Projector engine

Wow, that projector engine seems really cool, put a nice plexiglass case around it.... 🙂
I couldn't resist the urge and I emailed them too. It didn't occur to me till afterwards that maybe we shouldn't flood there email boxes with our single order requests, we don't even know if they would take orders like that. From the looks of the we site, they are a fairly sizeble company (a joint venture with Viewsonic) If the deal with Viewsonic is anything like the deals Sony makes with its suppliers, there is no way in hell there going to sell outside of Viewsonic, let alone to individual people in the states.
But I can only hope 🙂 Wonder how much those things costs....?

BTW, Hey jjasniew, did you get my email? I'm not sure if I wrote to the right email address. I want to buy some of your stuff you may have left over. My email is mikepri97@aol.com

For those who want a LONG throw OHP...

Check out http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1725801053

It just may be the lens you're looking for (although doesnt come cheap, I see)

I'm willing to sell some panels. My email is joejas@ihpc.net.

I'd like to point out that I got killed (near total loss...) on a couple of them, so, I'll have to price them reasonably (In other words, I'm not takin a beating no mo'!)

I guess the benefit to anyone interested is that you'd have an exclusive opportunity - w/o the hassle of being upstaged at the last minute. I've offered one panel to a member here earlier today, after seein him get stepped all over on something he was interested in on ebay.

Commenting on the nice pictures on e-bay; well, my pictures are nice too! And it's the *camera* and whatever processing it does when it takes the pictures that account for a substantial part of how well the images appear. They do look pretty good for a 1.4M color panel.

gotta run...

Hey guys great news! I got mine up and running. Im using a sharp qa-1150 with a 3m (model 213) overhead projector. When i play dreamcast on it through vga it is spectacular! But when i watch tv, play xbox, or watch dvds (through composite) it is kinda lacking, but still very nice. The main problem with composite is that all the colors look kinda faded, though with vga the colours are bright, vibrant and crisp. Im thinking of buying a vga converter so that everything will be as nice as dreamcast. Here's the one im thinking of getting:

I will post pics soon!

Vga box

bodysuitman,

i use a vga adapter called the aimslab jam. It is cheaper than the one you want on ebay, and IMO it works better (i have used both)try looking for the jam on ebay, you should be able to find it for about $20.

regards,
Aaron (the proud new owner of a sharp qa-1500)

Guess who owns a 7 foot tv

ME OMG it works!! $50 for OHP a bad *** one and $150 for good lcd panel and i got a 7 foot wide screen the screen is just a white king size bed sheet i havent painted it yet im going to try some of this reflective paint and see how it works. the pic of the screen dont do the real thing justice it looks bad *** if you are up a few feet from the screen you can see the pixles.
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

yes thats 7 foot from side to side.

Great info, everybody!

I have a question to those with OHP experience. Is the fresnel stage lens a one-piece item, or is it two fresnel lenses with the flat surfaces opposed? It seems that "sandwiching" the LCD between the two fresnels (if they are separate) could potentially increase the transmitted light because the light would be travelling parallel instead of slightly angled. This improvement might be negligible, especially in the center of the image.

Just an idea.

My attempts at making a DIY reflector have been fairly weak. My latest design is basically a squared version of a round parabolic reflector with the bulb protruding though the center of the reflector in the axis of projection. Unfortunately, the result is a "+" shaped hot spot. So a spherical reflector would be MUCH more efficient (I figured this would be the case, but it was worth a shot 🙂 ). I'm using the metal for making a case, so it won't go to waste.

Got a picture!!

Damn! The night I finish working and finally get something going everyone else seems to have made progress and posted befor me.

Well I got my Viewsonic VG150 LCD Monitor torn apart and got an image (albeit a dim one) through my projector.

I will post a couple pictures and a link to some web pages I built last night (I dont have them uploaded yet) that have about 30-40 pics of my progress as well as brief discriptions of my shot.

I was SOOOOOOO excited to get a picture on a true DIY projector and also VERY excited about posting the link to my pictures and moving forward to a usable projector.

I'll be back as soon as I can.

Great job SuperDave!

I was very excited when I read that someone was attempting to use a VG150 monitor, as this is what I was planning to do, but after my experience with the KDS monitor, I am only willing to do so once I see detailed pictures of the disassembly. So there were no driver board issues? Now I'm motivated. 🙂 I'm looking at a Sharp QA-2500.. But I'm sure the viewsonic has a better picture. I look forward to the pics!

reflector for light

Interesting forum,

The head lights on most motorcycles are assembled like a maglight(the lightbulb, reflector, and glass lens are seperate parts). If you could find a junkyard with motorcycle parts you might have a good reflector.

Also regarding the delta lens-I dont think that it will be easy to reduce a larger image from something like a 15" screen to a 4" image. A lcd outside of the focal lenght of a plano or a diverging lens can reduce the image, but they will form virtual images(will appear smaller and not fliped upside down). Virtual images can not be projected- so i dont think the image will reach the delta and go onward,

Here you go

Alright!!!
I got the web page and images uploaded to my website at school. Stop by and take a look.

A little background....
I bought a ViewSonic VG150 LCD monitor that was used and refurbished for about $250 (I know it was a little pricey but it has a 350:1 contrast ratio and a VERY good response time for high speed video). I also picked up an Elmo projector(sorry I dont recall the model number) for about $35. I plan on eventually building my own case and will add my own lighting and projection lens but I wanted to just get some type of display projected for a test run...
I did get a picture on my wall (it is not a white wall and is darker than you want) but it was pretty light. Some of my pictures from my digital camera barely show the picture...This is due to my crappy camera and you will have to trust that it was a bit brighter than some images show. Also my current projector is only like 700 lumens. I will be using a 7000 lumen mercury vapor bulb in the future and hopefully this will be plenty. The LCD screen does block out a lot of light but I was able to a picture. I was very excited and cant wait to move on with things this weekend. I will probably be taking a few steps at a time an build in phases... next thing will be to rig up a sturdy connection for my LCD screen and circuit board so I dont keep bending my cables (I dont want them to break like it has on others). I will also try changing the lighting system on my projector and try it out befor I tear it apart and use it's internals for my custom case.

I will attach a couple pictures below...of the projector with LCD screen on it and a close up shot or two of my screen.

You guys can feel free to email if you want more info on my VG150 dismantling or ask me on the board for all to hear. My email is dhensley@csun.edu for those who prefer email...Be aware that since I just moved I have no DSL or internet access at home so after 5:00 California time I wont be able to respond until Monday....but I will get back to any questions.

Good luck people and I hope my pictures help.

SuperDave

my projector

Here is a picture of my projector. It is an elmo overhead with my LCD screen on top...you can see the circuit board attached but off to the side...

The LCD is 100% unobstructed. This is great! You do need to be careful but all light can go through the projector. The image looks funny because I am at a bad angle when the picture is taken.
