DIY Sony VFET lottery discussion

@Jason, is the forum's backend infra prepared for Wednesday?

Don't want the load balancers shutting down thinking we're under a DDOS attack Lol

The entry mechanism was chosen because it seemed the fairest way to address the 3 problems described earlier. The server overloading (and how popular the response has been) wasn't a particular consideration at the time.

Right now we're on a single (but very beefy) bare metal server with good specs. It can handle many thousands of people online reading at once no problem.

However if everyone turns up and posts at exactly 8PM there is almost guaranteed to be some dropped connections. So... please don't. If you would like to be conscientious please wait 5-10 minutes before making your post.

When we have migrated to XenForo in ~4 months from now we'll (finally) have a scalable stack, with load balancers and multiple web servers. Right now, no, and this event will be unknown territory! Hold on to your hats...

When I sent the mailout a few days ago the server didn't miss a beat. But this kind of load will be different, more writes.

So, I would ask everyone to please go to diyaudio.com/vfet rather than hunting around the forum which it comes time.

The diyaudio.com/vfet page has been updated with news of the two entry windows, as well as some Javascript that will redirect you to the right place at a random moment in the first 5 minutes. There is both a countdown timer for the start of the event plus a timer showing when you will be redirected, so you can relax. That will help to spread the load and bonus points go to anyone who doesn't post at exactly 8PM UTC.

Ok, so what are the contingency plans if something goes wrong?

The server is deliberately configured to only allow a certain number of simultaneous database connections. This is a normal healthy self protection mechanism to stop the server getting overloaded. If you get an error message about too many database connections, just wait, things will eventually go back to normal.

If you can't get in because of that problem, we've got you covered. There will be a link shown to you on that error page, to place your entry off-server as a backup plan.

The server will of course be being monitored very carefully. In the event there are any problems at all, the 15 minute window will be extended until there have been a full 15 minutes of regular operation without any errors.

In summary:

1. Load diyaudio.com/vfet before the event and let it redirect you
2. Expect there to be some glitches. Maybe a lot, maybe none. If there are, relax knowing the closing time will be extended until there has been a full 15 minutes of no-glitches.
3. If you see a database error, don't stress, you'll be provided with a link to enter off-site on the error page you see

Hi Jason, good luck with it all for the big event, also good to hear that members who miss out on the first part lottery draw will be automatically entered for the next draw - so we do not have to post again for that future event.

Based on the number of views of Nelson's pdf article in the first post of this thread (nearly 10,000) - this could indicate quite a response.

Based on how this thread has blown up I'm starting to feel sorry for your server handling all the traffic. Thank you Jason for all your hard work. Their should be a criteria that allows for more lottery tickets based on all the orders placed at diy audio lol. Than i know i would have a better shot as I have lost track how much I have purchased and collected over the years. Anybody else care not to think about the amounts they have spent over the years? That's not including all the other bits needed. Don't let anybody tell you diy saves you $$$

EADFan, you could also look at this the other ay around: people that already have amassed a large quantities of audio equipment could get actually penalized in the lottery to allow newcomers a chance! 😉

Those that already have 3 or 4 Firstwatt clones could leave a chance to those only holding a single ACA, for example!

But I’m confident this will be a slaughter of entries and am very grateful for Jason to take all this effort to ensure the fairest possible allocation!

I like the added points for those not posting exactly at the hour! You can make it so that the very last poster is ensured an AMP! Then you have everyone waiting for the very last second and actually end up with a lot fewer entries! Hahaha. (It only works if it is your only entry, of course, not if you post a million times and get the last one... there could also be points deducted for more than one post!... this could be fun finding all the ways to deduct points! LOL)

RafaPolit. You make a excellent point. I see this amp as a excellent amp along the lines of the amp camp and would be great for somebody new or wanting to building their first amp. Even though this might not be a recommended first build. When you have as good build guides as 6l6 it's hard to go wrong. I think the rarity of the Sony parts and the pent up years of wanting will greatly decrease my odds of winning. But you can't win if you don't play!

You mention all them different first watt amps many folks have built. Let's see I have collections of parts for a aleph j f6, built a bom saved in mouser for a f4 (have the boarss), a couple psh 3 boards, a couple of amp cam mono 1.6, Wayne's whammy headphone amp/preamp, Wayne's linestage preamp/headphone amp, acp plus along with that new solder here at the store and other thing I have forgot lol. So yeah. Lost count. That doesn't include the bigger purchases like the chassis 4u or 5u for the amps. So best not to add up the $$$ have had fun following many of them good guides and seeing the threads on each project grow and grow over the years!

I must admit message about lottery, new VFET DIY kit got me absolutely excited, sky is not limit for dopamine levels I'm reaching for two days now in a row, this must be best 1st April prank ever 😀 (while looking at the schematics I'm not that proficient to get the joke)

Anyways even more impressive is that Nelson Pass is opensourcing his ideas for so long. Thanks to Nelson and this awesome community on diyaudio.com- you let me fell into lovely trap of class-A DIY addiction 🙂
