right.
I was referring that, from time 0 to the finished new product, amp and violin making are comparable processes... 😉 It was meant as a flattering (a "piropo" as we say around here) over you, comparing you with Guarneri del Gesú. 😀

Lets move on:
I ordered some better transistors, recommended above, for the VAS, but now I ask to myself, can we parallel a few BD139 to do the job? Would the increase in input C be detrimental?

Thanks,
M.

Hello Joka22,

the PCB-layout of the boards you are going to receive has Revision 1.4 and has been published by Todd on January 5th.

The schematics that Volker followed to assemble his BlameES and I used for my blue board bases on Revision 1.3,
published on January 3rd in Post 294.

Sorry - I mixed this up as well: schematics and layout having different revisions on the same day.

So: I have one Schematics 1.3 board (the blue one) and one Schematics 1.5 board (the red one).

But whenever I talk about the amazingly beautiful sound of the BlameES I am talking about Schematics 1.3 .

The current Version 1.5 has very great sonics as well.
But in comparison to 1.3 I feel that it lacks some emotion, is no longer "playing for its life".

Hi guys, Oooh! I gotta hit the hay soon - 'been here all night trying to download software and talk to a few other DIYs. Rudi, I don't know whether its ok to talk about PCBs as I am keen to get a couple of rev. 1.3 or 1.4 if you can help. Of course I do whatever etc.
best regards
Ian

You'll have to excuse newbies like me and I was really tired, Rudi. What is this PN or should I go check up some instructions ewlsewhere? Anyway, how is the beautiful Blame ES sounding today? I think I can hear one from here if I face in your direction.
best regards
Ian

I have written you a "Private Message / Private Note", Ian.
Please take a look into your Private Message Box.

Carlos and the moderators don't like if we talk about commercial aspects ("How much does etching of a PCB cost?") in a DIY - thread.

The one (I know) who knows the sonics of the BlameES best, who knows its weaknesses (if any) and strengths, is Volker.

He listens to it every day - while setting up his second (!) BlameES - AMP.

Volker is a very passionate audio-listener and can compare, from his experience - you must know: Volker and I are members of a small
German HiFi community who meet several times a year, we visit HighEnd fairs, we communicate our experiences in a German HiFi Forum...,
and listen to the equipment of the other Forum members: we call this "Stammtisch" - the sonics of the BlameES with the sonics of HighEnd brands.

Volker owns a Pre-AMP (attenuator) and drives big speakers with the BlameES.

I do not own a Pre-AMP yet (I am currently busy building one).

So my BlameES is currently connected to the line-out of my PC's soundcard, playing FLACs and driving small (3 ltrs) DIY - speakers (very well sounding speakers!).

What impressed me most about the BlameES (Schematics 1.3) when I powered it on the 1.st time was the very huge amount
of information I was hearing presented in a very "tender" way - my impression, my ears.

Diana Krall, Eva Cassidy, Katie Melua, Keb Mo, Chris Jones, Alan Taylor, ... some names of interprets I like to listen to.

And it is always a pleasure listening to them with the BlameES.

Volker - on the other hand - likes to listen to loud music, rock, as well, and as he told me his BlameES has what it takes to "kill" most of the other AMPs he ever heard.

So, Ian, build a BlameES yourself. And tell us your impressions when you are done.

Best regards - Rudi_Ratlos

I am glad we agree on that....it kills others...this is reality

I am very proud i have superated my stubborn, my resistance against Blameless... i have assembled several years ago and i found it just awfull!.....something wrong i have made..for sure!

It is copy, a clone of the Doctor Self Blameless..the input is almost the same...i had worse sonics and unstabilities with the VAS feeded by the CCS, reason why i have returned to the bootstrap i love.

The output, is from the Dx amplifier...of if you prefere, from Aksa 55 without the secrets...so... a Frankenstein.... one part from my own amplifiers (Aksa 55 was made before mine...and my main source of inspiration) and the whole input, almost all parts the same. even resistance values, an unshamed and declared copy!..... the 100 ohms resistance was increased to avoid failures...but killed the sonics a little i must confess...the ancient, the first amplifier (the one Volker has) is the best one in sonics..others are almost the same..but loose the "magic"... the defined tones.....

The opposition, the critics, use to say i may love distortions.... maybe they are rigth...in this case, i have found a lot that loves distortions..and this proves, their measurements serves for nothing or almost nothing, as they are representant of numbers..and these numbers are excelent at the Dx Blame ES/ST...this means....there's not distortions they can measure..but they say there are distortions and that i love distortions because they want that....to twist the reality to acomplish their own desires and targets.

Build this amplifier..... please Greg, do it too...it is very special...i guaranteed that i will eat your board if you find one that can beat this one Greg..including your neighboors..the super ballanced, same current, differential platoon.

Man... the superb high technology, crowdy circuit, filled with a lot of CCS, current sinks and so on...the Fokker and the Troyan, cannot polish the Dx Blame ES shoes..... the ones has power...not more than power, huge power...but quality.... compared.... a shame to Troyan and Fokker...absolutelly no chance to be compared... loose...by big distance.... eating the dust of the Dx Blame ES that acelerated turning the whole earth one turn and finally beat the others second time (second lap) and cross the final line in first place.

I had this in my idea in advance to make Troyan and Fokker.... that i would make all i can without succeed to equal the Dx Blame ES performance... and tried and still trying, my best..and i could not... this serves, also, to show you, to prove you, that crowdy, complicated, overcomplicated, too much dense circuits are more for exibitionists, show up guys that to audiophile..because usually, very often, almost always, sounds worse than simple ones.

A friend wil build Symassym.... well...i have worked together Bittner in the early days... i have evaluated the recordings he made together John Mateus (USA)... i know it is a super amplifiers...having very good sonics...heheheheheh.... sorry.... wait their evaluation about after comparison with the Dx Blame ES... Symassym will beat in Bass, will beat in dinamica and will not have the focus and details, worse treble to symassym, and the rich of details of multiple instruments playing without mix one each other will be lost... despite symassym is excelent, in advance i will inform you the future results of their evaluation... so sure i am about that.

Remove you hat in respect of Doctor Douglas Self and Hugh Dean.

I said will eat the board Greg...if you find one to beat the first Dx Blame ES

regards,

Carlos

What i have made?.... a copy...watch the schematic and you will see

all modifications i have made over the blameless design.

A copy... a clone... a brazen, shameless copy!
More than i am able to do...doing more than what i am
Prepared to do... copying!

have you watched the movie (picture)...i am the Bandit.... beat me if you can!

I changed my Lilly-Board back from Version 1.5 to Version 1.3 tonight, a matter of an hour.

Simply count the MICA caps (the yellow ones) on the PCB: 5 in Version 1.3, 4 in Version 1.4 and 3 in Version 5.

But I left the rail resistances at their values of 56 Ohms.
Their affect on the sonics is to prevent the BlameES from clipping too early and stealing some of its power.
So - not to change even contributes to the sonics of the BlameES.

I also left the 1.st VAS - emitter resistance (R16) at its value of 220 Ohms.
I remember the change of this resistance from originally 100 Ohm to 200 Ohm was Carlos' first step to "stabilize" the BlameES.

I will check tomorrow (I will solder another 220 Ohm on top of it) if the value of this resistor has any influence on the sonics.
It has no affect on stable operation as Volker proved in the last 3 month, but to keep Carlos well-disposed ...

Best regards - Rudi_Ratlos
