Are the 1.8" LCD's better than, say, a 5" LCD and why.I dont know whether to use the small ones or the bigger ones.
jeroth,
In a nutshell, look at the spec's regarding resolution, contrast ratio and then total cost of your intended project and then decide the 'space' issue. The small panel will run you anywhere from free to ~700$US. From grandpa's little tv to VR glasses, as your resource.
Ask yourself:
What do I intend to do with the panel? What do I intend to project? How much do I want to spend to get that? How technical-minded am I? How much time do I have? Who am I? How did I get here? Where am I going? Ha-ha, skip the last few.
Read the last few days of the thread here (skip my saturday night posts, ha-ha), at least. I think if you read the entire thread over an hour you will come out very knowledgeable (and maybe a little blushing, ha-ha).
Don't be shy about asking though! Answering question's helps to inflate my ego and increase my message post status. Very important things, here at DIY, ha-ha!🙄

Look's indestructible!
Maybe, they used that on a space shuttle mission, ha-ha.
It will work fine, but a little on the pricey side and it must weigh over 20 lbs.! However, it says it is for large slides. Maybe 2 1/4 or larger! That open's up more lcd-size possibilities for you!
Are there any re-sale shops in your town? I can usually find one here in the 'States for about $50US. Looks like you'll get that for about $100US, after the shipping.
I'm not sure how remote you are but, I would think you could find some good deals even in a town of 100,000 size.
Sometimes, school's and library's have a busted one sitting around, they will give you, for free! Tell 'em it's for an experiment or eduuuaacational-display, smile real nice and act a little timid, like Mouse in The Matrix. Worth a try, anyhow.😉

I saw this and thought if its not real expensive you could rob its small lcd panel.

Jeroth
great advances have been made in lighting technology since that projector was built. even if it was the sh** back then, it may be only substandard today. plus, who knows if the lamp works, and if it does, how much life is left? what are the changes of replacing it?
too many uncertainties for the cost IMO.
Whoa boy! $1049 and up! Educational price too
Kodak has some cheap analog camera's going around that have a lcd panel on the back. Saw em for around 50$ somewhere. Probably not too bad. Maybe difficult to input a signal too. But, for 150$ I'd go with the Unipac.

yeah, problem with digital cameras is how the hell do you get the signal to the screen? most cant accept a signal. might try taking mine apart just to see, but i really doubt you could input a signal into the screen very easily.
personally, im fed up with projection panels, small lcd panels, and all other things related. gonna try just getting a $250 controller board, and a ~8" diagonal LCD notebook or surplus screen for $50. the controller is what is expensive... ill just get one of those, and get a cheap lcd module to work with it. if that works, ill get a GOOD lcd with high contrast and fast response. spending the extra money for SXGA and a great panel is well worth it to me.

well think thats what is in a real projector -$400 bulb -$500 optical system -$300 R&D cost so mabey $200-$500 sounds like a deal to me.
Ask the seller what kind of lamp it takes
100mm slide is almost 4" 's. That opens up any hi-res 3.5" panel's you can find. Maybe some vga's of that out there, but all I'm pulling up in my resources is 600x234, tops! Probably $2-250 US. I'd go with the FMD 20 VR glasses for that much. Two of em in there and they come with rca, dvd connector's and accept PAL.
I think you can find a cheaper, typical slide projector somewhere and go this route with the glasses or the Unipac panel's. I know I would if I wasn't in economy-mode now. But, if your looking for the tried and true approach. With lot's of people to help back you up, endless tech support, so to speak, try an OHP with the Nview panel.
I enjoy the portability aspect and tinkering with tiny gadgetry. That projector is large and cumbersome and maybe you won't be able to find a good panel to utilize it's larger slide size. Try finding a free one or near free, first. That maximize's your choice of going the small-panel way. Economizing where you can, readily.
Are you there Jeroth? It's cloudy in here! Are you there...
Don't talk to me cowan! Your a bad boy! he-he-he! I'm trying to enjoy myself on my last night in the USoA. What'd you do with the $5 clams I sent ya?! I hope ya get a chicken-bone in your throat! he-he!
What do you want to project Jeroth?

Hey guys,
Been pretty busy at work so I haven't posted in a while. I received my LCD's, the 1.8" one is the high resolution one according to the part number. I also ordered a 3.5" (600x234) LCD. I also got a couple of driver boards, but I suspect that they're only for the 3.5" display. If I don't have a driver board for the 1.8" display I might be SOL. Anyway, I have no idea how to put the things together, so if I get a hold of a digital camera I'll post some pictures up and beg for help.
For those who haven't read through the previous messages, I got my displays from Data International for $105 and $130, plus shipping. I think Sushimasterx tried to get a 1.8" display as well, but they said they were out of the high res one. Jeroth, if you do get the projector, the 3.5" display for $130 is probably not a bad deal.
Marklar, for a moment I thought you stumbled on something big, but those displays aren't quite what we need. We need transmissive, not reflective type displays. However, there may be other people working on a reflective type setup, I have no idea how the optics would work for that. If someone has built this kind of setup, those displays would definitely be worth it even if they were up to $1000. In that case, you could probably build a professional quality projection system for $1500 (as opposed to the projectors that sell for $4000 and up).

just recently have i been thinking about just how close we could come to building a high quality, near commercial unit. after seeing my results, i thought we could come close. but then you look at the commercial projector specs, and are humbled.
the contrast ratios on those puppies are like 1000:1. we just cant get ahold of that technology for cheap, yet. we can come close though... i think simplicity and efficiency is they key here.

Could some1 please tell the best products that I could buy, If I am willing to spend AUD$900 on a DIY LCD Projector project.
I would also like to say that I am looking to build a projector that offers a picture quality that is AT LEAST equal to a standard TV.
So basically, what are the BEST lenses, LCD's, Lights etc that I could get, to build a projector for AUD$900(This is approx. US$450), and what sort of quality would the picture be for this equipment?
I dont mind going the Small Pannell way(1.8") or the larger pannels such as 4". All I want is the best quality projector, for the amount of money I have.
Any advice is GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks,
Jeroth

Sharkwong,
Great! If that 18d11 sticker's on there, then that's what it's gotta be. Cool. They probably sent you both the driver boards. One for each.
That will be sweet to finally have some pics posted here of that.
Jeroth,
If ya had a free slide projector or really cheap one, I would get the FMD 150,250 VR glasses, Cannon Eyetrek's.
Otherwise, buy the FMD 20,200 and get yourself a nice slide projector. Not important to get a nice one, really though.
Check out my post a couple days back. I made a table of prices, info, etc.,.. It's a white pictured, table. Check it out.
Only change is the 18d11 is 105$ according to Sharkwong. Hopefully, (pretty sure) they gave em that one.
Make sure to get a stable cooling system on those!
But, remember! If you aren't so concerned with the space issue and don't really care about making a small projector, then go the OHP way.
I prefer the small one because I have a SP and am waiting to splurge on one of the best 3 in that table I talked about. I like to be able to tote it around. I used to use em when VJ'ing. I like the portability.
And, I'm looking to make something James Bondish. A covert, large screen projector, ha-ha-ha! For when ya wanna secretly project a large screen picture, ha-ha-ha!
Best O wishes!😎

Jeroth,
please read the threads first... don't you think you would see a whole lot more completed projectors if we all knew exactly what to do? did you click on "i searched the forums for an answer" when you posted? well, you had to have... but you didnt read the forums. please do. there isnt a simple answer on this one yet ok?
SushiMasterX, not to bust your balls here, but got a question... those sony glasstrons, or the iglasses, or any of the VR sets... why not just buy em and use them for what they are made for? hell, the glasstrons are cool, its just like watching a huge TV! so, why not just buy em, and use them as is? why spend the money to take em apart and possibly break them?
