DIY Sony VFET lottery discussion

A huge thanks to Papa Nelson, Jim, Mark and Jason! This is really as generous an offer as they come! This community is great!

May I venture a bold suggestion as to repay a bit this generosity? Everyone that enters already commits to donating, I don’t know, $10 (kind of buying a lottery ticket). If you win, great, if not, you are still giving back and donating to worthy charities.

It’s giving a little bit back. At least, I plan to do this with my “ticket”.

Also, kudos to the idea of having this be a lottery with a few days notice, instead of a first come first served scenario that is even more dependent on location and luck than this version. I really applaud the thought that has gone behind this!

This is fun, even if some of us (most of us?) won’t win. This is just this community’s incredible sense of sharing and fairness!

Thanks again,
Rafa.

This is a wonderful project. My sincere thanks to Mr Pass and the Team at DIYA for making this possible!

Looking forward to seeing a lot of beautiful silver amps pop up all over the world now. I like and appreciate the choice to go with an external SMPS - the Edcor will not have issues with hum pickup from a nearby internally mounted linear power transformer this way and it will make the project much more accessible to folks not wanting to deal with mains power.

Wow - this was definitely worth the wait! Thank you to all who are involved with this sweet looking amp! If I am not fortunate enough to get one of the those awesome kits, I sure hope I can score one of those awesome "left over" chassis! Time to blow the dust off of those vFets I picked up a few years ago...

That's the same thing I'm doing, good luck.

Thank you everyone for your amazingly positive feedback. I have fielded a lot of emails on the helpdesk about the project, including many very personal stories.

I have been contacted by a number of members living in Asia and Australia for whom the timing of the lottery is in the middle of the night. We have always tried to support the global DIY community equally. As such, there will be a second 15 minute lottery entry window 12 hours after the first (8AM UTC April 8th).

See what time this is around the world.

lottery tickets are fun because you get to dream about winning ... It is just nice having something to look forward to.
Even if I don't win a spot, I get to be excited about something; for a few days, it feels like there is a concert coming up or a big movie I want to see just around the corner. And if I miss this one I get to think about it for another two months for the next shot 🙂

I think so too 🙂 It's nice to have some suspense, right? I travel to total solar eclipses around the world, when I can. There's only an 85% chance you will travel to the other side of the world and it will be a clear sky on that day. It's always an adventure, and the suspense of not knowing what is going to happen is part of the fun. Somewhat masochistic? Sure. But isn't every sport? Building an amp? Sometimes you succeed, sometimes you don't. If you don't want a challenge, there are plenty of shops selling amplifiers, and that's fine too.

Any chance of getting a replacement deluxe 4u faceplate with the vfet logo?

The VFET chassis is a different, custom width. Smaller, no room for a PSU inside.

Are the kits on lottery complete down to the single screws and nuts?

Yes. Every winner will have no excuse not to complete the build!

Is there a minimum membership term requirement?

You must have been a member prior to April 1st. No new registrations.

Not a bad idea Rafa, but I think that might it a real lottery with associated legal baggage. Maybe next time.

I will donate to the suicide prevention and also the prostate cancer foundation regardless of the outcome of the lottery

Thank you.

Many, many thanks for this! Will there be an option to pay a bit more to support these worthy charities? Really hoping to get one and help give back.

This is a good idea. However, there might be some issues with our payment processor, and international customs might want to include any additional payments in the price so it may be best to handle this in a separate transaction. I may make an optional direct donation link should any winners want to contribute extra. Will think on this, thanks for the suggestion.

Hi Jason,

Thank you for sincere consideration.
However, how can we prevent one member from joining both first and 2nd 15 mins lottery (e.g. one from Asia waking up 4am and joining first and one from west/EU joining 2nd). Just raising this up to make sure everyone gets fair chance.

Many thanks to NP and to all involved, good luck to all.

The only purpose specifically would be audio and there is such a small demand most would not spend the money to do so. From what I understand the small run Nelson had made years ago cost him 1/2 million dollars

however not a big risk for him he could sell them double the price tomorrow in the third Lotery 😀
