Did the layout and fabricated the chassis and power supply when I
was 16 years old, finished the amp in college when I was able to
get the correct output transistors:
There was one defective output from the start, then it worked
flawlessly for more than 15 years - needs to be recapped now.
I used nine 3000 uF 100V caps for the pos and negative supplies.
for a total of 27,000 uF on each.
That is a Hafler 500 on top for size comparison.

I ma glad to know Pete...so..you are a brother..started very young alike me
I am glad to know.
My supply does not keep the voltage stable as you know Pete.... for the pulse, during some miliseconds, i really have much more voltage than the specifications, the datasheet limit..but time passing, the voltage drops.
This means, really the transistor can hold more than 80 volts peak to peak from colector to emitter.... they have informed 80 volts as guaranteed voltage..in the reality, the transistor can hold much more....or... these ones i have here, the ones used.... i am lucky and they can work with higher voltage...and i have proved that with the recordings made.
We do not need to use transistors using voltages higher than normal, for sure we should not..but, from time to time..when you have not other one..and knowing your supply will have voltage drop..you can even use..to take some risk.
But keeping supply voltage stable...injecting 1 volts in the input..hehehehehe...it is possible i have it burned..will not try that..for sure...i am very lucky the transistor is holding all that voltage..but it is much better to design thinking the worst case.
My electrolitic condensers...some big ones..the blue ones..are 40 volts...they are working in 55V..another "guaranteed specification"..... they will be saying, in the reality:
- "40 volts is guaranteed..if you want to try more..it is up to you..your problem!"
Of course factory is not constituted by idiots..people there has brain too...so..they produce condensers to 50 volts and rate them to 40...as mains have fluctuation of voltage..variation of voltage and people can install in the voltage limit..the rated voltage..then the mains increase 20 percent..ahahahaha!...pow! paft!... so..to avoid these accidents they under rate their condensers...for safety reasons..or the owner may install in a 40 volts supply..and them an accident may happens...also capacitance...they are 20000uf painted in the blue cap..... i have measured and real thing is 23000uf one of them..and 22000uf the other.
Because if buyers find more capacitance will not complain and will say the condenser is excelent..the opposite will burn the brand image..people will start to say awfull things if specified is higher than measured....but the opposite people accept!
regards,
Carlos

I know that you are going to do as you want but I will just offer the problem that I see here. If you take a look at the data sheet here Figure 4 SOA:
http://www.fairchildsemi.com/ds/BD/BD139.pdf
The flat part of the curve is max current limited, the first downward slope is power limited, the increase in slope is the power rating being reduced due to secondary breakdown at higher voltages. Higher voltage and newer parts have better secondary breakdown characteristics.
The BD139 will take about 120 mA at 50V due to secondary breakdown issues, this assumes a perfect infinite heat sink and an ambient temperature no higher than 25 deg C. De-rate further for increased ambient/working temperature and limited heat sink. The issue is under short circuit conditions where the driver must supply enough base drive to blow the fuse and there is nothing to give across the Vce with a shorted output. Fuses can easily take 500 ms or more to blow, depending on the level of overload. There is also likely to be a problem when driven hard into low impedance loads, but I'd have to do the analysis. I'd take a look at the MJE15030 series. Base stoppers can also help to limit the max current.
Further it is just not worth the risk using parts beyond their ratings when other parts
are available.

Pete..no one of my designs are using BD139 with voltages higher than 35 volts
This one is my home unit....i take the risk to myself.
Do not worry about that Pete...i am not asking forum people to use BD139 with 55 Volts supplies.
Relax...i am doing that since i was young, alike you did..i know what i am doing very well.
More than 5500 amplifiers built..several designed by me.... since 9 years old man...completing 49 years doing that.
I would ask you to stop the comments about the BD139 not to transform this in something much bigger and more important than really is.
I am using, in all my designs, i see you have never watched them, the ones uses more than 42 volts..then i am using 2SC2922 and 2SA1837.
I hope we can give a good end to this kind of conversation.

We already have 15 folks that build or are finishing the Dx Blame ST
Some of them are using the Dx Blame ES and very satisfied..they will not make modifications because they like the ES sound.
More pictures from Hudnes.

This thread, or almost all threads i use to open, are real DIY threads
Here, i use to do all i can to help beginners, not the lazy ones that does not want to read and wants you to repeat hundred of pages of information, in special, for them.
Here we love respect, positive feelings..helping hand, cooperation, fellowship, group relations, cordiality and sharing ideas.
Here, i do not accept people trying to "give one on us"... arrogant people, extremelly idiot folks, around the clock consultants, in special the ones comes to analise your amplifier, when you have not invited them, have not hired them, have not needed them.. people that wants to be under the spot ligth should try a Theater or something alike (theatre?).... may try to go to movie production, to be on the stage...singing, dancing or shaking their bodies with a watermellon around their neck (heheheh)
In this place we want people that produces amplifiers, that assemble, copy, make clones, modify, assemble, dissassemble, use junk parts, find solutions, try something new...real DIYers...people that have produced several amplifiers, designed, or copied or other movement..but people that Do things by themselves!...people that works for this forum, contributes, in a non selfish way, posting pictures, posting schematics, providing follow up..beeing friendly, helpfull, usefull for the forum, for themselves, for the audio communitty.
The ones wants to bother, moved by envy, jellows, angry, hate and other awfull human feelings, please, turn around, go back to your cave and please..stay there counting slowly till 6 billions and one...then go out..have a breath, and back to the cave!
Humble people, that come to learn or to share ideas (not to redesign my amplifiers..wanna be a designer..then open your own thread and work!) are very welcome, in special builders that wants to build Dx Amplifiers, the ones related to the thread... wanna show your own creation?...open your thread and work for that!
Selfish people, that do not teach others..or do that only to give one on you, doing that together criticisms, trying to push you down will not be tollerate and prepare yourself for not good moments.
Moderator have not time (I think) to go reading all posts in all threads..so..they are not unable to understand what is going on in details inside threads, reason why they should let us decide the ones can post or not..the ones are usually annoying...because people use to bother without break the forum rules (they are not stupid)...so the go trying to bother, staying in the threads they're not welcome, and doing things that may be understood as cooperation..when in the reality is another thing...the name cannot be used here.
I am glad they are very few folks..... annoying selfish ones..that usually do not help folks with tender and kind intentions...always trying to prove they are good or better..when they are worse to the forum, because do not help, to do not contribute, and only teach us things, if can give one on you together the information published....i will take care of them.
Unbeliavable selfish and arrogant guys, bothering several folks, beeing unkind and generating complains in several threads, posting criticisms everywhere...negative, dark side people..years long in this forum..posting one amplifier or two... only copies of things already posted..the good ones, these ones they do not show us...if the have something..i think in the reality they have made nothing but bother others and to be unhappy and go trying to spread sulfur and and sadness everywhere..they cannot tollerate others having fun when they cannot be happy.
They may thing management does not know, or do not see what is going on... not only i am keeping them informing, and i hope they track the threads, but also forum users have perceived and are sending me mails with support, and criticising these guys behavior...they are three..the main ones...one is a little bit innocent, clever but retarded emotionally..this one will be with us...everybody knows he has problems...others may leave us in a couple of monthes.... at least i hope.
Enter with kindness..you gonna see you will be welcome.... enter to cooperate with others (not only yourself) and you will see will make good friends.

I will collect some pictures of Dx Blame ST..the modified one, the most stable
pictures made by builders....and i will post in the builders thread...keeping this one for discussions and other things...the other one to take care of builders.
Here we have almost 15 people building..some built stereo and other built a single channel.
I had no complains... even Ekkart, that said the bias was a roller coster, had posted the amplifier is fine..and he is having not Todd Board and have not implemented the last modifications suggested.
I have entered the game suggested to post images, movies and scope details.... was not a good idea..this helped only the ones wants to push the amplifier down..will not scope anything more.
I have found troubles..was my supply..not the amplifiers..they are working fine with standard supplies..that supply have killed the Aksa 55, the DHR turbo, the Dx Amplifier and 5 times destroyed Dx Blame ES and once Dx Blame ST.

Carlos

Man... sorry to say but you have made a big mistake...wrong analisis
I am an old and fat hell pig...my work is dirty....i do not care about how things looks.
But i must thank you very, very much, because you're making justice to my lovely friend, Doctor Todd Johnson, from Canada (taj)..he is the one do lovely things, beautifull artistic views from the board, perfect drawn schematics and excellent silk screen visions or X ray style images.
The man is natural artist... he do this job with his own hands and a very slow and simple (hard to use) software that is not too much different than Paint.... so, each pixel, square, line, is draw by him..nothing automatic..hard work..swetting (if this happens in cold Canada) a lot.
These guys that felt empathy with me..perceived me non interested to sell things...just having the desire to help people and be paid because of people happyness and satisfaction with my amplifiers..then... they decide, not only Todd Johnson but also Nico Daneel (from South Africa), Greg Erskine (from Australia, Dx amplifier first board) and Alexmm from Romênia (Rumania -Bucaresti)
Others helped a lot, as Klaas Veenstra from Holland, a good friend.... Raj from Indonesia (or surroundings) and a couple of other nice friends.
I represent a virtual corporation of good friends, cooperative fellows..they do the pretty things you see...i use to burn my fingers soldering and testing things.
Thanks to Todd Johnson, we have so nice boards and artistic vision from the board.
Thank you to give me the chance to say that to these fellows.
Down this page you have the former Dx Blame amplifier...the ES model...now we have the ST that has some minor modifications, and the new artistic vision is under preparation in Todd"s home.
regards,
Carlos

Dear Carlos,
don't waste your time explaining to non-believers the estimated / trusted operating ranges of a BD139 or BD140 transistor.
Those who are really interested are heartily invited to listen to your BlameES in my home in Hamburg/Germany - to its unbelievable beautiful sound!
I am currently busy "marrying" your BlameES with the most attractive pre-amp I got to know:
a GERMAN DIY - project, featuring the PIC18F4550 µC, BurrBrown's PGA2311 to adjust loudness, AnalogDevices' AD823ANZ OPAmp,
remote-controlled, 2 x 16 chars LCD-display, relais-board for (>) 8 sources, firmware being downloadable by USB, ...
Its price: ridiculously small.
I will keep you informed - and will be listening to your BlameES
!
Best regards - Rudi_Ratlos

Rudi,
Must say very nice board.I have to order the BD139-140 and the BC546-556 do they need to be matched?Rudi, do you have some left for me?

Man!..... the FOKKER.... this one....the new amplifier... will be powerfull....
320 watts will not be impossible.... dinamic power will be huge...even while using 8 ohms you gonna have more than 3dB power peaks.
Circuit will be the same...difference only CCS feeding drivers, alike Electrocompaniet.... this makes the speaker move...the enclosure goes moving because strong bass.... lots of power.... you start with your speaker in front of you, and it may move to the rigth, left or other direction.... have to put stones, or concrete, inside the speaker.
That bass...you know the Thor Hammer?... the earthquake?...deep watter reverberation sounds... subsonic from submarine machine. that deep bass makes you feel scared?.
Finish your Blame...... even without the pré amplifier..... i mean...put it to play..because you will be crazy for this next one.... Volker loves power..imagine he arriving your home with 300 each channel to smash your blame..... power matters too.
The same lovely treble, astounding presence, superior sonics..and having a thunderstorm hidden inside the case... crazy to go out to your speakers!
Fokker is a dutch name... also a famous airplane from the second world war folks...i cannot be responsable by your imagination.... maybe your imagination needs some soap to clean it.
I am selecting and testing the transformer..hehehehehe..playing with it.... goto the fokker thread if you wanna see some videos.
ahahahahaha!

Why i am playing about the stuff dear Rudi...you want the best
You have made the Dx Amplifier..when you noticed it was not the best..then you have built the Dx Blame ES/ST... then you have ordered an excelent pré amplifier...so...you want the best.
Soon, at least i hope, you will have something even better...because more bass, more power, and the same treble...so....more performance..... you know..better because more power, more punch, more power reserve.
You will be watching the pré amplifier already installed in the Dx Blame ES case... will feel pity to remove them to use together the fokker... them will be forced to buy another pré amplifier.
Think about that.... Volker going to your home to smash your toy amplifiers (less power), of course, i am kidding.... he will not do that..good friend he is.
Afraid that i can produce, soon, the fokker II, and your amplifier will be second in line?... do not think may happens..i am much more interested in toys from now on..i want to produce class D, using 555, to be playing with it... about power amplifiers...no one will beat the Dx Blame ES..so..means waste of time to me to produce others..having already something having power (Fokker)...nothing more will be needed and line will be closed for modifications and new models.
Volker will try the Fokker too..for sure... and you can order enclosures, wooden enclosure, together, from the same supplier..this reduces costs.
Can that fokker amplifier result bad?.... everything is possible, or anything is impossible..but i do not believe..becasue i have used the idea in the Precision 2..and amplifier i have not posted, not released for our forum.... it is an Electrocompaniet idea. (CCS different, idea copied but CCS recalculated)... and as you know..they had wonderfull ideas and produced very good amplifiers.... so... the chance to be a lemmon is not so big.
If you do not want/need power..then keep the Dx Blame ES, because sonic advantages will be because more power and more bass only.
I am turning more clever or less stupid..now copying the best ones... Doctor Self, Aksa and Electrocompaniet.
* Aksa secrets, sub circuits, are not employed in my amplifier..only Aksa output style (EF) and the bootstrap... and even bootstrapp is "calibrated" different, also condensers, also values in the emitter follower, also emitter resistances and also the output coil..so..copied the style... the main extructure, the topologie.
Self amplifiers...well..he has published some..these were for us to copy...but when he design other amps, when asked by factories to produce designs..then he do something that remembers me the Symassym..he use a differential style second stage... and VAS has two stages, different ideas he apply when producing for factories...so.... Blame and others...he made for us to copy..the very good ones, the best ones...those he keep to himself to sell to factories.
Fokker, to be released, final one, July the sevententh..my birthday.
regards,
Carlos

Fokker, to be released, final one, July the sevententh..my birthday.
regards,
Carlos

I am currently busy "marrying" your BlameES with the most attractive pre-amp I got to know:
a GERMAN DIY - project, featuring the PIC18F4550 µC, BurrBrown's PGA2311 to adjust loudness, AnalogDevices' AD823ANZ OPAmp,
remote-controlled, 2 x 16 chars LCD-display, relais-board for (>) 8 sources, firmware being downloadable by USB, ...
Very nice work Rudi -
