MuzzMan Rear Projection
Glad to see someone else trying this out.
I had a very excellent picture and very bright even in daylight.
The only problem I had was that in folding the optics the unit was BIG and TALL. I think your approach is correct. I mounted the projector in the front bottom pointing up and to the back to the front surface mirror.
I used the LOA flurex lamp and a difusser from the local hardware store. Then the fresnel from an old OHP was used to project the image. With this setup the throw was about 54" at a 70"(diagonal)screen, which made the unit rather large. By folding the optics I got a projector that was 6 feet tall and
30" deep by 54" wide. Not all that big but once you get the fever you to will go BIGGER.
Anything else ? Just let me know.

9" CRT lens
Somebody (sorry, I forgot who and it was pages back) said something about using a 9" CRT lens with an 8" LCD panel, but all they got was a round image on the wall, with bits cut off the side.
I think this might be (but kick me if I'm wrong) because the 9" CRT inside the projector the lenses came from, didn't have a 9" image. I'm only guessing here, but I have a CRT projector and the screens are a lot bigger than the actual image size, which is only 5 inch diagonal.
Yes the CRT projector is broken and I think I may invest in getting it fixed, at least that way I will have a definite decent system. Except that it weighs a ton and is the size of a house. In fact, I will post an image of it later, see what you all think. It's from a nightclub and the cigarette smoke deposits on the inside are quite spectacular.
Cheers,

I saw the 175W Regent MV 7,000 lumen dusk to dawn lamp light thing. I'm nearly 100% certain that it was the one you got. The bulb is, what, ED37 size? Its basically the largest elliptical bulb size they make, right. I took a replacement bulb for it out of a package, and held it in my hand. I suppose it would work just as good as any other, the size just kinda freaks me out 🙂 I'd like to find a fixture that uses an equal-wattage ED28 or smaller bulbs. Also, HPS is out, the color temp is crazy warm. its either Metal halide or Merc Vapor.
As for this spotlight I found, I emailed them about a retailer. I couldnt find jack on their site, and their retailer finder information form is broken.
Let me know if your bent sheetmetal as a reflector thing works. sounds like a pretyt good low cost option.

just called this lighting company in Grand Rapids, MI that carries full line of lithonia, and asked them if they took single orders -- no dice, they were like 'WE only sell to authorized distributors in quantity, sorry!" gay. its so dumb how everyone gets their darn cut 🙂
Also, fender, question, does that MV bulb produce LOADS of heat, to the point that you're going to melt a fresnel like has happened to some people? I'm real worried about heat.

projector diagram & calculation
hi all,
I made a diagram & calculation program, using fresnel panel and 1 lens.
It might help or make more confusion, I don't know.
Just try and have fun.

Progress
2 things...
Regarding the use of the OHP lens...I do plan on using this for a while but it just wont work for the long run. As others have mentioned the picture would be just WAY to big unless I have the projector in the middle of the room. My other problem is that I am also building a large fixed-size screen, but I will be moving soon and my girlfriend is constantly moving our living room around. This is why I want an adjustable lens. I am currently looking at a 100-150 mm (adjustable) lens but I am thinking I might want more of a 100-200mm lens. I really want to be able to control the image size to fit my screen exactly...regardless of where my projector ends up in the room.
Second...
I got home and started taking my VG150 apart last night. I was taking pictures as I was going. My girlfriend thinks I'm pretty crazy. Well...I ran out of batteries about 1/3 of the way and eventually drained all my remote batteries as well. I really didnt want to stop so I kept going and got the LCD screen almost completely removed.
I finally got to a point that I need a VERY small screwdriver to get my last circuit board off. So....I'm heading to Tarket at lunch to by an eye-glass screwdriver kit and a BUNCH of batteries. Since I'm feeling helpful I will put the monitor back together up to the point that I stopped taking pictures. I am hoping this will be helpful to others in the future.
I have to say that now that I have the monitor apart it is a lot more involved than I originally anticipated but I'm not too woried yet as everything is looking good.
I will get back to you guys in a day or two with my latest progress and hopefully a bunch of pictures....
Later,
Dave

I was raking around in the attic the other day, when I came across.....the original copy of the bible. Which was nice.
And I also found something which appears to have come from around the same era, this projector (see attached photo). The lenses have been removed but you can see where they would go in. The reason it is a kind of manky orangy-brown colour is because I got it from a friend who is a DJ in a club - the smokey atmosphere really got to this thing. You can also see from the dust it's been sitting in the garage for a while.
Anyway, it is arcing when I turn it on, which is a bit like a machine gun. I haven't tried to get a picture from it as I'm really not too interested in it. Maybe I should try and fix it, it might soldier on for a while.

Thats a slight understatement 🙂 🙂

Awesome work in excel. I played around with the fresnals a bit, using your diagram for ideas, and i think you may have given me the answer. I tested in day time, cant wait until night fall to test it out. Thanks!!
As far as fresnals go, are the ones in ohp's glass? Heat being an issue, i think i need to find a melt proof glass fresnal.

anyone got any pictures of there projector in progress yet? 🙂
still waiting on my lens(es) from surplus shed (shipping to the UK) 🙁

Progress Pics (if you can call it that)
Here is the link to the pics of my first trials. (don't laugh) I have a box built to house the light source, and as soon as i get the optics working a little better, i'll build a permanent house for the lens.

LCD Panel
Hi All!
I've been folowing the string for some time now and I finally registered.
Last night I found a link for a panel with composit in.

I know it is kinda' long but if you have a business it looks like they might give you a free sample.( i had a friend of mine with a business order one for me today.) match that up with a zoom lens from a 35 mil camera and I think that would do it.
bye for now

A in the shower thought
On the dukane 4003, there's a small "flip-up" lens that spoons with the main lens. This makes the throw even shorter...
Turned around, it should have the opposite effect. So maybe you can compensate and lengthen the throw by adding another lens into the "circuit"?
oftheend said:My problem with OHP lenses is this: they are short throw, compared to what i need. I remember from high school that when an OHP was used, an image about 5 foot diagonal was produced from about 6 foot from the screen. This would, in my setup, put the pojector in the middle of the room: rather distracting. My throw length is almost 20 ft. (the 15 i said earlier was a bad estimate). I am looking for an 8ft screen from that distance. An OHP lens would prob produce like a 15 ft screen, way too big for my wall.

Heat issue
Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the WATTAGE of the bulb indicate the amount of HEAT it produces? We know the light output is in lumens. So the stupid question of the day is this: How hot does a 100 watt bulb get? Answer: 100 watts
Enjoy.

Re: projector diagram & calculation
Gunawan,
If you could just add a focal length spec for the fresnel lens and make the distance to the light source a variable, this diagram would be prefect!
You obviously know how to use excel. I wish I could offer you a job based on what I saw!

Re: Heat issue
If anyone wants to order some lighis or ballasts E-Mail me at Highvoltage92@hotmail.com Electrical work is what I do for a living and I get great deals at the supply house.
Watts is the amount of power a bulb pulls 120 Volt 100 Watt lamp is .83 Amps. Amps X Volts = Watts Watts / Volts = Amps. Higher the wattage can make for a hotter bulb but that is not a way to mesure the heat only power consumption.Timtimes said:Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the WATTAGE of the bulb indicate the amount of HEAT it produces?
