thanks, running an amp without a SOA protection when there is a possibility of exceeding soa is like running a car without a braking mechanism....
i wished Ostripper reconsider his position re SOA protection..
I think Pete's view was it's pretty much the same cost to just add another output pair as to add the full blown SOA protection. Simple over-current detection can then be used without the rude noises associated with a SOA protection system starting to activate when driven hard. I agree with him there, no need for SOA in home hifi. Pro sound is a different deal though.
without the SOA protection, short the speaker terminals whilst playing music and see what happens.....
my first badger build went up in smoke that way...
i suspect the the owner was so delighted with the music that he ran the amp full throttle even way beyond clipping...
it only took a few seconds to have the magic smoke come out..

With a good over-current protection system the amp will normally just shut off with no damage. I haven't tried this on the Honeybadger but I have on it's big brother, the Slewmaster.

i agree absolutely....
operators of amps have that sure way of destroying amps in a heartbeat...
can you show links please? thanks
Valery (Vzaichenco) designed a protection / control system to start and protect a tube hybrid amp and over the past couple years we've refined it to be much easier to add to any amp. At the first sign of any trouble, over heat, over-current, DC on the output or mains power loss it instantly disconnects the speakers and shuts the power supplies down. We've come up with optional power supplies with quick shut down rails so the supply caps won't continue to discharge through the amp in case of failure too.
